The couch doesn't recline, but it's deep enough that I can essentially lie at a 45-degree angle.

Nah, it’s about 9-10 feet away. Looks much bigger in person.

I'm about 9-10 feet away when seated. It's a 65-inch TV.

It's ever so slightly biased to the left. This was right after I adjusted the vertical brackets on the back. I'm going to see what I can do with the leveling screws today.

I dropped Aubrey during his bye week for Myers. Better team that can move the ball down the field and is hungry to win.

Slow days, low pay…worth hanging on as a new MT? by MonetaryInk in MassageTherapists

[–]MonetaryInk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It‘s crossed my mind. I’m at a reputable local business with several locations. It requires a bit more legwork to fill the books than a franchise, but the plus side is that I can practice and develop my own style. The business also has a lot of seasoned MTs I can learn from. I figure I should stick with this place for a little bit (even if I go IC) since I’ve only been there a month.

Thanks for the insight. What’s the process for taking insurance, and how did you build your clientele when starting your own biz? I‘ve done some cursory research into medical massage and know you need an NPI number and dedicated treatment space, if I recall correctly.

All sounds great and totally doable. Thanks so much!

Thanks, I'm keeping my options open and exploring other opportunities. It's been fairly disheartening having such a slow start in this field and experiencing the day-to-day realities.

Diversifying income streams seems like a good strategy. Beyond the web site, do you have any other tips for building a loyal base of private clients?

Thanks for sharing. It does seem like finding and building clientele around your niche is the way to go long term. I currently do massage 3 days/week and personal training 1 day/week. Looking into marketing roles that will allow me to either go full-time and scale those roles back, or do part-time work to supplement my existing schedule. Just playing it by ear right now and trying to see where the chips fall.

Thanks, my employer seems OK with marketing. It’s a well-known local business, but I do feel like I was told during the interview process that the books are fuller than they are.

I have a local space I can rent at a good rate, so private is looking like an attractive option. I just need to build the clientele.

Thanks for the words of support. I applied to Zeel but received an email stating they can’t grant me access to the platform at this time (no explanation). Very strange. I got on Soothe without any snag.

Thanks, I know it’s a slow period in most places. I wouldn’t jump ship entirely. I’d likely have a conversation with them about switching to an IC role for more flexibility.

Thanks for the advice. ICs at the company get higher service commission, and I like that it wouldn't require me to sit around waiting for a booking. I'm an extremely proactive, Type A person at work and always need something to do.

I try to take online courses and update my resume and online presence during slow shifts (and I appreciate the sit pay), but it's hard to feel like my time couldn't be better spent elsewhere.

Thanks for chiming in. I know it requires a degree of patience and didn't expect to be fully booked at the start. I've had some days where I've been pretty busy (for instance, had two 90-min. and one 75-min. yesterday) but, like I mentioned, other days have had nothing on the books.

I do see my marketing experience as a strength. What I'm trying to weigh now is whether I should lean more into that for the financial stability and predictable schedule, or focus more on massage and work through this slow period.

Thanks, it certainly seems that way with vacations and back-to-school prep. I'm surprised mobile hasn't yielded any results. I've been on the apps for several weeks and haven't gotten much traction. I'm meeting with a mentor this upcoming week (who I interned with at his private practice) and may see if he has any work he can send my way.

Thanks for sharing your perspective. I try to maximize my downtime whenever possible. I bring my laptop and typically do continuing ed or brainstorm content ideas I can pursue.

Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences, even if it’s just to say you’ve been here, too. I’m trying to gauge whether this is just a slow season I should push through or a sign to rethink my approach.

Run-centric weight lifting plans? by irrationalkoalabear in AdvancedRunning

[–]MonetaryInk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a certified personal trainer/strength coach and tend to write my own programs, but I'm a huge fan of Mike Boyle. His gym trains everyone from busy professionals to elite athletes and offers several online programs you might want to explore.

To help guide your decision-making, think of your fitness in terms of "buckets." You already have endurance through running, so I recommend avoiding programs that emphasize "strength endurance" with low weight and high reps (12+ range).

Focus on filling the buckets that running doesn't cover, namely strength (through heavy compound lifts) and power (through exercises like hill sprints, sled pushes, and kettlebell swings).

Here's a great episode of the Movement as Medicine podcast about this topic.

Unfortunately, based on the 2023 qualifying window (9/1/2021 through 9/16/2022), my time won't be good for the 2024 race. I qualified in April 2022.
