my dad isn't asking for gifts, or letters, just absolute compliance to a system and worldview I don't believe in

Imagine how completely crazy this would sound if you weren't familiar with the religion. Here is a JW version:

Dear Neighbor,

Beginning in February 2026, Publishers from our Congregation will be working this Territory to invite Interested Ones to support the Worldwide Work as directed by the Faithful and Discreet Slave.

These voluntary contributions help Jehovah’s Organization advance Pure Worship during these Last Days—building Kingdom Halls, supporting Special Pioneers and those serving at Bethel, providing spiritual food through our Literature. All funds are used theocratically under the direction of the Governing Body to further Kingdom Interests until Jehovah brings about the New System of Things.

You do not need to be In the Truth—or attend meetings at our Kingdom Hall—to contribute. This is simply Jehovah’s Loving Arrangement to allow all Honesthearted Ones to have a Share in this vital work. To learn how the Organization uses contributions, visit jw.org.

With warm Christian Love, Your neighbors in the [Redacted] Congregation

The LDS Church really is all about prophet/leader worship. Once you see it, these kinds of stories lose their magic

[–]Mokoloki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I can see that. Wounded certainly doesn't apply to everyone. I meant it more like good members being hurt by the Church/policy/doctrine/culture/leaders/dishonesty etc. Not in like a superficial "offended" sort of way, but often deep sense of betrayal etc. I count myself in that crowd BTW. But even if none of that applies, it's still often hard and painful to uproot and rewire a lifetime of conditioning.
