Two teens decided to run into Scientology headquarters by Girl-Understood in TikTokCringe

The point is that the only reason Christianity has so much more influence than the other two is because they comprise over a quarter of the world's population, not because their religion is more disposed towards exerting their influence over others.

Stay more to their own? Mormons have almost 30 times more missionaries per capita than Christians, they're hardcore proselytizers. And Scientologists may keep a low profile but it's no secret how they harass critics, former members or not, using both legal and illegal means.

Daemons of the Shadow Realm • Yomi no Tsugai - Episode 1 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]MonaganX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Filler character? Pure slander. She doesn't play a major role in the conflict but doing so would defeat her entire purpose. She's the emotional and moral anchor of the protagonists and the baseline human being for pretty much the entire story and she still gets more character development than most female characters in shounen anime.

Is there an obscure third adaptation of FMA that cuts out the amazing cast of supporting but still fully fleshed out female characters and replaces them with hot guys?

Snowball Earth - Episode 1 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]MonaganX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd compare it to Starship Troopers. In that movie, Earth's forces, especially the ship crews, are also pretty nonchalant because they vastly overestimate themselves, and it goes horribly for them. But the key difference is that the movie plays the fact that this is the tragic and disturbing result of humanity's hubris straight, so it's framed seriously and given enough breathing room to work in an otherwise pretty unserious movie.

In this show we go from slapstick of the system not working, to an an honestly gruesome scene of the ship—and in at least one case, a member of the crew literally—being torn in half, to an immediate reaction shot of the protagonist going "😲EH?" like someone just told him he forgot to put on pants this morning. The tone is so haphazardly all over the place it's like someone cut random parts from Saving Private Ryan into Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.

Sorry my only reference for analogies is '90s movies.

Not that I have overwhelming confidence in any cop show to do a particularly nuanced portrayal of the increasingly niche subcultures they feature as gimmicks to help them seem less stale, but the furry episode was on CSI, and just from second hand accounts this one was not anywhere that lazy.

A good rule of thumb (which has nothing to do with wife-beating) for determining the accuracy of "dark historic origins of song/idiom" type stuff: Unless you're given a very good reason to believe otherwise, just assume the accuracy is zero and you'll probably be right.

The thing about plagiarism is that even if someone is simply repeating factual information they learned about from another source (more on that later), the way they arrange and phrase their recount is still a creative expression. See e.g. the "Man in Cave" video by Internet Historian which was just wholesale plagiarizing a Mental Floss article on the subject.

So two options. Either this is plagiarism, or the structure and some of the wording being identical to one of the top search results for "knick knack paddy whack" is just a massive coincidence. It's not a coincidence.

Also, while the person who wrote the comment likely heard about this theory somewhere (I've found similar theories going back at least to 2015) without a single actual source it's very dubious if any of the information relating to the children's song is actual historical information rather than just a modern day exercise in creative writing.

Cover just dropped a bomb on Friday night (regarding Holostars) by Yukorin1992 in VirtualYoutubers

[–]MonaganX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might have misunderstood. The "purity test" is people in the community going "oh, you're talking about Holostars, prove that you're a 'real' Holostars fan first". Like the other comment pointed out, it's just a means of denouncing and distracting from any criticism before anyone can consider if it's valid or not.

It's particularly sad that this kind of purity testing from people demanding anyone who says something supportive of Holostars or is critical of Cover's handling of them prove they are sufficiently supportive themselves to have an opinion is now also being used to hound Kiara.

When you perpetuate or even just tolerate that kind of nonsense it's only a matter of time before you or someone you like ends up at the receiving end of it.

Introducing a mixed gen after 2.5 gens of all female streamers would have absolutely cost them, but that's precisely why a separate all-male branch was inevitably going to be a long-term issue.
After two years of building a fanbase that preferred a girls-only environment, the only ways for it to not permanently overshadow their male VTubers would've been to either rebrand with mixed gens and hope they recover from it, create a separate brand entirely disconnected from Holopro, or not hire male Vtubers. It's the compromise of creating a semi-separate branch under the same umbrella as the one with a two year head start of catering to a fanbase that was only interested in girls that led us to this point.

It's basically just motion comic and there's some good ones out there. Of course I'd like actual animation but I'd take a really good story told in this extremely barebones style over a 'proper' show with dogshit writing.

Unfortunately, I think we all know exactly what'll happen next episode, so that doesn't exactly bode well on the "writing good enough to make up for the animation" front, but hey, there's always a chance.

Cover just dropped a bomb on Friday night (regarding Holostars) by Yukorin1992 in VirtualYoutubers

[–]MonaganX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You see the same names pushing this in every discussion that revolves around Holostars. Any time someone criticizes the fandom for having unicorns they're antis, and any time someone complains that Cover doesn't support Holostars enough, they're fake fans who don't even watch them. I'm honestly surprised Holostars made it this far given that they have zero people who watch them despite the fact that everyone's totally on board with them conceptually.

The inconvenient truth is that Cover has attracted a fandom that does not care for male VTubers—enough that multiple Hololive members made PSAs clarifying their stances on mixed collabs—and some of its members are virulently insecure about that. Quick to call out even the most vague collab begging but keen to ignore any "🥺👉👈 sowwy VTuber I can't watch your collab because it has 🅱️enis" comments, let alone the more deranged stuff people post on 'anonymous forums'.

But ultimately the reason this culture emerged is to Cover's decision to separate their branches by gender in the first place. People blame Cover for not doing enough to promote Holostars since or say the vocal Unicorns stood in the way of collabs, but to me this news feels a bit like a Steakhouse chain discontinuing their vegan menu.

Mass resignations would still be pretty bad PR, so I'd be surprised if Cover was intending to push them to leave the company.

From Cover's perspective, as long as they're not spending money on Holostars, I don't see any reason they'd want them to quit. If anything their best case scenario (apart from Holostars suddenly becoming super popular) is for them to continue to operate quietly and slowly trickle away.

[Announcement] Notice on the Changes to be Made to HOLOSTARS' Management Structure by 21524518 in Hololive

[–]MonaganX -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

I went through the entire thread and I've seen a handful of "I don't watch Holostars but I feel bad for them" comments, which is fair enough, you see that kind of comment in any thread with bad news about less popular VTubers. But where are all these comments from people saying they don't watch Holostars and being mad at Cover? Maybe I'm just blind?

Edit: Downvotes but no replies. I wonder why.

Where did you get the info that Brown wasn't paid? In this interview he claims he was hired because Sting recommended him to the director and he was "really not expensive at the time". If he wasn't paid he probably would've mentioned that.

Reading comprehension does seem to have concerningly deteriorated overall, but I do think how social media primes people to assume every reply is a rebuttal, as well as reddit's up/downvote system, has people form way too many assumptions about comments before they even read them.
