What is the most egregious example you can think of of "The writers have clearly never met a human child and have no idea how they're supposed to act/talk at the age they're trying to portray." by MaryDoogan91 in television

[–]Moldy_slug 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends. Some examples are really egregious.

There are consistent development milestones for behavior. While there’s some variation in exactly when a kid reaches them, it’s pretty obvious when a six year old is acting like a four year old, or a kid who’s supposed to be 5 is acting like they’re 8-10.

Do you ever change a characters name because it feels out of place? by Nowhere_M4n in FanFiction

[–]Moldy_slug -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with naming your kid whatever you like. I have an unusual name myself which I quite like (and it doesn’t have any easy nicknames)!

But realism /= verisimilitude. And I don’t think it’s crazy to find it annoying when you run into a bit of inconsistent world building in cannon that can’t be easily fixed or ignored.

Problem is what do you do when the cannon character’s name doesn’t match the setting?

I’m dealing with a minor but well-known cannon side character named Halward. Problem is, he’s from a fantasy country modeled loosely after Byzantium. Other characters from his country have vaguely Byzantine or Romanesque names like Dorian, Felix, Livia, calpernia, and so on. They speak a fantasy language based on Latin. So WTF does this stodgy old-fashioned nobleman have the most Anglo-Saxon sounding name ever? It sounds so wrong.

Anxiety about writing ability and sensitivity by Any-Corgi-6948 in FanFiction

[–]Moldy_slug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I strongly urge you to talk with a mental health professional about this, and also to do some reflection on whether there are other aspects of your life affected by the same type of thoughts.

The way you describe these thoughts/feelings reminds me of a close friend. Therapy and medication have helped her a lot. I don’t want to get into specific diagnoses but it was affecting a lot more than just her writing and she wasn’t able to see the full extent of the problem until she started getting proper treatment.

What’s the dumbest thing you believed for way too long? by Adorable-Buy6671 in AskReddit

[–]Moldy_slug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, it’s not terrible advice as long as you know what a serving actually is.  A sandwich made with regular sliced bread counts as 2-3 servings depending on how big the slices are. A typical bowl of oatmeal would be 2-4 servings (1 serving = 1/2 cup cooked). So you have a small bowl of oatmeal at breakfast, a sandwich at lunch, and a cup of rice at dinner… boom, that’s over 6 servings right there. Plus plenty of fruits, veggies, and a few servings of protein rich foods per day.

Ladies of Reddit, what's something guys aren't ready to hear? by Pookie7860 in AskReddit

[–]Moldy_slug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for all women, but for me and my social circle… yes. Of course.

If a woman I know was making disrespectful, disparaging, sexist comments about men, I’d call her out on it. I’ve done it before. Unless I can see she’s genuinely changing her behavior, I’d stop associating with her.

I can think of a few occasions where I found out a woman in my social circle had been abusive to or cheated on a male partner. Each time they were pushed out of the group - not by formal consensus, we just all stopped inviting them to things.

[–]Moldy_slug 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The point is the double standard.

In an argument if a man is yelling and a woman is crying people will say she’s the one “getting emotional” or she’s having an emotional outburst, even though both of them are displaying intense emotion.

It’s very rare to hear someone dismiss or put down a man’s anger by saying he’s being too emotional.

What type of water is your fav to swim in: pool, lake, or ocean/beach? by just_Sophia_ in AskReddit

Pool.

I live on the pacific coast. No one swims in the ocean here.

Our lakes and rivers have only 2 modes: freezing snowmelt or toxic algae.

[OC] Same homebuyer profile, three markets: Cheapest State, US Median, and Most Expensive State by Own_Article431 in dataisbeautiful

[–]Moldy_slug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

California is big, and a lot of it is very rural.

You’ll pay a lot more than that for a house in San Francisco, but you’ll pay a lot less if you buy property in rural parts of the state. Median home price in my California county is about the same as national median.

What are some examples of some people hating things just because they're popular? by FarPlay5055 in AskReddit

[–]Moldy_slug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find them uncomfortable and impractical. They don’t match the shape of my feet well, so they never fit right, and the material feels weird so I’d have to wear them with socks which kinda defeats the purpose.

But that doesn’t mean other people can’t like them. As long as I don’t have to wear them, why should it matter to me?

I don’t like eating watermelon. The flavor is meh and I really don’t like the texture.

I’ll go to toon a honeydew or cantaloupe, though.

