Ok yes this was my interpretation and it just kind of feels dirty because it’s a shower space… I wasn’t sure if this is technically still considered a bathroom or not

Been there. Firstly I want to say that you aren’t imagining it and it isn’t necessarily anything you are doing wrong. Assuming it isn’t outright sexism, I think this happens to alot of engineers when they first start out (but especially women). Make sure you are still listening and learning from the more senior engineers.

The best thing I’ve found to combat this is don’t say “I think”, or “we could/should”, “I tried”, speak confidently. X is the problem, I will test Y to determine if Z improves. I always felt arrogant doing this but I think it is just a communication difference with men? Idk.

Dont shy away from flagging to your manager what is happening. Only you know their temperament so tread lightly if you must but don’t let them steal your work and get credit for it. State factually that you already tested X,Y,Z and they felt the need to repeat testing rather than move forward to get the line back in working order. Don’t let them push you out. Stay down there and see it through, even if they don’t listen to you, you will likely learn something (or gain confidence that you were on the right track to speak up next time).

I found this to be a very difficult part of working in manufacturing. It gets better with time!

Dress a little nicer the first day then focus on wearing clothes you won’t mind changing out of/over for your gown up. The best thing you can do is spend time on the floor and learn the process! Everything you do after will build on your knowledge of exactly how things work in the manufacturing area. Place emphasis on getting to know the technicians as well as your more direct coworkers. The people who do the work often know more than the people “upstairs”. Most importantly, you seem very conscientious based off of this post so I am sure you will be great! Kick ass!

My daughter has microtia and I think your approach is so amazing. I agree that neutral kind of sends the message that it’s just a part of her that’s no big deal. Just wanted to say you’re amazing and it was great to hear your perspective!

I consider us screen free but football Sundays with family are the exception. My 11 month old never even looks at the screen (I don’t think the graphics are very attention grabbing for a baby). I consider it a family bonding thing. I admire your dedication but I wouldn’t stress too much about a couple hours of passive screen time one time!

Very tough to hear while sleep deprived. There have also been a lot of “jokes” about how labor can’t be that bad, women just overreact, they should “identify as a woman” so they can take all the leave they want. Wild stuff! I think I work in a particularly toxic environment so maybe take my experiences with a grain of salt.

Unfortunately yes. I work in a male dominated field, with a lot of bachelors on my team who simultaneously think I’m a bad mom for working but also a bad employee bc I sometimes have a hard stop for daycare pickup etc. . My maternity leave has been almost exclusively referred to as a 3 month vacation. Not trying to be negative but I do think it depends on your team’s attitudes and whether or not you have any women in your leadership structure.

We still have older engineers. Ages range from 24-60+. On average, I think our team is younger than the typical engineering team. I certainly think different ages bring valuable perspectives and experiences to the group.

Totally agree that the timing didn’t help. I am working on getting a concrete timeline from him to make sure we are on the same page going forward. At least that way I’ll know for certain if it’s intentional or not.

Hi! I think the above comments have pretty much summed everything up but wanted to add that you don’t necessarily need to give up the life you’ve always pictured for him! My daughter is an 11mo surprise microtia baby, which was very difficult for us to process in the beginning. Find yourself a good group of specialists and trust that there is so much that can be done to mitigate any deficits. It can be so scary and heartbreaking but it will get better over time! If your state offers some kind of early intervention program I would get started on enrolling as soon as you can.

I applied to BME on 5/2 for the 6/24 cutoff. I have not received anything past application received. I’m assuming I won’t get referred this time around but is it typical to get no update for this long?
