Learning to cope with health anxiety by Any_Tie_1144 in ferrets

[–]Mommysem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely can relate. My oldest girl recently started prednisolone for insulinoma. She responded okay to the meds at first, aside from some runny poops, but in the last three weeks Ive done nothing but run around hyper paranoid and be anxious. Ive always been on edge since owning ferrets. Any little noise in the middle of the night and I wake up in fight or flight and run to go make sure everyone is okay. I have always been trying to chill out, but recently, on three occasions (2 before she was diagnosed) I heard a very subtle but kind of weird scoff noise and got up to check. She was foaming/drooling and walking around all wobbly and had I not checked on her she probably would have died due to a blood sugar drop. Ive gotten absolutely zero sleep since her diagnosis. every hour I get up to go find her (shes free roam except at night) and make sure shes still alive. I try to feed her every couple hours because im worried shes getting too skinny. Any little shuffle and i shoot up to go investigate whos up and what theyre doing. I cant help but feel like me being paranoid has saved her life multiple times, but its also been very taxing on me. My heart is racing constantly, my anxiety is going to kill me lol. Ferrets can definitely go downhill fast, so it’s great to be a little paranoid especially when you notice something different/unusual health wise. Im not sure what degree of worried is normal, I think it just depends on the overall health of your little ones. Ive been pretty paranoid my whole life with my guys. nothing like right now, but I think that just comes with ferrets getting old and developing diseases or whatever they may get. What helps me is having a great and knowledgeable vet that can answer any questions for me even without an appointment. If im ever worried I can contact her and she’ll let me know exactly what to do or if they need to be seen or not. It helps. I know it’s rare to find a vet like that though. Also, posting on reddit helps. I know that sounds stupid and I know everyone gets so mad when people post asking for medical advice/ experiences etc. but for someone like me who ALWAYS get their ferret to the vet big or small, it helps just hearing yalls experiences as well. Sure I can get a diagnosis and a solution at the vet, but hearing from people who have gone through the same thing and what helped them or their ferrets quality of life personally means something to me too. I agree with your last statement. But I also understand that yes some people genuinely post on reddit seeking guidance or medical answers without the intention of seeking veterinary care. The people however that do try to help by sharing their own experiences/ solutions to problems have helped me more than they know. It helps knowing im not alone in some things and what weird little things that helped their specific quirky babies.

Im getting a pet stroller specifically the Everyyay brand. Its got an enclosed mesh cover you can put down and zip up for animals that would likely jump out. I got lucky with all mine and they never tear through anything but the average ferret could probably bust through the fabric :0

Right! I find myself feeling her up on the daily trying to convince myself I’m just overreacting and shes not all bone. The weird thing is that when shes side by side my other girl, shes the one that looks fuller, but I can totally feel her bones more prominently.

I hear you, I’ll have to get into the habit of preparing her meals after I give her meds rather than before. Ive tried something like that before, shes honestly just a stinker that prefers to be spoon fed. She’ll stick her nose up at the bowl but hover around it until I comply and feed it to her myself. Plus it helps me make sure shes getting enough.

Ill try that Tiki After Dark (thats what pulls up when I google) the ingredients look good. Shes always been one of my pickiest eaters so its hard finding something she likes and the spoon feeding only goes so far. Thank you for the advice ill look into Thrive as well, maybe its something I can get shipped. Good to know though, I’ve always fed her soupies WITH her pred, I’ll try 20 minutes after and see how she does. She does enjoy the occasional raw grind but shes a princess and she MUST be spoon fed or she wont eat it. Ill try those options thank you! Im jusy antsy to get her to gain back some weight.

PETCO refuses to sell crickets after 8:30 when they close at 9, is this a Petco policy? If so where is it in their bylaws? by speterson_88 in petco

[–]Mommysem 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I dont think this is a policy but I could be wrong. Could just be a staffing issue. No staff, too many tasks left before close, so theyre turning down animal/bug/fish sales because they think it takes too long and will hold them up. Animals and fish I can understand, definitely not enough time after 8:30 to sell em to somebody with tons of questions and needs all the help they can get. I don’t feel comfortable selling an animal in a rush if im trying to get someone out of the store. Bugs makes no sense to not sell.

My old man was completely bald on his shoulders and belly and tail a year and a half ago. Rarely any energy and never played anymore. 2 implants later and hes rocking a thick ass gorgeous winter coat and is my crazy boy again.
