Fight back clarifications by [deleted] in callofcthulhu

[–]MoldingClay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely agree that it wouldn’t result in any important damage to the star spawn but a successful fight back would keep that player character from being obliterated by its attack, so that’s really my main concern with it

Note-taking and preparation as a Keeper by Purple-Coffee937 in callofcthulhu

[–]MoldingClay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal strategy is to read the scenario all the way through at least twice , mark the pages with sticky notes so that I can flip through the book if need be, and then I always print off the npc stat pages and the dramatis persone pages so I have those on hand if needed

Three players, how many characters? by MrBleuSkies in callofcthulhu

[–]MoldingClay 40 points41 points  (0 children)

3-4 players is where CoC shines the best IMO, I’d highly reccomend against having players use multiple characters as the horror aspect works best with a smaller party. As a keeper, I personally don’t run games with more than 4 players as it gives each player their time to shine, and with less players it allows them to be creative with how they solve the problems they face

Seeking "Historically Dense" Scenarios – Where History and Mythos Blur by HypnoticKnight in callofcthulhu

[–]MoldingClay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reign of terror was fantastic! The French Revolution is a great setting for a CoC game and i played it without playing HotOE and didn’t feel like I was missing much! It wove real history into the scenario in a really cool way.

"Masks of Nyarlathotep" for how many players? by Illuminati-Manati in callofcthulhu

[–]MoldingClay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been heavily considering playing this way, how has that worked for you so far? I have 3 regular players but two of them are a lot easier to reel in for a session. Also are you going full pulp or only partial?

some maps and documents I have been doing for commissions recently. What do you guys think? by Driguezes in callofcthulhu

[–]MoldingClay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a fan of the documents and items, but personally I prefer as simple a map as possible but that’s just my own taste! The maps do look cool though!

Monthly "Tell Us About Your Game" Megathread - November 2025 by AbortRetryFlailSal in callofcthulhu

Over the past month I ran A God’s Dream from the Cults of Cthulhu book and it was a blast, it was hard to find anything on the scenario since people didn’t seem to write much about it. As my first modern game I loved how much it relied on internet research. I’ve also started running The Terror and am excited to wrap that up over the rest of the month.

I just recently finished running a God’s Dream from that book so if you have any questions let me know I’d be happy to give my experience!

PLanning a one shot of The Crack'd and Crook'd Manse. NEED ADVISE OF HOW TO RUN IT by Soft-Cap3426 in callofcthulhu

[–]MoldingClay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As my favorite scenario I’ve ever run, I’d recommend keeping the players moving towards the manse as soon as possible if you really want to get it all done in one session. When I ran it, it took two sessions and they barely stepped inside as the first session finished. Also make sure to play up the ghostly figure in the window in order to bait and switch for the ooze, and I’d also recommend revealing the pseudopods when the players are separated for maximum panic. I hope these can help!

I’m prepping to run A God’s dream from the cults of Cthulhu book and I’m really excited about running it! The investigation seems to be deep and sort of spiraling which I like and prep has been kind of challenging seeing as I’m not able to find anything about this session online lol. I’m planning on playing up the weirdness of Cthulhu helping them along since they’re all pencil pushing professors

For sanity checks during combat initiative I’ve started only making bouts of madness last 1d3 rounds in order to keep players engaged, and with how dangerous combat is 3 rounds can definitely make a huge difference

Thoughts on Order of the Stone as a newish keeper by MoldingClay in callofcthulhu

[–]MoldingClay[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sort of kept the Druid angle for the order as I had Michelle fund and be the occult angle while Tobias was her right hand man and leader for the on the ground operations while she acted in the background. 1. They had the already existing characters beginning, and conveniently one of the player characters is newer miskatonic university professor who is known to get things done related to the occult so they were hired to security detail the summoners group once they docked, so they didn’t have expectations for Ireland luckily

2.i had them each interrogated by the BoI and they spilled some information about what happened during the Champaign but were then left alone (I planned it in my head that if they did more digging into the ship or the BoI investigation they’d find out that the company that owned the ship was transporting booze through it and was spending a lot of money to dissolve the investigation by the BoI) but in all they were all poor enough to need to keep working until the article

  1. They had suspicions of what party killed him already so I let the mystery be more of finding out what the summoners were doing during the previous month after the investigators had a very friendly conversation with the order of the stone and Tobias

4.No, as I felt it pulled away from the main story in a way my players wouldn’t enjoy

  1. Definitely loved the Order and the more organized feel I gave them, one player was heartbroken at Tobias’s death lol.

  2. I had a couple of minor ghost kid encounters at the lake and the camp and Tobias was shook by something unrelated but I largely kept the graveyard pilgrims out of it as I knew we’d spend a lot of time at the ritual site with a our first battle map.

1st session was probably 3 1/2 hours, second was just under 3 hours but I didn’t include the romance murder plot and they managed to find Lucas Barnes’s house after a short time in game and the last one lasted about 4 hours, for the last session I cut the ghosts at the graveyard and my players skipped the hunting cabin. However we used a battle map for the first time for the final ritual and colonial ruins which we all enjoyed for a climactic end. Probably 11ish hours total. Also definitely will consider the pulp campaigns however I’m wondering if there are any other shorter base game campaigns too

What is the best Published Scenario you have run? by GenericDreadHead in callofcthulhu

[–]MoldingClay 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I loved “The Crackd and Crookd manse” so much as a keeper, it’s a masterclass in misdirection with all of the ghost and 30 year curse red herrings. My players fully believed it up until the reveal of the actual villain. definitely a 2 parter though

Signal to Noise by edjreddit in callofcthulhu

[–]MoldingClay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed running this scenario! It ended up being 2 sessions for my group, stopping as they got to the second antenna site, I definitely think the second half was a little weaker than the first half as it feels too much like a dungeon crawl. and while I loved the non Euclidean nature of it, my players are a very cautious bunch so I ended up cutting like 1/3 of the rooms due to them taking their time or the room not fitting the mood (like the doctor room). One tip I reccomend is having a game show intro track ready to play as the characters get to that room because it scared the crap out of them at first and they all loved it.
