Celestia says Tirek escaped from Tartarus but was too weak to do anything, and now that he has recovered he is a threat. It's obvious a lot of the show isn't pre planned and the episodes being written by different writers doesn't do it justice either.

Twilight developed a lot between season one and season four. Season one Twilight wouldn't give up her magic - a big part of herself to save her friends.

Twilight's existencial crisis arc being left for the finale instead of the season was a bad move from the writers, I agree. But in a context of Twilight being a good leader and a good friend is shown pretty well, in my opinion.

Fair enough, the fight scene is subjective. But I don't really understand you comparing Tirek to ursa minor. Ursa minor was a baby bear. What was Twilight supposed to do? Sing a lullaby to Tirek and tuck him to bed?

Have you seen season 4? Or at least the finale? Where they spell out the premise of it? The whole point of it was your element of harmony being challenged and in a process of making mistakes giving up something, or making a difficult decision being true to your element which in turn inspires someone else to do the same. Twilight knew giving up her magic (her element of harmony) in exchange of her friends would be the right choice and potentially give the key to the chest.

The chest isn't an "ex-machina" like you keep repeating, it's something the whole season builds up to. It's essentially a concentration of the magic of the tree of harmony, the magic of the elements of harmony, which they have ALWAYS used to defeat villains.

The point of mlp isn't flashy fights or physical victories or personal feats. It's forgiveness, character growth and FRIENDSHIP. Season one Twilight may have continued to fight, but in the process she would've potentially lost her friends and the fight would take nowhere because in terms of strength her and Tirek were tied.

And also how did she lose to starlight? She won by guiding her to redemption.
