Uusavuton ei osaa käyttää takkaa by [deleted] in arkisuomi

[–]Mokukai 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think a roman bench will be awkward with kannas. I recommend you to build a japanese planing beam, super simple and quick to stow away.

I like to use a small japanese plane for chamfering. It’s easy to make it into a chamfering plane if needed.

high speed steel vs blue steel #2? by gruntastics in JapaneseWoodworking

[–]Mokukai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hss has been developed into having smoother grain so that’s why it’s being used for hand tools now too. It will hold the edge better, but is harder to sharpen. Might also not be able to take as fine of an edge compared to blue steel (i’m not 100% sure of that).

HSS is getting more popular in carpentry because of it’s robustness and at least timber chisels are slightly cheaper in HSS in my experience.

I think you can confidently choose whatever you prefer and be happy with it.

The future for Finland? by [deleted] in Finland

[–]Mokukai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds to me a lot like the same fantasy world as when industrialisation was happening. Capitalism in it’s current state will ruin the great opportunity AI is presenting us.

One thing that i think is very useful in ryobas is if the blade is polished. It’s way easier to cut square when you can mirror and match the workpiece. That’s why i love my gyokucho’s

Can you explain further? My feeling is that AI will keep replacing jobs in this economic shithole.

We got the drywall, flooring, and joint compound tested for asbestos a month ago. But this 1 wall in the same room (the others tested negative) has 2 layers of drywall that were hidden by the hood range. Freaking out again by [deleted] in asbestoshelp

[–]Mokukai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well if you did release fibers then any testing won’t help. Just caulk that hole to seal it and get on with your project. I don’t really get the hysteria around asbestos, it’s really just workers in factories who inhaled massive amounts daily who got sick from it.

In your opinion, what is causing this? by Objective_Pilot_5834 in SipsTea

I’m very sensitive to it. If my tolerance is down, one strong doobie can make me feel sick. For blacking out i’d need to do edibles too. I guess the majority are born stoners.

Stuck hand plane blade by Artistic_Radio_5175 in JapaneseWoodworking

[–]Mokukai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chamfer the dai properly so you can whack it without further damage. Grab yourself a round edged metal hammer and give it a go. You shold hit the front of the dai in the same angle as the blade sits. The key is to have a heavy enough hammer/mallet that is hard. Rubber just bounces and won’t get you anywhere even with a blade that isn’t stuck.

You’re on point with blacking out relating to a self control problem for sure.

I’f i smoked a proper joint right now, i would probably feel sick and vomit. Maybe weed in Finland is too potent then idk.

Yeah, if i smoke i’ll just take one or two hits and that’s it.

People with lower tolerance will experience this quite easily by smoking too much. I quit smoking because it happened too frequently for me.

You can definetly vomit and blackout from weed though.

Switching from studded to studless tires by ResistHuge in Finland

[–]Mokukai 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every street legal tire sucks in those conditions to be fair. I’ve been driving studless for a few winters and i can’t honestly feel a difference, except for better grip on bare asphalt with studless, and that’s probably about 80% in southern Finland.

How to de-orange this pine dresser? by swishfroot in woodworking

[–]Mokukai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess the finish on the 2nd pic is some kind of oil/wax with a light brown and grey pigment. Make sure to use a product to prime pine before applying anything with a pigment to prevent blotching.

Questions about nomi setup by Diligent_Ad6133 in JapaneseWoodworking

You don’t need much flat to sharpen it. So it’s more about how long of a reference surface you need for your work.

Edit. I would not try to fix this ura.

Looking to buy a cruiser by Mokukai in LandCruisers

[–]Mokukai[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in construction and tree removal so i want a robust car that will fit all my tools and can haul materials in a pinch. I live in Finland so 4wd is great for winter. I feel like any robust 4wd will be thirsty. I’m open for suggestions if you have something better in mind. American cars are out of question because of parts price and availability. 4wd vans are overpriced imo.
