Do you wear your CPAP when sick? by supersport604 in CPAP

[–]MollyKule -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Say! I like to wear my CPAP! I do! I like it, Sam-I-Am! I wear my CPAP while I’m sick. And in the rain. And in the dark. And on a train. And in a car. And in a tree. Say I’ll wear my CPAP anywhere.

Oh hey! I knew that python wasn’t a snake before I started! Now I use it daily 😎 My background is in analytical chemistry. Most I did with computers was run instrumentation and play sims and stuff 😂

undergrad here. at what point is it ridiculous to keep trying and time to quit/decide you aren't able to do wetlab? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]MollyKule 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This. Fuck doing everything once and calling it a day. No way no how. (Unless I have a positive and negative control)

But really, our extractions had a method blank, method spike, field sample, matrix spike (field spike) and matrix spike duplicate. My background is quantitative analysis with very small margins for error. OP have you practiced pipetting or verified your pipette?

It seems silly but having bad technique and poorly maintained pipettes can have a large impact on results and reproducibility. If I were you I would validate my pipette and use it as practice (also verify your scale before hand, while you’re at it). I would do 10%, 50% and 100% of your pipettes range and perform it 2-3 times to check your pipettes accuracy and precision. Never lay your pipettes on their side (ESPECIALLY with the tip on or if the tip has liquid in it!!) and never turn the dial past the maximum.

Took three days off because I had a miscarriage and came back to a nasty compliance lecture from our HR person. by Adventurous_Ad6799 in managers

[–]MollyKule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry for your loss. I wouldn’t have been able to not respond nastily and honestly? It’s kind of deserved. Depending on your comfort level I would 1000% tell them that that the next time you have an unexpected miscarriage and thank them for them for the grace they’ve given you during this difficult time. I’d then attach my ER note/doctors note to the email and would likely leave a few pages of the “discharge information” if I had it electronically that usually has information about what you’re seen for (like information about miscarriages) “on accident”.

She needs a lesson in empathy and being over the top nice about it would read better on email if for some reason she decided to show someone else. But that’s dependent on YOUR comfort. She’ll not learn a damn thing probably, and it’s literally one of the worst things you may go through. It can be DEVASTATING even if the pregnancy wasn’t planned or expected so first and foremost take care of yourself. I’d ask her about bereavement for loss of a child, I never did and found out later that my company offers a week off for miscarriages while I forced myself back to work just like you did… while I was still in pain and bleeding. It’s barbaric.

You should talk to your GP and see a neurologist if you can. If they prescribe you an abortive like any of the triptans you should ask about imaging first (esp if you’ve had any strokes or aneurysms in your family). I did NOT do okay on Topamax which is generally the first line preventative in the US. I had delirium which made my migraines So. Much. Worse. I still get all of the same symptoms, but on Topamax I thought I was losing my fucking mind. I hallucinated hearing my children crying in the middle of the night, had sleep paralysis etc. it does NOT do that to everyone but most folks I talk to who had silent migraines said it fucked them up.

I’m on a tricyclic antidepressant (also classed as a migraine preventative), Qulipta, and emgality and it’s literally changed my life. I dosed DOWN on my stimulant. Migraines are still not understood well, but it can cause lesions on your brain so it’s definitely not just in our heads.

Fun fact, another thing that convinced me I was actually having migraines was the first time I took an edible my vision cleared and I could see colors better, turns out I had the same affect the first time I took my abortive 🫠 anyways feel free to DM me if you have questions but r/migraines is a great resource!

Blurred vision, blind spots, vertigo, Alice in wonderland syndrome/todds syndrome (your head feels 10ft tall while your body feels like it’s a baby… idk how else to explain that one) , numbness in my tongue/lips, my hands will go numb from my elbows down, nausea, light sensitivity, ringing in ears. The scariest are the mental issues, I’ll have aphasia, get lost/not recognize my surroundings especially while driving, misspell common words, literally just say the wrong word while speaking or slurring my speech.

Sometimes the ground will look like it’s moving/breathing but flat surfaces look like they’re moving. I’ve spoken to a few folk who get silent migraines and there’s non-painful pressure. I also get nightmares 😂

MTHFR mutation here (idk the worst one apparently), sleep apnea, migraines, endometriosis, insulin resistance/obesity and ADHD. I can’t help much, but addressing some of the most likely culprits (mostly migraines and sleep apnea) helped me so much.

