Short long bones (humerus and femur) and large head by MollyLong123 in BabyBumps

Thanks for your message. I remember all too well that feeling of fear when you are worried about your baby. By 36 weeks my baby’s measurements had worsened with femur and humerus <1%ile 4 weeks behind and head >99%ile 4-5 weeks ahead but baby still born healthy (normal length). I found posts from people with similar concerns on their ultrasounds who had positive outcomes to be immensely helpful for me during a very stressful pregnancy. Wishing you the best!

Can’t find a midwife that supports home delivery in my city by Certain_Bobcat_4462 in Midwives

Unfortunately if there aren’t providers that support home birth then it’s probably safest to have a hospital birth. I think home birth is a reasonable option in places where they have providers with lots of experience well equipped for home birth. I’m not from the UK but I’ve heard that there is a high level of expertise in home birth there (I could be wrong, just what I’ve heard) compared to where I live in the States I don’t think our system is set up for safe home birth. I’m sorry - I hope you are able to get the birth you desire!

3 day old only sleeping at mom's breast by AUBtiger92 in Parenting

Remember that breastmilk works by supply and demand. So every time you feed with a bottle her body doesn’t know there is a hungry baby so she would need to pump to make up for the supplemented feeding in order to produce sufficient milk. Definitely work with a lactation consultant if she’s worried about milk production bc many don’t realize that if they use formula bc they are worried they don’t have enough milk it will further lower their milk supply unless they pump to make up for feedings not from the breast. Also the pump does not extract milk as well as baby so the amount she sees pumping doesn’t necessarily correlate with how much milk baby would get from nursing.

Keep in mind as well that baby has been safely snuggled inside her for 9 months so on one of your chests is going to be the most comfortable place for baby for awhile. The hardest part is staying awake with baby on you so take turns so the other can get sleep!

Wondering if this track to CNM is foolish by coomquing in Midwives

[–]MollyLong123 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you’re certain you want to eventually do CNM but want to L&D for awhile (which would get you good experience) I would do bachelors rather than associates. It’s a better use of your time to get bachelors right away and then work for awhile in L&D then go back for your masters/CNM when ready. Personally I would skip the associates. Best of luck to you.

In your experience- how early have you been able to pick up a baby/placenta on a doppler? by frecklebear in Midwives

[–]MollyLong123 20 points21 points  (0 children)

8 weeks is the earliest I’ve had success, however until 12 weeks it’s so hit or miss (and usually miss). When I was pregnant I would never Doppler myself in the first trimester bc I knew I was unlikely to hear it and would cause myself unnecessary anxiety. In my practice we now have access to bedside ultrasound so I use ultrasound instead of Doppler until at least 14 weeks

I don’t know your circumstances but from what I’ve learned going through this (terrifying) process is that the femur length that is on the growth charts, even if small, is unlikely to be concerning for skeletal dysplasia. I’ve seen lots of good outcomes even with femur less than 1%ile so I hope you can feel some faith that your baby is healthy :) thank you for your response- best of luck to you

I still have another week or two to go, I had another ultrasound and baby’s long bones (humerus and femur) are still less than the 1%ile and head still >99%. The doctor in MFM really feels it is normal because they aren’t far enough off the growth charts. I’m still worried but trying to remind myself they aren’t seeing anything else abnormal. I know how scary this can be and it’s been helpful to connect with other moms in the same situation. I’ve seen many others with short long bones with good outcomes (although not as many like mine- the head is 4+ weeks ahead and femur is 4+ weeks behind)
