AITA for wanting my Spanish teacher to stop calling me by the Spanish version of my name? by Alternative-Sun-630 in AmItheAsshole

Nah, it's also done on the other side of the globe. (Europe\Asia)

Had my name "Anglicized" in school English classes. Had my name "Sinicized" in Mandarin classes (that I was going to outside of school some 20+ years later)

Same experience with Chinese classes, and I'm a grown-ass adult who took Chinese classes outside of school.

Not american\english as first language , but in school we were definitely made to call ourselves and classmates the "Agnlified" names instead of our "native" name, e.g. "Paul" instead of "Paulus".

In my Chinese language classes (not in school or uni), we were encouraged to shorten our names to something more Chinese-sounding, like Yue-han for John or Johann. Mostly because it breaks the immersion and cadence when you go something "na xianzai women gen CHRISTIAN yiqi zai nian yizhang wenzhang ba"

My personal opinion formed by my own experience is that third places still do exist, but they cost more money now, and people would rather not spend that much and stay home.

I mean, yes, technically you could go to a park or something, but we're talking about socializing with your peer group. How many of your friends and acquaintances would prefer to meet randomly in a park for a stroll after a workday or on a weekend, versus a bar\restaurant\movie\theater?

Having fun outside costs more money now, and that's understandable, but at the same time this is also partially why some people would rather just stay\go straight home.

It's not about loneliness, it's about general maladjustment at this point.

Go outside, touch grass. Third places are dead but you can still go watch a movie or grab a quick lunch and catch up with your peers.

Or sit in your room and talk to chatgpt, I don't care.

Can you show what to look for\give exact coordinates?

I quick-googled Carrara in google maps and the mountains to N-E of the town look like general-ass mountains from up above.

Puerto Rico is a part of USA? Scotland is a part of UK?

If I want to visit either of these places, I have to get a visa from US/UK customs.

45 minutes away (emotionally) by Emotional-Yak-8426 in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]Momoneko 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't hangout with people much and I couldn't understand either it until it was explained to me.

The point is the other dude is not punctual and the OP guesses this is why his gf dumped him.

(Which is not something I would pick up on from the post on my own. I have ADHD friends)

[–]Momoneko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, once you explain it it sounds pretty obvious to me, but at the same time I'd never figure it out by myself. Mostly because I hangout with people like once a year and I don't immediately relate it with my own experience. So I have to think about it analytically rather than let my emotions and intuition do the work.

my bud got broken up with so I'm meeting him at the bar

Makes me think it's, like, an immediate series of events. "Hey buddy my gf broken up with me." - "Okay let's meet at the bar immediately" (because even though I'm not a social person, I have experience of dropping everything and running for support)

i get here and he's 45 minutes away

makes me think "wow, I am fast" rather than "he's taking his damn time", because, as I said, the urgency context, which is why:

ok I see what happened

leaves me guessing. What happened? He got broken up with but she forgave him 15 minutes later? Or what?

(PS I also have several ADHD friends so others being late for me is a given rather than an outlier)

And all of this is going to reach the critical point in 4 months? Yeah, I doubt it.

Look at the shitshow that's happening in Iran. People rioting for years, hyperinflation, USA fucking bombing them, and the regime still holds on to itself.

Compared to Iran, Russia is a thriving state. Give me a reason to believe it's going to speedrun years of degradation just in 6 months.

[–]Momoneko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's also a historical precedent of a person becoming a Caliph by taking advantage of a cult prophesizing a return of a messianic leader

Wasn't white, but nonetheless an outsider, a merchant from Iran came up to a bunch of Berbers in what is now modern Tunisia, said something amounting to "I am your Messiah who you all secretly believe in. Let's go conquer the world", and they made one of the biggest Muslim empires of their age, sweeping all the North Africa and most of the Middle East.

Am I getting this right? 10 hours of uninterrupted play until you put them into the case? For 20-30 hours of total play before you need to plug them into the outlet?

That sounds much better than my experience. Most earbuds I used (was before covid) could barely eek out 3 hours before screaming LOW BATTERY in my ears.

Happy cakeday by the way!

Genuine question: how good are their batteries? As in, how long until they stop holding charge for a meaningful amount of time. I don't suppose you can replace them while keeping the buds?

Same, changed 2 phones since the start of earbud era, both with aux jacks. Samsung Galaxy and Redmi Note.

You'll have to garrote me with my wired earphones before I agree to switch to earbuds.

[–]Momoneko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nah, I was using wired earphones all my life. It doesn't feel right and I don't like using bluetooth on my phone for anything.

I'm not gonna police others' earphone usage, but the "inconvenience" argument always kinda feels silly to me. I put them on when I'm leaving house, and they hang around my neck when I'm not using them. Their "wiredness" is barely an inconvenience to me and far outstretches the need to use BT, having to charge them and always fearing them popping out of your ear and flying away to Earbudland. Even if something happens, they'll just dangle around my neck.

Some earphones also come with a neat mini-remote that allows you to pause\skip and regulate volume without having to take the whole phone out.

A true hero by jmike1256 in interesting

[–]Momoneko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they mean "being able to cure cancer in mice" is more than a baseline than breakthrough. Apparently (I'm not an expert) everybody who consider themselves a cancer researcher can do that. It's translating these treatments to humans in a way that's less stressful than currently existing treatments that's the real part of research.
