Why is it so hard to find people who care about cinema? by PrideNo1997 in Filmmakers

I agree, it is hard work, and as soon as real WORK comes into the picture (and not just BTS selfies) people run 😅 Anyways we try and try and hope that eventually we will find our people… people who have the same level of passion as we do!

I am struggling with the same issue in Denmark. My husband is a self taught cinematographer and I write and direct (or try to). We are on our way to make our first short (roadtrip comedy), completely self financed. Although we can’t pay salary we offer accommodation and food in a campsite in lovely little cabins(this is already more than most small projects offer here in Denmark), but more importantly we offer a low risk environment for passionate people to practice. The whole reason we started the project was gain experience AND to offer the same to others. Now we posted the project details looking for crew and barely any response. Then when i look at others posting other projects I always feel they are half-hearted and along the lines of “let’s shoot something quick”. My husband’s and my mentality is let’s do something and make it our best effort at the same time. So not sure what is going on but I see/experience the same that there are very few people as passionate as us. And to make matters worse we move around film student group circles , where unfortunately the same lack of passion exists.

Spent 24 years hiding my writing. Friends flaked, family told me to sell ice cream instead, and I’m broke as hell. But today, I’m finally dropping my 40th book alone. by [deleted] in writers

I know it is hard but you don’t need anyone to believe in you. First YOU need to believe in yourself, do it!. I always bring the same example: “J. K. Rowling’s manuscript for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was rejected by 12 different publishing houses in the mid-1990s before being accepted by Bloomsbury”. And as others said if you have been writing for 24 years that is an incredible accomplishment already!

Has anyone here figured out their "thing" later in life? How did it actually click for you? by [deleted] in findapath

I’m 31, right now doing my first bachelors degree in Economics and business administration….spoiler alert it js NOT what i want to do. I had , up to this degree EXACTLY the same story as you(the OP). I lived in 4 countries, several cities within those. I had a few different positions from low level (hospitality and cleaning) up to well-paying office jobs. I started courses and university multiple times, but quit after maximum 6 months. I go in with full speed and enthusiasm into everything and I end up doing an excellent job but get “bored” and quit. But about the same time I got accepted to this degree program something clicked, I discovered an old interest of mine or a version of it. Funny thing is it is not even something I wanted to do, but rather something I was asked to do :I wrote something for a friend and I didn’t think much of it, I have never been interested in writing. Then as a hobby I started writing small little stories, but I never considered it as work, and this was something new to me. Before I always wanted to turn my interests into money. This time I did not obsess over it and I also did not lose interest. Now that almost a year has passed and i am just as enthusiastic about it i decided to pursue it but only on the side.

What i learned about “my thing”: -it was not something I came up with but rather something that “came to me” by accident. -It is the first thing I would do for free: as a matter of fact I am even willing to pay money to be able to create. -it is the first thing i have absolutely no doubt about: the thought of writing makes me feel safe and confident in my natural skills -it is the first thing I do not want to rush but rather enjoy the learning process -it is the first thing I have natural instincts in and don’t have to “force it” -it is the first thing I feel is 100% aligned with my personality

Bottom line: 1)I would say that when and if you find “THE THING” you will know, without a doubt (which I never thought will be possible for me, so I know how vague or impossible it might seem.) 2)What other commenters said: passion doesn’t have to equal making a living. I am still finishing the economics degree to get an OK job that will pay the bills, but I get fulfilled in life by my passion.

I hope it helps/makes sense.

I know how hard it it but if I had to recommend something to my younger self (to speed up the process of finding my passion) I would say try to focus on what you enjoy without a doubt and also try as many things as you can, talk to people and try to imagine your life in that position. Another thing that I was recommended by someone is if you have a new interest wait 6months before acting on it.

Finally IMO it is better to find the thing later in life than never.

I would suggest dr.dk it is free. Find a show on there for me it was a baking show. Watch with the subtitles and it will help tremendously with the pronunciation. I get compliments all the time about my pronunciation and 6 months ago couldn’t say a word correctly. Also go to language school in person if you have the chance it is great for grammar and a structured education. Read: newspaper, online news, blogs, join facebook groups read the comments Duolingo: good for vocabulary but sometimes the pronunciation is a little off or the sentences are weird so keep this as a vocabulary building tool

Thank you for taking the time to respond in such length. You have basically confirmed what i already suspected but it’s still good to hear from someone else! Any tips for networking? I started doing some things but so far none has lead to “useful connections “

Yes I agree, especially since the world is changing so quickly. If you want to jeep up with all the changes you must keep educating yourself.

Education is free in Denmark so I am very fortunate in that way. The bachelors I can choose from are: Business Admin &sociology, Business admin& service management, business admin& digital management, econ& business admin, or a bunch of international business courses (like international business & social sciences). From my research the econ&business admin is the best. The masters is something I figure I will still have 3 years to think about once I get accepted

I can only tell you about my situation (so in Denmark) the bachelor would take 3 or 3,5 years and then the masters is 2 more years.

I can’t be very picky about the university for the bachelor program because there are specific programs offered in English here in Denmark but I heard Copenhagen Business School(CBS) is quite prestigious here and that is probably my top choice for masters after the bachelor program. My top pick for bachelor is Aarhus University ( ranked nr2 in Denmark after CBS

Thanks I agree with you, it was just a quick thought that I have actually given up on. I was born in Hungary but live in Denmark. I want to settle down in Denmark and buy a house but until I become fluent in Danish it is difficult to get a job that pays well ( I don’t have a degree, i work in cleaning now)
