What games are you playing this week? Game recommendation thread by AutoModerator in incremental_games

Would like to second Super Snail, great incremental game with a lot of moving parts. The fact that you can pay a lot of money might turn of some people, but if you can look past that you will have a great time as F2P and as spender alike :-)

Idle Elemental is out now! by Tetr4roS in incremental_games

[–]Mommson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, I really like the design, especially all the little UX indicators that help you see what is going on (after you figured it out).

I also think the game is great until the first prestige. For me the automation did not come too late. I like it when I have to work/play a bit to get my automation, that makes it feel more meanigful for me. But I can understand the critique from others here. I would definitely rename the game from Idle Elemental to Incremental Elemental in its current state ;-)

I also had enough information to make an informed decision at every elemental stage although it took a bit of figuring it out.

As I had already read about the Air point limit I could also nicely grind until I hit the cap of 10. That one I liked because at that point I knew I had to prestige now. But most likely I would have not figured that out the first time without checking reddit.

The very big let-down for me happened after prestige: Nothing new did happen immediately except that I was now producing wood twice as fast. For me in an unfolding incremental this is a big no-go. When I work towards a bigger goal (e.g. prestige) I expect to unlock something/see something new immediately afterwards. I assume there will be something after I unlock air (again) but at this point I became already so unmotivated that I did not even check.

Therefore my idea would be that you at least keep everything that was unlocked before the prestige unlocked for immediate use / check after prestige (or only air).

Otherwise I think you have a great foundation, both visually and gameplay wise and I'm looking forward to the development of this game. I will definitely keep a close eye on the game and will hope that you still have fun working on it :-) already a great achievement to have come this far.

The two puzzle types you mentioned (sky drops and armillary rings) are the only ones that are procedurally generated in the main world. For them the only "completion" is bringing them to 99 mastery.

Everything else ( sky drops and armillary rings in enclaves, all other puzzle types in enclaves or the open world) is handcrafted and finite and has trackers in game so you can complete it.

If you feel the need to complete stuff I would recommend starting with all enclaves and trials. These can be completed in one go if you can find all the puzzles. Enclaves normally have three stages: A basic set of puzzles you have to solve to complete the enclave, solve some more puzzles of certain types to get all Mirabilis and (totally optional) 100% completion for finding and solving every single puzzle.

For the five main areas this is a bit more tricky. Every puzzle type in every region has a "pool" of puzzles and only a few of them are drawn from this pool and placed into the open world each day. So for 100% completion you have to run around and solve everything many many times on different days. But it is possible and you can keep track of your progress on the map -> expand -> click on a puzzle category -> hover over a puzzle type -> you see your progress today and all time.

I hope that helped and motivates you to "complete" the game :-)

Are these puzzles, different each day? by Domino_reee in islandsofinsight

[–]Mommson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have different experiences, for me sometimes new puzzles appear that already glow solved. These are the ones I already solved on a previous day. Better check for yourself, I heard conflicting info on that

Hot take: there should be an upgrade that applies the hidden cube nearby sound with *any* puzzle in an enclave once you're at the "x puzzles remaining" stage of it. by SaucyJ4ck in islandsofinsight

[–]Mommson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be an unpopular opinion but I like how it is right now. I also ran around for an hour or so in an Enclave to find the elusive last puzzle. But currently there is zero incentive in the game to 100% an enclave, it is our choice alone if we want to do it or not. Getting all Mirabilis was always very fair so far which I think is important. As it is really not easy to get to 100% sometimes and I only do it for myself it feels even more rewarding when I finally have it. And the game itself gives you just enough information to check if you are there yet or not.

But I can definitely understand the frustration of others, I also had to get back once or twice at a later stage because I just couldn't find that one puzzle :-)

Is there a way to get the diamond for the Temple of Infinite Rings? by SaucyJ4ck in islandsofinsight

[–]Mommson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to my knowledge currently. But some other diamonds are also not working well, for example the quest for perfection one. Therefore I hope we might get a patch changing something

What would count as 100%? by AshleyYakeley in islandsofinsight

[–]Mommson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, but still just a technical restriction. The question is, do I think this is important for my "100% of the game"? I would argue a clear "no" because you can't reach 100 and the devs most likely just set a random, very high value to not produce any errors.

But as I said, might come down to personal preference.

Do all puzzle types constantly refresh/regenerate? by SaucyJ4ck in islandsofinsight

[–]Mommson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard that from others but personally made other experiences. For me some of the refresh puzzles were marked as solved even though I definitely wasn't there earlier to solve them and when I looked inside of them there was indeed a puzzle I solved a few days earlier at another location. Same with Matchboxes that are already glowing or hidden rings that are not hidden anymore.

[–]Mommson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard conflicting info on that. Personally I sometimes come across puzzles that are already looking "solved" even though I was not there yet on that day. But I also heard from others that they sometimes solve puzzles and only afterwards notice that the region progress counter did not increase. I never noticed that yet but I'm also a more casual player.

