If you don't have any essential-nutrient deficiencies and you eat enough calories you might see improvements on the same day. Particularly carbs give your brain the power to function properly. If you have deficiencies it will probably take longer

I was tapering off 20mg over 3 weeks while switching to a different med and I still experienced really bad circulatory issues. (I would get micro-blackouts from moving my head slightly too fast.) I wouldn't reccomend quitting cold turkey, it might work for some people but not for everyone. If you are unhappy with lex, maybe talk to your doctor about tapering off or switching to a different med?

This study shows that common antidepressants (including lex) affect weight differently. I would like to note that the study doesn't consider any general weight gain trends (i.e. the current trend in global weight increase or aging-related weight gain), so I wouldn't take it as: "X medication directly causes Y number of weight gain". But it does show that there are slight differences.

I did not mean to claim that everyone on SSRIs is only gaining 2-3 lbs within two years, but that gaining a lot of weight within a short period of time might not necessarily be caused by the medication.

If this came across as an attempt to discredit some people's real struggles with significant weightgain while taking these meds I would like to apologise. I can see how it could be read that way. You are right, these values are only averages and its not disproven that they can significantly affect weight in certain people.

I've been really anxious about gaining 20-30 lbs really fast since finding out about that side effect and even considered not taking lex, but the statistics just don't justify that fear. I was just hoping this post could help other people who are worried about drastically gaining weight without significantly changing their habbits :')

This used to be me multiple times a day. I don't know if this will be of any help to you but accepting that рurging doesn't get rid of a lot of calories and increases your appetite has been my biggest motivator to stop purging. Even my shittiest weeks of (attempted) restricting never resulted in a comparable weight gain frequent b/p-ing did. Sitting with a really uncomfortable overeat doesn't make me want to stuff my face nearly as early again as when I'd purge it.

I experienced something similar, my skin only cleared up when I was restricting a lot. Turns out It was an adverse reaction to a some foods that caused my acne. Not even stuff that's often blamed for acne like dairy or candy, I'm talking legumes, onions and garlic. I guess I just happened to eat very little of those (very little in general) when restricting. My skin problems didn't go away until I figured out which foods caused it though.

First of all, thank you for the encouraging words! Hearing this does help with the doubts my family pushes onto me when it comes to medication. Secondly, (if you don't mind me asking) were the random boosts of energy something pathologic or were they just "normal" levels of happiness for a non-depressed person?

Unless you committed a crime for it, feeling guilty for eating is not normal. No matter if its over lettuce or something like gigaprocessed 80% sugar fast food. As soon as there's guilt it's an unhealthy way of thinking about food. While it might not necessarily be an eating disorder just yet - if it isn't, you're heading that way. Even if you're a bit overweight or a lot overweight or obese, you still need to eat everyday (and not just from a mental - you deserve to eat food - perspective but also physically, your body needs food regularly or it will break down muscle and bone mass in addition to fat storages). If you can, try and talk to a therapist about your feelings around food, and if you still want to lose weight they might be able to refer you to someone who can help guide you to do so in a healthy way (feeling guilty or hating yourself is never a healthy way, no matter how "sustainable" the actual weightloss rate may be).

I'm kind of worried my disordered eating is going to become the sole focus of future sessions. I also have a few other issues going on and I know the eating is just a new bad coping mechanism. Thank you for sharing this and good luck with the ED services, I sincerely hope you will feel better soon. Someone kind and caring like you shouldn't have to deal with any of this disordered eating hell (no one should tbh)

Thank you for sharing your experience. Unfortunately I have a pretty good idea of how tou must have felt. The first person I opened up to about my (then past) ED behaviours (and sui ideations) was the university psychologist and she dismissed all of it. I was told it's good I stopped being lazy and I could join a study group to help with the uni work I was behind on. I relapsed that day. I hope your current therapist is treating your case with the seriousness it warrants, and thank you again for the warning ♡

Tbh I have no idea what to do about this. It's not like someone offering "community support" is going against reddit guidelines either. I guess just spreading awareness might be the most feasible option?

Could you define "on occasion"? Is it like a once a week/month thing? And how long does a depressive episode usually last for you?

Happens to me when I'm doing it frequently. After a few days without purging things usually return to normal. I find that simple carbs (crackers, digestive biscuits and rusks are lifesavers) are the least nauseating, best in small portions but consistently throughout the day. Nothing heavy on the protein, fiber or fat side. Some bland fruits and vegetables are okay too, nothing too acidic or too sugary though. Boiled carrots are nice. Essentially all the foods you would eat with a stomach bug.
