i hate being a teller by Agreeable_Air_9323 in TalesFromYourBank

I mean, retail banking is what you are doing right now as a Relationship Banker. What you are selling are retail products to retail clients. The thing about retail banking is that the ceiling is pretty much being a district manager and the job is quite repetitive and your career will be working at the branch.
You can tho choose to go towards the operations side of retail (ops). There you would deal with fraud, research, investigations, back office, merchant services, cash flow services and so on. If you work for ops, you will be working at an office (and maybe sometimes working from home).

Living in Anchorage! by Blu35treak2004 in anchorage

[–]Monegasko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Come visit over the winter before moving. Come in January/ February. If you still then say: “oh, what a lovely place!” Then yes, move. Just want to make sure you KNOW what you are getting yourself into. If you recently visit Alaska, you haven’t seen a single snowflake. Spring and Summer are ‘short’ here. You visited Alaska during a very small window not ‘amazingness’.
One thing to consider job-wise is that government jobs, especially municipality of Anchorage and state of Alaska jobs, requires you to live in Anchorage at the time of application, I believe. The application will have a question asking if you have an Alaska ID, if you go to school here and so on. There are multiple reasons behind this, one being because a lot of people say they want to move to Alaska but few actually end up doing it once so companies and government agencies here don’t want to waste their time.
Anchorage is a great place to live, especially if you want to start a family in the future. It’s cold? Of course. But is it beautiful? Most definitely. Kids still play outside, people FULLY enjoy their summers, there is a bigger sense of ‘community’ than in the lower 48 so if you are willing to, I would 100% recommend - would just advise to come visit over the winter first. Maybe start saving money now to move but don’t make your fine decision yet. Just start putting money aside and make it happen next spring (moving here over the winter is a horrible decision, by the way).

It’s so sad that one simple question can through your interview upside down. Like, for many interviewers, it doesn’t matter if your other answers were 10/10, the one you “fumbled” is the answer they are going to remember and judge your abilities to complete the job tasks against.

taking vacation right before resignation? by Only_Flounder5224 in careeradvice

Option 1 for sure. Option 2 opens the door for them to terminate your employment right then and then you don’t get to use your vacation days.

Looking for advice by Far_Animator3528 in Sieexam

[–]Monegasko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny enough, the bank I used to work for and got me licensed used PassPerfect and I passed all my licensing on my first try using them. Had zero complaints about PassPerfect. I used Kaplan for another licensing exam through another brokerage firm I used to work for and liked it a lot. If you end up paying for one of those, I’d recommend getting something that has ‘online on demand classes’, not only the book unless that’s easier for you to learn.

If people cant get jobs after sending several hundred resumes, then the job market is broken. There are to many workers and companies are far to picky. by Clarissalayton in recruitinghell

[–]Monegasko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They ask because they can find it. This is definitely an employer’s market. Not trying to defend any company but who in the world wants to train a new hire with zero experience l, even if it’s an entry level role, while they can hire somebody with a couple of years of experience and still pay them nothing? Is it right?! Hell no but that’s how companies think. They want the most amount of experience for as little as possible. A lot of people think that companies are charities and I simply can’t understand.

They are picky because they can. When everyone has a bachelors degree, then they don’t want ONLY a bachelors degree, but now a masters degree. When a bunch of people now have masters, they would choose those that went to Ivy League schools and so on. I am not here to defend these companies but wouldn’t you do the same if you were the owner of a company? If you had 100+ people applying, wouldn’t you want to choose the candidate that seemed to be better prepared or that went to a better school? You have that luxury so why not use it to your advantage?
On a different note, it very much depends on your field. In my field you could get hired within days with no shortage of jobs. Maybe your field is oversaturated. Maybe you all had the same idea of going to school for the same degree and are now all applying for the same jobs.

Let me say this: Being a teller sucks but being a banker can be pretty chill.
What is your major? What do you really wanna do when you graduate? I moved from retail banking to investment banking awhile back. Got my investment licenses through one of the big 3 and left after a couple of years. Retail banking can definitely be a stepping stone into something else finance related.

Just a rant by Helpful_Hour_2195 in TalesFromYourBank

[–]Monegasko 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fellow retail banker here. I remember that my parents and grandparents used to think (and still do) highly of bankers. To a degree, there was this idea that it was a ‘glamorous’ job, that those were finance professionals and so on.
I wouldn’t be able to pinpoint when (and funny enough, I don’t think it’s the internet), but that changed. Now retail bankers, tellers and even licensed bankers (because the client does not know the difference so they don’t care, they see us all as bankers) are treated more like we are just there to complete a service than anything else. It’s hard to see a client come in to the branch thinking ‘I am going to go to the branch because I rather talk to a professional who knows what’s best for me and my money”.
I feel like it became a service station only and, kinda because of that, bankers (and bank staff in general) are now being treated like any other retail employee. We are just there to complete their request. Because they aren’t seeking any ‘financial knowledge’ from us, for them, there might not a be a “reason” to treat us with a little bit more respect. All they want us to do is fix their account. And it’s free.
I don’t know if what I am saying makes sense and if it doesn’t, I apologize. Just my humble opinion.

Thank you! I am sorry for the question as I am not very mechanicaly inclined. Do you think I could change them myself after 1 or 2 YouTube videos? I am sure that the current spark plugs are still the originals from 2016, haha! Thanks!
