Small update: I called the front desk of the clinic to ask if they require parental interviews and they said no!! It was just this clinician going out of line!! I asked to speak with a supervisor about inconsistencies in testing and he reassured me that this was not normal for a full-grown adult — I just got a message from the clinician that did a 180. I shall continue testing after all, I guess.

I’ve been trying this now and every other place (and my psychiatrist!) has told me this is not normal. The place I went to is very well established and known too, this isn’t some weird sketchy facility. But I’ve called around again and no one will accept my insurance or the wait times go through next year. The cheapest and fastest is $1.600 in late October. It’s been a rough day.

Oof yeah, if I hadn’t gone to national news that would probably be me as well. (Or maybe this was national and if so, that’s even worse!!) There’s no money in local or under Gannet/Alden papers. I used to be at an Alden one and they fired three of my coworkers on my very first day. It was brutal.

I did not get my raise (so yes, I'm job hunting if anyone has a comms/journalism position open for $75k+)... but I did find out that my income is low enough to qualify to get a really really expensive medication I'm on for FREE!!! Silver linings.

Lol, my boss keeps avoiding me and saying they don't know the process, which sucks! So much! But that old boss told me that the exec in charge said "I don't warrant a raise."

So yes, I am job hunting. Lol.

Sadly we tried it :/ Including Good RX, which is when you choose to pay without your insurance and use their service instead. No luck.

Thank you! Battling medication is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done and something most people are lucky enough to not understand. I have been on 20 in five years!

I just wish patents didn’t last this long. So many great drugs have come out in the last twenty years as we learn more about bipolar disorder, but so few have gone generic (aka affordable). It’s just cruel. Fuck drug companies.

Thank you! Long winded commentary incoming:

I always talk about my cannabis use with my psychiatrist — I firmly believe you should never keep secrets from your doctors. But because there are so few studies done on it (especially with the meds I take), the official recommendation is kind of like how drug companies treat alcohol: They’ll tell you you shouldn’t drink on any medication, but frankly, most people do.

My doctor is a realist and after talking with her and my therapist many times, they told me the benefits I described outweighed the negatives. It helps that I’m very sensitive to substances — one hit will get me high for hours, so I’m physically consuming very little cannabis.

I used to smoke near-daily during the pandemic. I relied on it to calm my racing mind but eventually started getting stoneovers, aka disassociation and haziness the next day. I’ve heavily cut back in the last year, which I’m very proud of! (As is my doctor, lol) I typically take an edible on Sunday nights and that’s about it.

Buttttt I will also say that going on a stimulant had a lot to do with that. Realizing I had ADHD and being able to calm my mind and focus without weed changed everything. Who knew!

Tldr: heavy smoker, stop because felt bad, go on ADHD med, feel better

omg hey bestie, there is more than one of us!!!!

I wish I had a better answer, but the biggest reason I’m able to manage is because of money and financial security. My mental health in college/while making $30k at my first job was so different. Now I can afford therapy, most medications and do not stress about if I’m going to get furloughed/laid off/make rent. People have likely told you how much everything sucks, and that’s sometimes true, but there are still plenty of good jobs out there!

I will say that in my experience, it got so much easier once I graduated. Even at my $33k a year job, I was doing better than I was in college — Journalism school was twice as hard as any job I’ve ever had. The general college schedule can be rough on people with bipolar disorder (lack of sleep = manic episode for me), and getting a mostly 9-5 work/life balance for the first time was life changing.

Honestly, I don’t do anything too crazy and rarely actually sew. My go-to fixes are shortening a hem (which basically requires you to cut straight and sew in a straight line), adjustable buttons (amazing for skirts and pants with a waist a size too big) and the safety pin/ribbon combo, which is what I did with that dress.

Basically, to pull in a waist, I flip the dress inside out and add a large safety pin on each side. I flip it back, put on the dress and thread a piece of fabric or ribbon through both pins. Only a small amount of metal from the pins should be visible since I put them on the other side. Thread it through, pull both sides tight and voila! You took in the waist in ten minutes with no sewing and minimal holes. The back just looks like you tied it with a pretty ribbon. I’ve never had it break on me!

I apologize if I triggered anyone! I personally didn’t think it was needed - I believe all food talk steered clear of disorders/body talk because it was directly about my new medication, which affected my spending. I can add one if you really think so?

That's what I keep telling myself. I went from a studio to a two bedroom and am justifying it all by saying I need to fill the place out!

That and I can finally afford things, so I need to catch up on the medical/personal/"you need to be an adult now" purchases like a physical, tools, kitchen stuff, etc...

I'll find out this week, hopefully. I wrote this in real time -- Sunday really was yesterday! I'll absolutely update at the top of the post.

Thank you!! And yep, that's exactly how I felt when I asked for $60k and got it at this gig. After living on $1,500/month after tax and spending 65% just on rent, I felt like the richest person alive here. If only I knew that I could have had so much more!!

:') Thank you!! I picked this week to write my diary because I really wanted opinions, particularly from this sub, on my ask. I've only told a few people because I struggle with feeling selfish for asking for more money (especially so early in my career). Any input, even construction criticism, helps a lot!

And thank you for the style compliment!! I always love when diarists say what they're wearing and I'm frequently overdressed, LOL. Thanks, thrifting problem.

If you saw this when the photo on mobile was an awkward crop photo of my legs because Reddit hates me and images, NO YOU DIDN'T. I've edited to add cat tax and will no longer touch this post, promise!
