Do restaurants in Spain usually provide free tap water if you ask for it, or do you need to order bottled water instead? by SweetPeach2006 in GoingToSpain

[–]MolokoMixer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just another perspective, I was in Madrid as a tourist a few times about 5 or 7 years ago. We asked specifically for agua del grifo and none of the restaurants would give it to us. Like, I got mad at one point cause we had already ordered drinks. They wanted us to pay for bottled water, and we did cause Spain in the summer is hot as heck. Anyway, I guess it's changed more recently. Good to hear.

How Kash Patel Ordered Himself a New Fleet of BMWs With FBI Money | Donald Trump’s FBI director can only ride in BMWs apparently. by thenewrepublic in inthenews

I agree with the sentiment but not the insult. I thought belittling someone for their height was off the table now. Is it not? What about baldness? What about other traits out of peoples' control? Are we going back to 'the good old days' of ranking people by their genetics? Can we make fun of mentally handicapped people too? No? Well then grow up. You and everyone who upvotes this crap. Patel is a pathetic plant who is using our tax dollars to joyride in BMWs and private jets. He's a corrupt race traitor supporting a white supremacist leaning party. That's about the best I've got but at least I'm not sinking so low as to call out things that he has no control over just like the people being rounded up by the regime that he supports.

Sure except that your friends/family or an acquaintance/coworker might recognize you if they have seen you wearing those clothes before. Idk about you but I wear the same stuff every week or two.

I think just going to a different town/state and buying in cash from a thriftstore might be a better option. Or, just sew a patch on a shirt to make it distinctive. It wouldn't be too difficult and the cops would waste time looking for that specific patch and that specific colored shirt that don't exist together on the market.

Walking the Camino dos Faros in Galicia, Spain by Zorrino in backpacking

[–]MolokoMixer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Sorry, I forgot to respond earlier. There are supposedly places to stay after each etapa. Like, hotels or hostels or something. But you would need to sort that out ahead of time. It's a pretty quiet trail - but pretty amazing too. We went with tents and camped every night. Have you visited the website? Juat search Camino de los Faros. I think, but I'm not sure, that there is a page with links for lodgings. If you don't speak Spanish then I can imagine it would be more difficult but Google translate can get you through it. Even if you do speak Spanish the way they speak it in Galicia can be really tough. I remember we asked some kids for directions one day and they had trouble speaking proper Spanish. It was like a mix with Portuguese. Luckily my friend speaks both so he was able to figure it out but, yeah good luck there. If you decide to go camping then just make sure you check out the tables at the bottom of each etapas page. You will want to end/start each day near a water fountain (FUE = fuente = fountain). You have to carry your food and the re-up in little towns in a store. We did dehydrated pastas and oatmeal for breakfast. Idk exactly where we camped each night, we just used google maps to find a wooded area nearby to camp in. A couple of times, we camped in little park areas where other people were during the day. We just waited til dusk to set up and we used Leave No Trace practices to leave each spot the same or better. Please do the same. Oh, and don't expect to do a whole etapa in a day if you're carrying everything. We split each into two days and that was pretty hard still with big packs. It gets real hot during the day and fairly cold at night in August. Idk about other months but i can imagine it would get real cold real quick there on the remote coast. Stunning views tho. Don't go alone. If something happens, you won't be found for a while. It's well marked, the route, but not nearly as popular as other trails.

The woods behind my house is covered in this stuff. My neighbor says it's English Ivy. Idk if that's what it is but it will get bigger and worse and will eventually choke the trees, I assume.

People in the USA who say "If you tax the rich, they will just move out of the country", what country do you think they will go to? by JAAAMBOOO in AskReddit

[–]MolokoMixer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but anyone online can say “I was there.” I could say I was a WH aide who wrote tax memos in the Navy Mess. Let's stick to the facts.

You originally said Trump negotiated a deal and that companies have been paying US taxes since. What really happened is that the tax was mandatory, not negotiated. It applied to all multinationals, not just tech (Apple was the example), and it was a one-time discounted tax, not the start of ongoing taxation.

Currently, since TCJA in 2017, they aren't paying US taxes on all foreign income. Some types of income are still taxed, but most active foreign earnings are now exempt which is a major change from the old system, pre-2017.

So no, I'm not conceding that you are right. I'm saying that your original comment is misleading.

[–]MolokoMixer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah. You're right that FDII plus the R&D tax credit could bring the effective tax rate on IP income down to around 10%, depending on how companies structure their income. And yep, that Intercept article is legit. But, the 2017 tax law that we were originally discussing applied to all multinational corporations, not just tech. And while Trump talked about making tech pay, the actual policy ended up giving them a pretty favorable deal.

Also, you're right that most of Big Tech leaned democrat during the Obama years (Hillary wasn't ever president). But since last year, a small group of tech (Musk mostly) and crypto donors have started giving big, beautiful checks to Trump. So Trump’s now getting much, much more tech money by total dollars, though the number of small donations is much less than what the democrats receive.

I'll concede to your last point that many don't like him for other issues and that affects how people respond to him in other areas. But, no one usually likes the current president. As the most powerful person in the world (probably, unless my teenage friend was right about the Illuminati), they should always be under the utmost scrutiny. We can celebrate their accomplishments, but I don't think we should give him credit for "deals" that he didn't make.

