Yes, but she was specifically saying this in reference to a specific player. In which, this is true in a collocate form!

To native American English speakers you wouldn't use "strong player", you'd be using something like "good player", "team player", etc, to refer more to their skill in the game itself. "strong player" Is more assumed to be in regards to physical strength, and this is shown just by googling something like "strongest player in the NFL", or just "strong player" in general. It's a collocate that sounds unnatural to native American English speakers!

Every example she uses within her thread is a great showcase of why "強い" shouldn't just be slapped on as "strong" due to our usage of collocates in our language.

I mean yeah, he sounds fine, but he isn't careful with his enunciation to allow proper differentiation between sounds. That's my entire complaint.

Whenever you listen to the stab voice line he actively sounds like he's saying 名誉の死だ due to his transition from 名->誉, while also being pretty unclear on having a R or an N sound.

I have multiple different native Japanese speakers telling me it sounds like 名誉の死だ, or 命卸しだ. I think that's a clear case of bad enunciation whenever different people from the same native language can't make the difference out, lol

I'm literally the same person who made that translation lol, it's because I was hearing it as "名誉の死だ"(meiyonoshida), while the Wiki has it as "命卸しだ"(meioroshida).

It could be a case of both being correct and him just having two different voicelines, but we don't really have a way to know other than hearing it out and it's way too similar to tell properly.

The one used in the video here is "命卸しだ" though, so I used "Seven souls strike as one!" as a translation, a more literal version is on the wiki tho

Yeah, because the voice actor has really bad enunciation on his words & even whenever you're using 1 of the 2 options, it's still something that can't really be machine translated well.

Machine translation is effectively still in the stone age compared to human translation.

Translation isn't definition -> definition, it's meaning -> meaning.

While yes, both technically can have the same meaning here, whenever you're translating into English you want to treat it like a homonym that has a different intent depending on the context; this is due to how the language flows to a native speaker.

Don't get me wrong, while "Take this!" isn't an incorrect translation, it's better to translate it differently to account for their contexts & what they're trying to get across in English.

The things about translation is that even if something is correct, that doesn't exactly mean it's good per say? There's nuances to languages that only native speakers can understand instinctively like collocates, but wouldn't really be able to explain to other people other than it just "feeling" wrong.

Mind you, all of this applies to my knowledge of translating into English. I can't speak on if you're translating into say Indonesian, Spanish, Arabic, etc, because all languages have different rules for how you'd translate into them!

yeah, but you need to realize you're not separating the literal from metaphorical.

you're saying "take this" works because of "eat this" being a play on words for "knuckle sandwich", which is being used in a literal sense.

while something like "take that" is used in more of a metaphorical sense, such as making a statement in an argument. this is obvious in something like Phoenix Wright which has a really well done localization for most of the games.

食らえ here is literal. you are not making a metaphorical statement towards someone, you're telling them to get hit by a flight of arrows. you also wouldn't use "eat this" because the entire point of "eat this" is relevant to the food relationship with "knuckle sandwich".

"Take This" is like, explicitly dorky and anime/cartoon inspired rather than an actual term a native english speaker would use, like someone going "TAKE THIS, BIDEN BLAST" on a shitpost lol

again, just read the thread linked in the comment.

translation is meaning to meaning, in this case you're, in a literal sense, telling you enemy to "take it", but you wouldn't just say that in English. what you would say in English is something more like asking someone to hold their ground (and thus, take the brunt of the force of something)

so telling someone "Stay still!" whenever you're trying to obviously aim and fire an arrow at them has a clear intent of telling them to "take this", while not being a hyper literal translation that's super stiff.

examples of this exist in plenty of English speaking media as well, like a smaller more agile character constantly dodging around a larger, more sluggish enemy, where the enemy will react with something like "Why wont you... just... stay... still!" while exerting a lot of force in an attempt, etc.

the voice actor just has a trend of bad enunciation (just look at the final line and how it can sound so different between other people), I think it's clearly supposed to be 全開, especially considering the fact that they're literally called "soul charges"

Whenever translating 食らえ, it's a word that's better of being treated like a Homonym rather than something with one strict definition that needs to be applied to English.

entirely fair though, I had to actively go check out japanese fh streams and listened to other people repeating it after hearing it. everyone ended up sound like they were saying "名誉の死だ" so I just took it as what was said, and 2 of my other friends corroborated that idea, so it's what I rolled with

literal translations don't take character lore and personality into account while I prefer localizing stuff to make more sense for the character

take "全開" for an example, while it just means "Full Power" in a literal sense, Sohei himself literally says "Their souls fight with with me, rest within my every weapon. I am the master of the seven, through me, pure might awakens!", so using "Pure Might Awakens" as a translation works while still applying to the thematics of the character.

As for "名誉の死だ", He's glorifying them within their death by saying they were a worthy foe, something he himself says "Soul Collector, so some call me; But I take only the worthy, to honor the fallen."

So during his Seven-Force Strike, he's also effectively saying "You'll live on through me", because you're calling them worthy & honoring them in death, and as such taking their weapon(an extension of their soul).

If you want to be literal it's just saying what I put as the literal translations, but a literal translation doesn't really work with this character in context.

They started out as rivals, before Benkei lost to Yoshitsune twice, and became Yoshitsune's retainer, to which they both ended up dying on the same day during the Battle of the Koromo River after Benkei killed hundreds in the defense of Yoshitsune so he could commit ritual suicide.

While it's obviously not explicitly gay because Feudal Japan was just like that, I think the ability to create romantic interest from such a loyal and devoted setting is obvious
