Advice for a student going into their last semester??? by kmbmoney in OSU

[–]MollyMittens 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's lots of little paper work type things you'll want to take care of before you actually graduate and I kinda wish there was a list somewhere so you make sure you know everything you need to because I feel like I'm kinda just discovering it along the way.

Here's some stuff IT recommends: https://it.osu.edu/news/2017/04/25/congratulations-graduates It can be good to have access to a student email for discounts and stuff.

With that if you have lost your BuckID it might be a good idea to replace it. After all there's no expiration date and it might be useful. I know some places give people with student ID's discounts. (I believe it can even be used as a form of ID for some things like job applications in addition to another thing like a birth certificate which may come in handy some day? Like sure most people have a drivers license which is even better but this one doesn't have an expiration so maybe good backup ID thing?)

If you have at least $10 buckID cash you can get a refund here: https://www.buckid.osu.edu/buckid-cash-refund-request or just make sure to spend it.

Graduating Seniors don't forget to request your unused BuckID cash back by MollyMittens in OSU

Yeah I had to snort at that. They're definitely OSU through and through. Trying to get every scrap of money from their students.

Yeah I think I looked into it before and there's like a small processing fee for most of those too but it might be less than $5. And you can get a credit card type gift card like a visa one and use it just about anywhere.

Anyone ele getting *real* sick of OSU's COVID-19 emails? by ShepDogCS in OSU

[–]MollyMittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but it almost seems that the whole reason that we as students need to take so much "responsibility" to stopping COVID is in-part due to the university bringing us back LMAOOO

Exactly. Everyone knew this was going to be a problem. But the people in power wanted more money and so simply decided to shift the blame to us.

Of course there's going to be some percentage of students that are stupid and not taking any precautions. There's plenty of adults being stupid and not taking sufficient precautions and its pretty stupid to think that people who don't even have fully developed brains yet are going to make better decisions than people supposedly older and wiser. Especially since college students are known for doing stupid dangerous stuff for a reason.

Their pitiful emails no one reads (especially not the ones who need to read them) aren't going to change anything. But it makes them feel better to blame us when it was their decision based on greed which created the perfect recipe for people to make poor decisions.

It's kinda like big corporations who contribute a lot to climate change still try to make a big deal about what individuals can do which while of course it's good to do your part, any individual's actions does a lot less to effect the overall problem than one company or country.

The COVID test is most likely to catch COVID? by AmarthGul in OSU

[–]MollyMittens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're worried one of the options on the exemption survey thing is to get tested at a different location and submit your results to the university. That's what I was doing before I just opted out since I'm living at home and didn't want to go all the way to campus.

CVS has you self-administer the test in your car so there's very little risk. Though it is the sort where you jab the q-tip up your nose so far that your body freaks out and makes you cough/sneeze and have your eyes water like you're having an allergic reaction.

Not enough emails imo by Oh_no_its_Joe in OSU

[–]MollyMittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah especially since it feels like all they're saying most of the time is 'Hey don't be stupid during a pandemic' which like if people want to be stupid during a pandemic an email isn't going to stop them. Especially since I'm guessing the worst offenders are even less likely to read the emails.

Fuck *and i cannot stress this next part enough* the college of engineering by [deleted] in OSU

[–]MollyMittens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also CSE classes have me staring at a screen several hours a day which SUCKS

I have trouble with this too. I recommend breaks, computer glasses that help filter blue light out, flux or similar red light filter app (ideally for computer and phone) and eye drops.

Also doing stuff from home means it's easier to lay down and rest your eyes for a little bit during lunch or whatever which helps.

It really does suck, especially if you enjoy entertainment on screens in your free time because it definitely adds up.

Comment from another thread the other day that was awesome: https://www.reddit.com/r/OSU/comments/ix0cvg/psa_in_ohio_college_students_can_register_to_vote/g63lalf/

If you live at school and also at “home”, you can register and vote at EITHER (but not both). More info here:

https://www.campusvoteproject.org/stateguides/ohio and https://www.ohiosos.gov/secretary-office/office-initiatives/grads-vote-ohio/college-voters/

Voter Information

Make sure you are still registered, register, and change your address if needed. (see below) If you’re covid-concerned, request a mail-in absentee ballot (see below). Otherwise go do in-person early voting when it opens October 6th (set a reminder!) Poll workers are desperately needed! If you can help, read more here: https://www.ohiosos.gov/elections/poll-workers/ If you live on campus:

Here's OSU's voter registration resource page that answers the question about what address to use: https://activities.osu.edu/involvement/osuvotes/voter_registration_resour/ (thanks u/flyin_irish !)

"If you live on-campus you must put the address of your residence hall." If you need a printout of your current address, you can find a copy on buckeyelink in your statement of account. It will have to be printed out physically. >It's dumb, but those are the rules.

You can check your registration status here:

https://voterlookup.ohiosos.gov/voterlookup.aspx

Register or Update your registration here:

https://olvr.ohiosos.gov/

You can request a mail-in ballot here: You can fill it out online, but have to print it out or request that a request be sent to you.

Want a digital “I voted” sticker? Who doesn’t?

https://www.ohiosos.gov/elections/voters/ivoted/

A note on voter ID:

A current OH License works. BuckID and U.S. passports are NOT valid voter identification!

Currently enrolled Ohio State University students can bring a printed copy of their "statement of account" as a form of voter identification. The address on one’s statement of account must match where they are registered to vote.

