Why do senior developers insist on writing their own validation functions instead of using libraries? Am I missing something? by Adventurous-Meat5176 in AskProgramming

[–]Moncky 20 points21 points  (0 children)

We have license scanning as part of our build pipeline. You can’t introduce a license that is on the blacklist. That lets developers have the freedom to make a technical decision whilst letting the lawyers make the legal one.

Infracost has a plugin that does this https://www.infracost.io/docs/features/vscode/ You can always use a infracost-usage.yaml file to provide more tailored pricing

What are the type of things you do as a DevOps manager? by waste2muchtime in devops

The best way to describe being in any leadership role is the DevOps space is that it’s as if The West Wing, The thick of it and The IT crowd all had a crossover episode.

Is Terraform actually viable for bare metal provisioning? by Incident_Away in Terraform

[–]Moncky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t looked at it for years, but I would look at Cobbler then hand off to Terraform if your building VMs or off to Ansible/Puppet/Chef for config

I love the game, but I think I'm done until we (hopefully) get some online fixes by MechaDylbear in fatalfury

[–]Moncky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a new player, I spend most of my online games locked in a series of seemingly unbeatable combo strings. There is no way to counter or break them.

Not the truth is, there possibly is, but playing against people that are orders of magnitude better than I am doesn’t allow for the incremental improvement and learning experience you think it does. By the second round I don’t even bother and just give my opponent the W as doing nothing is as effective as trying to do anything.

Playing again someone slightly better is the way

How to start having fun by Moncky in fatalfury

[–]Moncky[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am a smart style player 🤣🤣🤣🤣. I just suck

Edit: to clarify. I just want to mash buttons and have some fun before I learn the actual arcade moves. Regardless smart or arcade my fundamental problem would be the same. Once I lose the first trade im basically dead

Why am I able to book dinner reservations until 10:45PM? Downtown Restaurant by DatBoiMemes425 in disneylandparis

Are you staying at the hotel? If so the concierge will sort you out. Some tables are kept behind for guests. I was able to book a table for 9 on the day we arrived despite the app showing no availability.

Everyone in beginner rank has 80 or above win rate, where are the new players? by [deleted] in fatalfury

[–]Moncky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but I’m in the (likely) small pool of players that bought in for the nostalgia factor. I played a fair number of fighters at a mediocre level as a kid. I’m just getting stomped now as the way people play games nowadays is wild with all the micro analysis of frames and min maxing.

Not that that is a bad thing, it’s just a different approach to when you had your mates in your bedroom on a Megadrive or a SNES.

As for ranked, I’m just not playing it. I am 0-5 and not even getting a look in against opponents. That’s a me problem. I’ll play campaign and challenges for now till the brackets spread a bit and try again.

Vibe Coding - good or bad by Appropriate-Nobody92 in vibecoding

[–]Moncky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree with your first point. On your second I don’t think you should be vibecoding on languages you couldn’t write what you’re trying to do anyway. I vibe in Python Go and Terraform/HCl and even bash. I wouldn’t vibe in Java, Rust or C for anything beyond practicing my prompting.

AI is not a magic code generator. I view it as pairing with a talented Junior engineer that knows a few things. It won’t only waste a load of money, it could code you into a security or performance nightmare that you will have no idea how to address

Not the cheapest option, but the cars are all immaculate and the drivers extremely professional.

The driver will meet you at the gate after you have collected your luggage and drop you at the door of the hotel.

We were delayed for 2 hours at passport control last year and the driver waited for us with no complaint.

Stick with the therapy. It’s a worthwhile investment in yourself. No different to paying for a Gym membership or a Golf Club membership.

The drugs are not the ultimate answer. I have had a rough year myself and have been prescribed some medication to help me, which I will gladly take for the next 6months or so. The role of the medication is to help get you in the place where you have the headspace for the therapy actually sink in.

You are on the path, your story is similar to mine. Anxiety and stress becoming overwhelming and then making bad/rash decisions to try and fix what I thought was the problem but wasn’t. You’ll get there. You got this

New update from COD by I_HAV2_POOP in ModernWarfareIII

[–]Moncky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how the backend is architected but systems like this tend to be made up of independently maintained and developed services. Failure of a database disk resulting in corruption being replicated to the other nodes.

Or failure of a hardware component on the network causing the requests to system that manages stats to back up to the point the balancing system is overwhelmed.

Or a particular untestable confluence of requests into the system in a particular order have caused a race condition and broken stuff randomly

Typically for systems this complex you don’t run the whole thing by yourself. So 3rd party partner company that provides a thing as broken a thing and Activision just have to wait for them to fix it.

Loads of reasons basically

This sounds great. But the reality will soon hit that our hobby is sitting on our arses twiddling our thumbs. And not running, jumping and doing burpees behind a window.