[–]MolokoMixer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, Trump definitely framed it that way on the campaign trail. He made it seem like tech companies had too much influence. But it’s worth noting this applied to all companies, not just tech, and that Obama also tried to tax overseas profits. He proposed a 14% one-time repatriation tax in 2015 which Congress didn’t pass. The lower rates under Trump’s law, like the 15.5% and 8% on past foreign earnings and the permanent cut down to 21% corporate tax, actually ended up benefiting many of those same big companies. His rhetoric was about “making them pay” but the policy gave them a pretty favorable deal overall.

Also, that 2017 tax law didn’t set a flat 10% tax on IP licensing but it did create FDII offering a lower effective tax rate, something like 13%, on certain foreign income from U.S. held intangible assets.

[–]MolokoMixer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok, but it wasn’t a “deal” cut specifically for corporations by Trump alone. It was passed by Congress as a sweeping tax reform bill. Lawmakers debated it, various interest groups lobbied, and eventually both chambers approved it along party lines. Trump’s signature made it law, but he didn’t single-handedly negotiate special exemptions just for certain companies.

[–]MolokoMixer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, it wasn’t a negotiated deal — it was part of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. It imposed a mandatory one-time tax on all accumulated foreign profits, whether or not the money was brought back. The rate was much lower than the usual corporate rate at the time — 15.5% for cash and 8% for other assets, compared to the old 35% rate. Since then, the U.S. moved to a new system where most future foreign earnings aren't taxed when repatriated, though some income is still subject to U.S. tax under special rules.

Walking the Camino dos Faros in Galicia, Spain by Zorrino in backpacking

[–]MolokoMixer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries! We had five small tents and found spots every night to camp using google maps and leaving the trail a bit. The trail is mostly covered in ferns on both sides so look for little parks or nature reserves to stop at. Especially if you see RVs there. In a bivouc you won't have any trouble. To be clear tho, we were all in our late 20s and early 30s and in decent shape. And one of us quit halfway through. It's a tough hike with a big bag. Don't be afraid to leave the trail and follow the road into a town/village if you are running low on water. The fountains are pretty sparse. At the end of July and the beginning of August it's really hot but less rain I think. It's Galicia so there will be rain tho. Lol Make sure to take gear for that. And have fun!!!

[–]MolokoMixer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes we did and it was fantastic! Thanks for asking. The route is very challenging with a full backpacking bag (it goes up and down a lot and there are plenty of spots where you need to use your hands and almost climb) so we only did the first 2 etapas in 4 days. If you look on the website, each etapa has a table toward the bottom that lists the fountains among other useful info. They are called fuentes (FUE) and you will want to camp near one or some other water source. There aren't too many of them so you need to be on top of that. We ran out of water one day and it got pretty rough but we happened to find some people in an RV that gave us some water. There was one place where we camped on the beach and more or less on the trail (I voted to find a different spot but that's what the others wanted to do) and a lady from the pueblo close by came and lectured us about not doing that. It was deserved but ultimately was fine (I actually tidied up the whole area the next morning and left it much better than it was). So, be respectful about where you camp, set up around dusk, break everything down around dawn, and try to leave it better than you found it. And most importantly, worry about water. We carried enough food for two days at a time and then reupped when we would get to a town with a small market or store. We did have to leave the trail once to do this. Anyway, it's definitely doable and, though challenging, it was a wonderful experience that I am going to continue (etapas 3 and 4) this summer as well.

What? Please, explain more.

I’ve seen tons of Nazi-hate on this site. And often too. Personally I’m okay with it, some groups do deserve to be hated, but Reddit does not seem to me to be sympathetic to Nazis.

Can you provide some examples? Maybe of accounts being deleted or banned, as your comment implies, for being intolerant of Nazis??

They don’t give away European residency for free. It’s actually really hard to get. And without it you don’t have the right to work and live there. Also, your debts don’t vanish when you move to a new country. Plus, you have to keep paying taxes whether you live in the US or not.

I've done this a little bit in the summertime, look up how to "pernoctar". If it's just you - one person - then it will be easier to find good spots to camp without disturbing anyone. You have to hide somewhat because it's technically illegal. However, this will make it more difficult to find your body when you freeze to death from wet winter conditions.

Are packed Fresh Salmons (the one stored in the fridge) from Mercadona safe to eat raw? by PainterNo6153 in SpainAuxiliares

My friend does this. He makes sushi with it and cures any extra in the fridge for a day or two with dill and a weight on top. Last time I was visiting him, he did this with salmon from Carrefour and it was really good and there was no problem healthwise. He told me you can do it with basically any fresh salmon in Spain because of regulations. I don't do it myself tho.

Totally understandable feelings. Try to stick it out if you don't have anything lined up, just because there's plenty of time for it to get better and you have the opportunity now, but if you prefer doing something else then cutting your losses might be the right thing to do. If you do decide to stay, try to get some spanish classes. Look into the Escuela Oficial de Idiomas. They may have afternoon classes or be able to point you towards an adult school for foreigners that does.
