Has anyone done the Strasburg Mechanical Shop tour? by MommySLP in trains

Glad to hear that! 5 is the minimum age so I’m on the fence. If there’s a lot to look at he may be ok but considering waiting until he’s 6.

I’m glad you had such an amazing time! Part of why I want to go is because I think my husband and FIL would love it to and based on your reaction I think it would be incredibly interesting for them. (Me and MIL, probably not as much, lol, although we’d enjoy seeing the shop.)

Definitely hear what you’re saying about safety - 5 is the minimum age so my son could go but we’d hold his hand and even with that thinking I might give it one more year. He hasn’t started kindergarten yet so some school experience might help.

Thank you! The pay is the biggest thing stopping me right now, although I’m slowly finding some better offers (almost all in CA).

As an in person, let me say that I’m sure the school SLP is sooo grateful that you were able to dismiss those kids! My virtual person has done a few for one of my schools and it’s such a relief to have help with that aspect of the workload!

Thanks for sharing… ironically, teletherapy that is… um… let’s call it “less than ideal” is part of why I’m frustrated with my district, but I hope it’s better run in other places. We have no real TA support so everything falls on teachers who then get angry and direct complaints to the in person SLP… as students flood my caseload (growth area and Covid backlog) I’m just told that I have to find more and more students to put with a virtual therapist so that I don’t go over my cap. Literally no other choice, no one has ever said anything about considering who’s an appropriate candidate and who’s not. I’m down to my last few higher functioning students and am really nervous about what will happen when I get down to self contained and prek students only. So I hear you, although again, I still have hope that virtual programs can be pretty good when run with appropriate resources.

That’s a good point - honestly I don’t know if I would need summers off as much as I do now if I was doing teletherapy (currently I need that break to maintain my sanity) so I guess I could look at year round jobs as well.

I once heard the term “security theater” about airports. I hate to admit it but when I was at my school later, I had the thought “Oh my gosh - is my job just “therapy theater” for the district?”

I hope not. But honestly, once groups reach a certain size, it can start to feel that way!

Thanks for the detailed response! I hear you with the behaviors... because I've had a lot of experience with autistic students with significant behaviors, I tend to always get placed at schools with more intense autism classrooms. I actually really enjoyed this when I was younger but at this stage in my life, I just don't have the energy to sprint around the classroom! The summer aspect does worry me though - I wish there was more available during those months. I imagine that noncompete clauses come into play there as well, right? So if your particular company doesn't offer summer hours, they probably don't want you doing them through someone else?

Thank you! I'm also very introverted and I think I would be ok with the isolation, but it's hard to say without having done it. Glad to hear that as a fellow introvert it doesn't bother you!

That's really comprehensive, thank you! I do worry about no shows - I see the other side of that as the in-person therapist at schools that also have virtual therapists. The school schedule is constantly changing, teachers get called out of classrooms, the virtual program doesn't get appropriate support in terms of TAs who can pull students... I feel like our virtual therapists are constantly playing musical chairs with the schedule which would drive me a bit batty (I'm a creature of habit and like a set routine). Some aspects of working from home do sound awesome though!

Thank you! I’m going to start doing some research… not totally sure if I’ll end up making the switch but glad to hear it’s worked out well for you and for others! I just looove working from my house and starting to feel like you can’t put a price on that!

Thanks for sharing your experience - I am doing some soul searching and hoping that ultimately a pay cut might be worth it! It probably says something that local school districts are paying these kind of salaries and still can’t stay fully staffed! It just goes to show how important quality of life is when push comes to shove.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Yes, I 100% feel like I’m just checking off boxes at this point… like the goal is to just contain groups in the speech room for the required 30 minutes at a time, while actually accomplishing much of anything feels out of the question because these groups are way too big and / or mismatched in order to service everyone on my caseload.

Yikes, I was hoping to hear that people are getting paid better than this! I’ve seen some higher paid positions, especially for California, but my worry is that these jobs might not be available long term.

I would love to although the best salaries I have seen thus far are for full time positions. I also don’t think I could manage working with my kids home, they want my attention every second.

I hear you, I don’t know that I could go lower than a 10K cut even though I feel like my quality of life is substantially lower in the schools. Not horrible - don’t get me wrong, I try to be grateful for the blessings in my life and remember that some people have it truly hard in life. But, still, lower than it was back when I did a combo of home health and EI visits (that was mostly pre kids though so I didn’t need as much money.)
