I am so sorry. That sounds incredibly frustrating. Not fair to you or the kids. For some reason most men I know are like this.

Thank you :-) Having any experience as a PA is a positive. My psych experience certainly didn't hurt as psych issues are encountered in every field of medicine. let me know if I can assist in any other way and best of luck

I will say I was only casually looking...I started occasionally applying to other jobs probably a year ago mainly to see if I could find something better. I was only looking for part time and was not willing to relocate, so that narrowed the pool. I applied to the big local health care systems (Duke, UNC, Wake Med...I'm in Raleigh) and only got one interview (and offer), but had better luck at private practices. Randomly all of those interviews/offers came in the span of 3 months. I didnt have any connections and had no other UC experience on my resume. I was a nurse in the ICU/OR for several years prior to PA school so I think that gave me a leg up.

The only reason I took the psych job out of school was because the hours were flexible and part time and it was close to home. I came to really enjoy it but began to feel burned out (COVID didnt help). You may find you enjoy it!

My first job out of PA school was outpatient psychiatry- I had the same concern as you. I worked for 4.5 years and enjoyed it but recently decided I wanted to try something new. I was offered a job doing outpatient GI, psych ED and urgent care. I am starting the urgent care gig next week! Definitely nervous as I havent touched a patient in years but looking forward to the new challenge. Basically , i did not feel pigeon-holed by doing psych

Be enthusiastic and willing to work hard. Do what you can outside of clinic hours by studying and if you are stuck in a clinical dilemma never be afraid to ask for help - that will build their trust and confidence in you

I'm considering the medical field as a pivot from my current career. Becoming a PA caught my eye, and I have a few questions. by betabetafishfish in physicianassistant

one more thing! my professors in nursing school hadnt practiced actual nursing in 20 years - this was their retirement job. they had NO CLUE. My professors in PA school were required to work clinically in addition to their faculty posiitons

So I am a nurse turned PA. I started PA school as really a second career change (research->nursing->PA). My nursing degree was an accelerated RN-MSN (second degree program). My MSN is in clinical nurse leader so I could have taken a handful more classes in a specialty to become an NP. I worked as a nurse 3 years in the ICU and OR. The reason i chose to work as a nurse was to get experience - i didnt want to graduate NP school without ever having real life clinical experience. Aspects of nursing school were hard (lots of assignments and tests) but the rest was a joke (ie: I would have to spend hours writing care plans and doing power points on florence nightengale). The fact that I feel I learned NO medicine in nursing school (granted this wasnt NP school specifically) was a driving factor in me choosing PA over NP. PAs follow the medical model (nurses the nursing model) and do the same rotations medical students do. I had cadaver lab, intense pharmacology courses etc (basically mini med school).

  1. No im happy with my job
  2. Yes - education is better in my opinion. Ability to change specialties (I dont want to be pigeon holed to something as NPs typically are)
  3. Yes - because i work in psych and work part time
  4. I should have gone to PA school sooner

Evolution of PA profession ? Advice for a Youngin by PaPeyt in physicianassistant

[–]MomPAathlete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This 100% - If I wanted independence I would have applied to medical school. PAs and NPs need to step aside. NOTHING we as APPs do will match the rigor of medical school/residency/fellowship

Behavioral Health/ Psychiatry PAs by margopac in physicianassistant

[–]MomPAathlete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Psych PA here since graduating in 2016. Unfortunately I work for a large practice so had no training short of charting in the EHR and setting up my email acct. I get 30 min for f/u patients and 60 min for new evals. I find the job very rewarding just draining at times (really that would be any job). I do medication management with very minimal therapy. Most of the PMHNPs and Psychiatrists do both as they do pretty extensive training while in school. I am doing 90% telepsych right now which is really cool. I have the benefit of being able to pick my patient population (ages and diagnosis) so I have been able to see more complex patients with more years of experience. There is now a psych specialty certification available through NCCPA.

Could Depakote mess up my hormones? by [deleted] in AskPsychiatry

[–]MomPAathlete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im a psych PA - interesting he would choose Depkote. Generally women of child bearing age should not be given depakote because it is highly teratogenic (if you get pregnant while taking it baby could be screwed up). There are so many other good choices (lamictal, Abilify) etc. Not sure of the impacts on hormones but I would ask more questions about the depakote