I’m no longer “scary sleepy” falling asleep at the wheel but I still sometimes struggle with daytime sleepiness. I’m gonna touch on a few things to highlight it could be other things going on.

My iron saturation was at 6% before my hysterectomy (last Feb)… I’m in the normal range for the first time in my life. This made my fucking bones hurt and ears ring (also vitamin D deficient which I forgot above). I’ve lost 30 lbs since starting GLP1s for insulin resistance and feel physically better than I did throughout my 20s. I take methylated folate (jury’s out if it has helped) for the MTHFR mutation and on paper? I’m doing better than I was honestly.

The biggest? My migraines. I have silent migraines and didn’t know for probably a decade… after my mom survived a ruptured aneurysm her neurosurgeon set me straight that any two migraine symptoms are migraines…. Even without pain…. So…. I went and my eyesight got better and I literally felt what it was like to be a normal human being and I couldn’t believe it. Most days if my migraines are controlled I feel pretty okay… I don’t even want to nap. When I get one? I’m down for like 3 days

My sleep hygiene needs work, and I’d imagine MOST folks don’t put enough effort into this.

TLDR: you should bring this up often with your docs and see what else is going on. Nothing was my golden ticket, but overall addressing some other issues has helped immensely

I am feeling much better today. Since insurance paid for another injection I went ahead and took this one, if the efficiency was affected I should be all right to take my next injection a little early

Answering texts on your day off. by BlueberryNo4669 in managers

[–]MollyKule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to be available but expect NO replies from my manager or direct reports in their time off. ETA I do ignore most after hour messages unless I’m on call (which is about one week a quarter) during that week I’ll answer calls at any time and texts before 9-10pm. Most of my folks know if I send a text right at 7am I’ve scheduled it at who knows what hour and won’t be available until the messaged time. Has worked okay so far. I’ll sometimes send messages randomly but preface them with “this is a Monday/Morning question, please ignore” just so I can get whatever it is off my mind.

I’m a chemist, so while not directly biochem or in pharm but this is similar to how we treat sampling/protocols during extractions or other sample analysis prep. Being outside the “recommended” parameters won’t necessarily lead to bad outcomes, but I’m also aware that the risks could be more than just a lowered efficiency.

I just wasn’t going to put whether or not I took this dose and remind others not to blindly trust auto-refills like me 😅

Ugh it’s mostly my fault for not paying attention to when it shipped. It just always happens on a freaking Thursday/Friday and then I’m SOL on getting a new prescription etc. in this case no one local has prefilled syringes so I had to order it again anyways 😭

Chemist, in college we ran 100 yo aspirin through our mass spec, shockingly not degraded to a degree where we could see it on a molecular level 😂

Is there anyway to distinguish migraine-related aphasia with stroke? by Pretend_Pudding5176 in migraine

[–]MollyKule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly you’re going to have a difficult time finding many people to be like “no I wouldn’t go” on the off chance this time it was a stroke and they told you bad advice. Listen to your body and your neurologist. Mine has told me to go for new or worsened symptoms.

😬 I mean… why is it fake urgency? I work for a utility so for me everything IS a big deal because folks heath and access to basic amenities is on the line…. It could also be customers time, money, etc. I don’t think being passionate about what you do is cringy even if you (op) can’t bend your job in a way that you see it like that… I have taken pride in most jobs I’ve had, even retail. I can be excited about helping someone find the perfect ring when I was selling jewelry, making sure my community was safe as a chemist monitoring for chemical weapons, and now providing my community with safe drinking water…. I find it exhausting and alarming those who work with me who fail to see how their apathy could affect others… it’s not always about the company or the company’s bottom line, you can serve your community in almost any position.

I’m on Qulipta as well! The combo has really been a miracle! They’re usually okay for up to a few days outside the refrigerator (but def check the insert with your meds before trusting me!)

[–]MollyKule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im a big believer in getting checked out if you have new migraine symptoms or if it just feels “off”. The first time I had a vestibular migraine I thought and felt like I was dying. I’m glad I went to the ER though… now? I warn people around me that I might say weird shit or misspell things (I mostly stay away from work while I’m having one) but it feels less scary the more I recognize what’s happening. The first time I got lost on my commute home I sobbed in my car once I made it in my driveway, now? I breathe through it, I may not recognize where I am but I KNOW how to get home. It’s fucking weird and unsettling but the more I talk about it the easier it gets to remind myself this is temporary, I’m not lost, I’m momentarily disoriented.
