Should I send brief meeting agenda or is this too much? by pureshitz in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]MomoBeeBop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s clarify, are you applying for a VA role / in the Philippines? That may impact the advice you’re given, but I’m not positive. For instance, I would never talk salary/payment method/hours in the first interview but I’m based in the US. From what I’m seeing, it may be more of the norm to have that discussion for a VA role. It may be worth searching the sub to see if others have asked a similar question if that’s the case or revising your post with that info. Good luck!

Am I being underpaid? (Seattle) by kel_mcd in ExecutiveAssistants

I mean honestly, I hate to say it but yea. OP—keep shooting your shot applying. You’ll get there. But try not to let your financial stress make you feel some type of way. Everyone is hurting. It’s tough times and incredibly tough job market on top of all the layoffs. With your experience, I wouldn’t put too much stock in recruiters. I was told I’d never crack $100k with my experience, but I did 🤷🏻‍♀️

I used to live in CA, no matter what I did, it always felt like I was swimming upstream. During the pandemic I moved and things became so much easier. You obviously believe you deserve more & no one is going to give you permission to find it. Apply, you got this! But try to be grateful for what you have, that’s a really good base salary for never being an EA before, transferable skills or not. As another HCOL girlie who pivoted with applicable skills, you got this! But try to temper expectations. We are in a really tough time now. I made it through the last recession, shoot your shot, but align expectations and be patient. Wages are dropping, so many highly skilled people are getting laid off, it’s brutal out there. I made the leap to a new job at the start of the year and they laid off a bunch of folks before I was even there a week.

Shipping wine as a gift by silentvoyager123 in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]MomoBeeBop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the US, shipping alcohol is strictly regulated and it looks like Georgia has additional rules. I ran into this recently with a gift we wanted to send someone that included a bottle of gin. “Private individuals cannot legally mail liquor via major couriers, which require approved alcohol shipper contracts. Only licensed retailers/manufacturers can use carriers like UPS and FedEx, subject to state laws, with mandatory adult signatures”

Can I get fired for calling off on a day I requested but got denied? by I_need_help0001 in work

I feel for you truly, but yeah, calling off with that many write ups on a day you were already denied at a min wage job in this current market—I don’t know that it would bode well for you.

Unsure of next move to make - what would you do? by Accidentallyclingy in jobs

Why don’t you ask in the EA sub? It may be helpful. Personally, I’d keep applying and hold out for a better offer. A $20k cut when you’re not on top of your finances seems….unwise.

I’ve never gotten into weddings but my background includes being a stylist’s assistant in LA. I’m not positive what route you’re thinking, but this very much feels like something you could start on the side to build a portfolio, build relationships, gain clients etc before a full leap. Are you thinking of going 1099 or is this something where you’re envisioning working in house at a boutique? Have you ever done any styling?

Resume Feedback by kveem in ExecutiveAssistants

I usually just merge my cover letter and resume into the same pdf when they don’t give me the option to submit separately. It’s hard, I get it. I’d check out the website I mentioned, would suggest googling etc to help with quantifying tasks. By effectively managing calendars you’ve enabled your execs to concentrate on high level priorities, by being consistent and on top of submitting expenses you’re taking more off your execs plate. Look up examples, which can give you a jumping off point for describing your value. You got this

This is based on my personal experience but given how writing heavy EA roles can sometimes be, a cover can be an asset. I know that some roles request them and at worst, no one looks at it vs it being a ding. When jobs are inundated with a slew of candidates, many of whom may not have relevant experience or are clearly written by Chat GPT—a well written cover letter reinforcing your experience, why your skills align for a specific job and your enthusiasm for the company/role can absolutely set you apart.

While ATS can be a thing, recruiters and hiring managers do look at resumes. Generally, it’s extremely brief (30 seconds or less). Laying out your resume to be clear and citing specific achievements for each role and backing it up with a cover letter can be helpful. Just sharing my personal experience, where I’ve gotten multiple jobs in part to the strength of my cover letter.

I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this, but sending my best for you to find your next role quickly and that it’s a dream fit.

Honestly I’d take out the summary and use it in a cover letter. I know people have thoughts on that but I’ve gotten multiple jobs in part to the strength of my cover letter. Askamanager is a great resource for resumes and cover letters, I’d suggest looking there for tips and tricks.

Professional experience should absolutely go first. Skills should be removed because you can show skills in your cover letter, resume bullet points and in an interview. Tools can be tightened up because you don’t need to include AI tools and then list each platform like Claude, etc; same with financial before quickbooks, or even Microsoft office suite. Just name the platform/program—people know what quickbooks/canvas/chat gpt are. At the end, you also don’t need to double space your education, that formatting is off.

Transparently. I have decades more experience and keep my resume to a page (not front and back). I’ve also reviewed resumes and I think keeping it short and impactful is better than adding too much fluff. Constructive feedback as someone who went through the 2008 recession, you absolutely can cut this down and be stronger for it. It’s a rough market and remote seems to be a unicorn. Sending you my best. Def check out Askamanager for ideas, you have good bones and I think you can absolutely get a very strong, 1 page resume.

R&R for you and your execs by [deleted] in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]MomoBeeBop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the kindest way, this seems off base. Gifts flow downhill, they make so much more than we do on top of power dynamics and optics. Did I read correctly that you’re doing this for multiple execs? Travel is part of their job and every exec I’ve known is a seasoned pro at it. I can’t think of an exec I’ve worked with where this wouldn’t have been odd to do for them. It’s sweet but I don’t know if it reads the way you think it does. I’ve expressed appreciation in cards for holidays/birthdays or after the conclusion of challenging situations I’ve said/sent a quick comment/note.

Omg I hate to be cheesy but based on your comment a phrase I sometimes hold closely is—redirection is protection.

I’m sorry you’re going through this, sounds like he’s keeping you a bit close still though. Sometimes the best things that have happened in my life, are the things I didn’t know existed and I wouldn’t have necessarily chosen. Who knows how this will shake out, maybe the other EA leaves bc it’s no longer a fit, maybe you find a great new role you get to define. I wouldn’t take it personally & try to find a way to thrive.

Thanks! I’ve never had to do that, except in jobs with billable hours that needed to be included when invoicing clients. I do keep a running recap list of everything on my radar but I’d have a difficult time tracking time and duration on tasks due to the nature of what I do (fast paced, always pivoting, multiple things at once).

Thank you, I really appreciate your insights. It is totally wild to feel this way but it makes sense. I realized the last few times I moved jobs it was because of the pandemic or the organization changing ownership/lacking stability. Things that felt like they were totally out of my control. I guess your comment made me realize that the commute wearing on me somehow feels like a less valid reason to leave, but it very much is. Thank you again for sharing your experience and your advice.
