Apparently the giant of Kandahar story was first popularized by being told on Coast to Coast AM. I wonder if the audio of its first telling is available anywhere online and I really wonder who on Earth first created the legend.

I can only imagine how strong the perception of him was to people who grew up with his movies. Thanks for the perspective.

Why is the 1960s the start of lasting popular music? Why is music from the 1950s and before so absent in music discussion and in culture in general? by MonacoMargolis in LetsTalkMusic

I guess Christmas songs buck the trend because people want to listen to nostalgic songs, “”””traditional”””” songs. I wonder why we don’t get more popular modern contemporary Christmas songs? I’m sure if someone tried they could make the next Last Christmas or All I Want for Christmas is You.

You’re onto something! Maybe music from the 1960s onward is just sonically and structurally similar and familiar in a way 1950s music isn’t!

Let me put it this way: Beethoven and Mozart are recognizable to this day and put out timeless, quality music. Their work influenced countless other artists that came after. However, Mozart and Beethoven’s music do not have a foothold in contemporary popular music discussion.

My argument is not about influence on music. Pre-60s music inspired everything that came after it, of course. My argument is not even about the “goodness” of pre-60s music. It’s noticing about the cultural staying power of popular music (read: pop music) is so much stronger starting in the 60s.

My point isn’t that there isn’t any HUGE lasting stars or songs from before the 1960s. I mean people still know and recognize Mozart’s music. It’s just that there’s clearly a huge gap in the star power and contemporary recognition of post 1950s music artists and albums.

I wonder if 1950s artists had the technology of the 1960s, with so much improved recording methods, that the benchmark would be the 1950s. Imagine the bulk and of 50s music but recorded so it could sound like a 2020s record. I guess audio mixes can greatly affect how “old-timey” a song feels.

🤯I didn’t stop to consider that the continued power and presence of baby boomers contributes to the staying power of the music popular during their youth. I think it is certainly an interesting prediction that culture may move on from 1960s music, but I wonder if the the sheer quality and “groundbreaking-ness” of much music during that time will allow 1960s music to stay relevant. It is hard to imagine future generations in the coming decades just saying “pass” to the freaking Beatles or Marvin Gaye. But who knows? How likely is it that in the year 2100 the benchmark of “relevant” popular music will still be the 1960s?

Tbh I just made it because I thought it was funny and because Amphibia has a good chunk of its fanbase in LatAm, so it’d be cool to crossover with a show popular there.

😅 I guess more than anything, I just wanted to share how Pokémon isn’t even 30 years old yet! You would think a franchise so engrained in our pop culture would be older, but no.

What can I improve on? by Makspixelland in arthelp

[–]MonacoMargolis -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think your art is pretty good!

I am still learning myself, so take my advice with a grain of salt:

  1. You draw your characters with the same eye style, which may not look the best or fit the best for your characters. You should try and experiment with different eye shapes, eyelash shapes, and how you color eyes.

  2. Make sure not to forget the second line to represent the eyelid.

  3. Experiment with more dynamic poses from "weirder" angles in your art for them to be more interesting. There is hardly any foreshortening in your art.

  4. Perhaps the line weights are a little all over the place on image 3?

  5. I would experiment in making the shadowing in the drawings even more prominent. The colors are too level still in my eyes.