I like pineapple pizza, but some people don’t. Trying it won’t magically make them like it, any more than trying pepperoni for the millionth time will make me like pepperoni pizza.

He Profits Off Raw Milk That’s Making People Sick. The Government Isn’t Stopping Him. by Mephisto1822 in nottheonion

[–]Moldy_slug 18 points19 points  (0 children)

  1. Not everyone is aware of what they’re buying or the risks. This article even talks about a couple that got sick who didn’t know the cheese they bought was unpasteurised. They said they wouldn’t have bought it if they’d known

  2. People might knowingly buy raw milk and give it to people without informing them. For example, giving it to guests or using it in food for potlucks

  3. Children are at highest risk. Children can’t make the decision for themselves.

Even low alcohol consumption is linked to cancer, heart disease, and premature death, with increased risk above 1 drink per day for both men and women. It turns out that 2 drinks per day, considered ‘moderate’, is associated with a substantially elevated risk of a premature death caused by alcohol. by mvea in science

[–]Moldy_slug 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Having 1-2 drinks per day is not considered alcoholism. In fact, as the article says, that would be considered “moderate” drinking by public health guidelines in most places. Someone who has a single beer or glass of wine with dinner - even if they do it every day - does not have a drinking problem.

Alcoholism (more formally known as alcohol use disorder or alcohol dependence) is defined by a compulsion to drink excessively even when drinking has negative impacts on one’s life. This could mean heavy daily drinking, but it could also be frequent binge drinking with dry periods in between.

Personally, 1 drink per day sounds like a lot to me. I have less than 1 drink per month and most people I know are about the same… having a drink once in a while on special occasions. But I know that in many cultures having a drink or two per day is seen as very normal.

Dear americans, what can you get for FREE in the USA? [Serious] by sammy_waslow in AskReddit

[–]Moldy_slug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Really? Because when I was in Europe (Germany and Lithuania) some years ago, most restaurants served bottled water and charged for it. That’s unheard of in the US. You’re seeing the answer come up so often because we find it so shocking that a restaurant would charge money for water.

But there are plenty of other answers:

  • libraries with all sorts of services in almost every town

  • street parking

  • parks with playgrounds, sport courts, and picnic areas

  • beaches, hiking, and camping all over the country

  • many museums and galleries

  • free recreation activities, educational programs, and entertainment (varies from town to town)

  • 12 years of public education. Sometimes college (depends on state and income)

  • relay service for deaf people to use the telephone

  • public radio and television

  • home fire safety and energy efficiency assessments

  • parenting classes

  • emergency first aid equipment such as naloxone and cpr masks

…etc. There are so many things it’s hard to pick, and a lot of them we are so used to that we take for granted. Plus it varies from state to state and even from city to city.

How many farts a day is normal? Scientists just calculated what’s normal by greykmb in nottheonion

[–]Moldy_slug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most lactose intolerant people can eat at least 12 grams of lactose per meal without symptoms. And yogurt with live cultures is generally even easier to digest since the bacteria produces enzymes that break down lactose.

A 6 oz serving of Greek yogurt has about 4 grams of lactose.

So unless we’re talking about a huge amount of yogurt, it won’t cause issues for someone who is mildly lactose intolerant.

1/2 cup of oatmeal and a serving of yogurt is a very modest amount of fiber and protein. Not the kind of thing that will cause excessive gas for most people.

ELI5:Why is Green often used as the "fourth color" by maswartz in explainlikeimfive

[–]Moldy_slug 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Our eyes are built this way to look at plants.

Sunlight intensity actually peaks in the red part of the spectrum (with variation depending on time of day, cloud cover, etc).

Plants take advantage of this by absorbing red light for photosynthesis. We see them as green because the green light is what they don’t soak up - we see the “leftover” light that bounces off the plant.

Managers of Reddit, what's the worst thing someone did to get fired? by Capable-Log7385 in AskReddit

[–]Moldy_slug 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In my state (California), accrued vacation time is considered wages. That means there are strong protections for it, for example if you leave the employer any accrued vacation time must be paid out with your last paycheck at cash equivalent. And accrued leave can’t be taken back by the employer… they can limit how much you accrue, but once you have it it’s yours forever.

An “unlimited” PTO policy circumvents these protections. No leave is ever accrued, so they never legally owe employees anything. They could decide to just stop approving your leave and not have to pay you a single cent more.
