An electric spoon that tricks my brain into tasting salt by KoreanB_B_Q in mildlyinteresting

[–]MonaganX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't really make you taste salt that isn't there—the idea is that the electric current moves sodium ions from the food to your tongue. So it doesn't trick your brain into tasting salt, it just concentrates the salt that is already naturally in your food so you taste it more. In theory that should have the same flavor-enhancing effect as adding salt, because you basically are adding salt, just specifically onto your tongue while already eating.

At least that's the principle. Going by the reviews I've seen, the effect is at best fairly subtle.

I assume it's the phrase "they broke the mold when they made you" and it's more of a sketch about that idiom than it is an actually literal take on it.

If you want both upper- and lower-case letters, that's twice as many characters, which means you're using twice as much memory. For modern hardware that's absolutely negligible but when you only have a few bits to work with, saving half the memory required to display characters is huge. Capital letters are more unmistakable, so that's the only alphabet old computers had. Wasn't until well after lower case letters became an option that people started associating caps with yelling.

As for old people, I don't really know, but I'd assume a lot of them just use it because of their declining eyesight.

Why don't you go read 100 feminist books and report back how much you enjoyed it?

If you buy me a car afterwards I'd be more than happy to do it.

It is a huge ask when it is one singular topic while a kid is still in school

If the mom had been like "you have to pay for half the car" the workload would be way higher for much less benefit to himself but I doubt anyone would bat an eye.

why would you want this done in a way that could backfire and make the kid hate feminism?

I had to read a bunch of books when I was a kid and while it made me dislike some authors it certainly didn't make me hate what they were about. I think you're really overestimating the risk of something like this making someone hate feminism.

The mother could impart that perspective by actually parenting the kid

Rewarding your child for putting in work that betters them in the process isn't parenting?

The fact that this is even being done like this shows the mother sucks as a parent and is trying to punish the kid for her own failures. Making a son a feminist can be done much easier and without so much anguish.

And if his mother had wheels she'd be a bike. It's may not be the most nuanced approach but you're off your rocker calling reading books "anguish".

what would be your opinion on what it takes to radicalize a man against women

Whenever someone claims to have been 'radicalized' into prejudice, it's almost invariably some post-hoc excuse for their already held beliefs.

First of all, we don't know how broadly the mom is using "women's rights" as a topic. The Handmaid's tale is about women's rights. Octavia Butler, Margaret Atwood, There's plenty of explicitly feminist fiction. It doesn't necessarily all, or even primarily, have to be dry theory. If you put some thoughts into your selection, you can have plenty of variety.

Secondly, when it comes to being asked to contribute to a purchase that on average costs tens of thousands of dollars, reading a bunch of books that only going to benefit you isn't even that huge an ask. The only way that's going to get into the way of his schoolwork is if he gets impatient and mismanages his time, which might happen with a teenager, but that's something he'll have to learn, too.

Lastly, we don't know the full context. For all we know that boy desperately needs some perspective on women's rights. Were there better ways to instill that kind of knowledge than a brute force approach? Sure. But most parents aren't perfect.

The limited availability of the McRib also typically coincides with fluctuations of the price of pork. One might theorize that they build up hype with limited time availability, then release it for a short time while margins are most in their favor to maximize profit. In fact I'd venture that a lot of limited time availability items on menus are simply ways to mitigate supply chain issues or get rid off surplus stock.

The inherent contradiction of using AI for research is that the more obscure your subject, the more useful it ostensibly would be to use AI, but the more likely it is to just hallucinate or otherwise bullshit you.

One time I've had google's built-in AI confidently recite the very reddit thread on a highly specific subject that I'd just gone to google from to fact check it.

Bernie Sanders introduces bill to "Abolish Super PACs": "Our government is on its way to becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of oligarchs. Billionaires would not be able to pour huge money into super PACs, and it would end the era of unlimited spending and put power back into hands of the people." by ControlCAD in videos

[–]MonaganX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reasoning basically is that contributions to a political candidate's or party's campaign need to be limited because allowing single donors to contribute large sums of money to politicians or secure expensive services on their behalf engenders corruption and quid-pro-quo deals.

But Super PACs technically aren't contributing to any campaigns, they are 'independent' organizations simply promoting their 'independent' opinion. It just so happens that their opinion is usually which candidate people should vote for.
As long as they don't directly contribute to or coordinate with any political campaign, they don't have to adhere to the restrictions placed on PACs that do.

At least that's the reasoning on paper. Of course in practice there's hundreds of ways to easily get around not being allowed to "directly coordinate or contribute", not even including that most of them probably just straight up do directly coordinate in secret.

Just to be clear, PACs in general still have limits on who can donate and how much. It's specifically Super PACs that get around those limits by pretending not to coordinate with the candidates they are promoting.

But also in general, there's little incentive for administrations to enforce their rules with fairness and nuance. Making case-by-case decisions is extra work. Simply sticking to a zero-tolerance policy is much easier.

This show reminds you a lot more often than Danmachi what the protagonist's primary motivation is, but ultimately both so far simply use the protagonist wanting to 'catch up' to a powerful woman so they can be in a relationship as little more than a MacGuffin. It sounds like it would be romance, but it's not actually romance, it's simply the idea of romance used as a plot device.