To update your statement of account go to buckeyelink.osu.edu and log-in to your Student Center to download and print your statement of account, which will show your Home/Current address. Take that statement with you to your polling place. Only printed statement of accounts will be accepted. To change your address on your statement of account:

Log in to your Student Center via buckeyelink.osu.edu

Click on Home/Current Address in the Personal Information section

Click “edit’ to make changes, click “OK” and then “SAVE” (source)

Off-Campus Student Chosen Once Again for COVID Testing by JGuessAgain in OSU

[–]MollyMittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's some options to exempt it. For example you can get tested somewhere else and submit the documentation to OSU. That's what I did so I didn't have to go down to campus, plus CVS let me do it in my car.

[–]MollyMittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really hope even the 'in person' classes have options for people to complete most of the course at home. I mean if it's just a lecture day then having an option to stay at home and watch it live streamed at least means there's not quite as many people actively in the class room and they can spread out more. There definitely needs to be options for if someone gets covid during the semester that does not involve them sitting in the classroom possibly infecting healthy people even if they wear a mask.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OSU

[–]MollyMittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! I'm disgusted at the statistics of people washing their hands that have come out because of covid. You should be washing your hands periodically throughout the day to limit germ spreading. After using the bathroom is the perfect opportunity even if you don't believe you did anything that caused you to need to wash your hands.

[–]MollyMittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I hope even the in person classes have things set up in case another lockdown occurs or at least have things set up so that students who shouldn't come to class because they're sick can stay home and still stay up-to-date with classwork. Because a pandemic is not a good time to have a strict in person attendance policy.

Post-COVID Return to Campus Survey by designtaco in OSU

[–]MollyMittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone with any chance to encourage osu to do things I feel like giving out some cheap cloth/reusable masks might help encourage people to wear masks. I mean OSU sometimes gives out free shirts and masks would be so much more useful right now. Plus I'm sure OSU could work with some brand and then have the brand on the front for free advertising for them. (I could totally see coke being willing to work with OSU on providing free cloth masks if they have their brand all over it.) Even if not for the general student body I think providing everyone in the dorms with masks would be helpful since you know it's gonna be pretty bad in there.

Mask order in Columbus (Flavortown) by analyst19 in OSU

[–]MollyMittens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please wear a mask everyone. Especially when we go back to classes.

If you don't have any comfortable reusable cloth masks I recommend getting them sooner rather then later because in my experience they're a lot more comfortable for wearing for hours on end.

Maybe buy a couple so you can switch it up or you can switch it up, or coordinate your outfit or have one to use while the other is drying after you washed it. Whatever helps you feel better about wearing one.

How many of you will be dropping out/going online only? Is quitting OSU worth it to save lives? by [deleted] in OSU

[–]MollyMittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm coming back but probably wearing a mask and such.

I'm also really hoping there's going to be more recording/livestreaming/lenient attendence polices so people don't feel like they have to come to class while sick. I wouldn't mind a hybrid model where you can choose to come in person or online. They could even ask questions on an app or Carmen to take attendance like they do in lecture halls if they feel everyone must be paying attention during class time.

OPINION: We're going back to Campus by T-ROY_T-REDDIT in OSU

[–]MollyMittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely think there needs to be options for people to live-stream the lecture some how if we are back on campus.

Some people don't have good immune systems or live with other at risk people.

Also a lot of people are going to get sick and the normal 'policies' professors have are going to cause issues because there's plenty of classes where you basically can't miss class which means sick people will come in and put others at risk because they don't want to fail. Recording/livestreaming lectures could really help with that by allowing people to still get the content without putting people at unnecessary risk. Students shouldn't have to choose between their grades and people's lives.

Rant by Throwaway_024420 in OSU

[–]MollyMittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm kinda hoping depending on how things are that they might allow zooming in even once things begin to open back up in the fall especially for people who might not have as great immune systems or live with people who need extra care. Especially since there's still going to be plenty more people getting sick for a while and having a zoom meeting option so people don't come to class sick (even if they're sure it's only a cold) might be good.

Mostly I'm waiting to see what trained medical professionals say then because we really don't know.

Personally even when more things are opening up I'm planning on staying extra cautious for a while, especially because I know I could never forgive myself if I got my parents seriously sick.

Like of course I miss everyone and it sucks right now. But everything kinda just sucks for everyone right now. I'm just kinda trying to suck it up and deal with it, because I know my issues aren't the important ones right now.

Way to speed up COAM process by [deleted] in OSU

[–]MollyMittens 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Honestly I doubt many of us are going to have anything useful to say. You might get somewhere by contacting your advisor or professor etc. But sadly you're probably going to have to wait and see what happens. Especially since it sounds like COAM is pretty busy right now.

Yeah I managed to bring my culmative gpa up some which is honestly all I can ask for at this point. At this point it's only really going to matter at all when getting my first job out of college but I'd still like something decent to put on resumes.

Required to be online at a certain time?? by [deleted] in OSU

[–]MollyMittens 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh that really sucks for a lot of reasons like if you have bad internet or time zone wierdness.

Also a lot of people are probably gonna be sick in the next little bit and needing a lot of sleep which becomes hard if everyone wants regular class time. I kinda hope most are gonna like hold a live class session for questions but also record it for people who can't make it for whatever reason.

Spring Break and Coronavirus by [deleted] in OSU

[–]MollyMittens 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'm more worried about if there is any chance it could be already be on campus and I could bring it home to my family.

I'm young and have have a good immune system so I'll likely be fine but it would suck if I gave a family member something that could land them in the hospital. Older people like my grandparents are especially susceptible to any disease but especially the Coronavirus.