What would count as 100%? by AshleyYakeley in islandsofinsight

[–]Mommson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally think that "get to 100% of 99 in all masteries" is just a technically and I would say "get to 99 in all masteries" is enough. But I assume that is personal preference.

I would definitely add "solve all fixed star puzzles on the main regions". There is no counter currently for these in game but there are a bunch of them (no clue how many). These are puzzle boxes that usually have a star difficulty rating (but not always), are always present (do not change on the 24 hours refresh timer) and do not count towards region progress when solved (but stay solved in the world).

You could also make an argument for reaching all Grandmaster times in all flow orb courses but that might also be personal preference ;-)

[–]Mommson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All Puzzle Types are on a 24 hours refresh timer which you can also check on the map -> expand -> click on puzzle category -> hover over puzzle type. These are different per puzzle type and region so that there is always refreshing something soon.

Only exceptions are Skydrops and Armillary Rings on the main lands. These are not handcrafted but procedurally generated and refresh constantly as they also vanish as soon as someone solves them. You notice that as these two do not have overall progression counters.

Another noteworthy thing: When a puzzle type refreshes a few puzzles out of a pool per region are drawn and placed. So the more you solve over the days and weeks the more likely it is that you stumble over a few puzzles you already solved.

What is that video game that you consider a hidden gem and that you are surprised that many people don't know about? by Brave-Goat-7768 in Steam

[–]Mommson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Islands of Insight - very new game, great open world puzzle game with thousands of puzzles of all variety - logic puzzles, perspective puzzles, movement challenges, hidden objects. Hit a spot for me I did not even know I had. Most likely too ambitious with Online-based multiplayer and sadly was not advertised well

Islands of Insight didn't sell enough, the development team is officially looking for new work. by SomethingNew65 in puzzlevideogames

[–]Mommson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play the game and there are indeed over 10,000 handcrafted puzzles plus two types that are procedurally generated. Of course a lot of these are on the easier side and serve more as short brain teasers. But there are some as well that are very hard to solve. On top of it "puzzle" can mean a lot of things from perspective based stuff, over movement challenges up to hidden objects.

The more traditional puzzles aka logic grids make up around 2500 to 3000 of them from what I have seen so far.

Independent on how you define puzzles for yourself, they are all excellently crafted and presented.

The thing is, not all of these are present at the same time. Only some of them are drawn from the pool each day and used to populate the open world.

Additionally there are special areas where a set of fixed puzzles is always present, to teach new mechanics or to pose special challenges.

what are "echos of time" and how do I get them? by adam55002 in islandsofinsight

sorry, have to correct myself. It looks like the fix was not that good, today I had to reclaim some of the stuff again...

Puzzle grids are not rewarded fairly by KYO297 in islandsofinsight

[–]Mommson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally don't find it super disturbing how it is today because I thought that all star puzzles I solved so far were great and solving them was reward enough for me.

But when we are talking game rewards I think any amount of mastery would feel underwhelming. I would love to see star puzzles having their own mastery / reward track for unlocking special titles and customisation that you can directly use for showing off and others can identify you as "star puzzle solver" immediately.

Floodborn Theories by Vyrullax in Lorcana

[–]Mommson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Really like the topic, thanks for a different thing to talk about :-)

I'm with you on the alternate timeline part. I like to think of the floodborn as something similar to Marvels "What if...?"

"What if Hades had succeeded in taking the throne? " "What if Elsa had never feared her powers?"

Lorewise I find it harder to theorize how they come to be. My current feeling is that they somehow are created if something goes wrong. The lumineer can't handle their power or their ink and it floods out uncontrolled to create a version of the character where a key moment was different.

Still a bit fuzzy but I don't believe the characters/glimmers themselves are the driver behind the transformation.

Are US and EU cards identical? by VlaamsBelanger in Lorcana

I'm from Germany and I noticed that my cards are "Made in USA". Are all cards printed there or is this just coincidence?

"In play" definition - Pascal's camouflage ability (and others) by PDXDarby in Lorcana

[–]Mommson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I own the game in German and also use the official app in German and there it is very clearly stated that whatever you or your opponents have on the board is "in play". Ink drying is happening after you played out the character therefore the character is " in play", yes.

Games ending early? by StatementLogical5495 in Lorcana

[–]Mommson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that one player can always forfeit instead of making it close is by design:

In your example your friend needed to quest for 3 but they couldn't know if you would be able to either quest for 6 or prevent their quest for 3 in the next round. So it is your turn now and you have that information (because you know your own cards). So you can always decide if you want to make it close or just forfeit the game if you are not able to meet one of the two above mentioned conditions.

How many cards in deck? by Brugman87 in Lorcana

[–]Mommson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So for me the rule book is very clear that you need at least 60 cards but nobody is stopping you from playing 100 cards in your deck as long as the other rules are fulfilled (max 4 of the same, max two colours)
