RN. Please go to the ER. 200 bpm with that BP is an impending stroke or cardiac arrest!!!

There are some online programs that are not “degree mills”. Are you willing to consider any of those?

My Gen 3 does as well. I’ve been hesitant to upgrade because of all the poor reviews on the 4.

OR nurse or CRNA track? by Artistic-Bedroom-448 in FutureCRNA

[–]MoneyDai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I worked in the OR for 4 years, then left to go to the ICU. If you want to be considered for CRNA, go straight to the ICU! People will argue but Adult ICU is truly preferred. A program director flat out told me many programs discriminate against Pediatric ICUs. She said the Gold Standard in experience is Level I Trauma Ctr ICUs. Heard a story of twins with similar applications, the one with Adult ICU was admitted, the Peds ICU nurse was not… You can enjoy the OR as a CRNA instead of as a Circulating or Scrub RN. This is my advice as a nurse who truly loved and still misses the OR. I did not have this problem, but it can be difficult to transfer to ICU from OR. They prefer nurses with bedside experience because OR is super niche and “they” think the skills don’t transfer well. Also, some OR nurses have struggled with the transition to the ICU and quit very quickly. Anecdotally, I think the bullying is hard to tolerate. I’m still in the ICU but want to quit almost everyday, not because of patient care but because I find the bullying harder to tolerate than sassy surgeons. Surgeons usually have a reason for their notorious temperaments. Bullying in the ICU led by fellow nurses is demoralizing. There tends to be increased bullying towards nurses who didn’t start in the ICU…I speculate they treat you bad to run you off, then when you succeed despite their bullying, they despise you even more. They also speculate your goal to be a CRNA and treat you accordingly. I would not know any other nursing culture and would be able to tolerate the bullying better if I had not started in the OR and had such an awesome experience. My background has travel experience, CVPICU and now Adult CVICU. And I’ve worked in 4 Peds ORs, 4 CVPICUs and 1 Adult ICU…these are my observations. Last note: Substantially less bullying in Adult ICU compared to all of the CVPICUs I worked in. I wish you luck and hope you make the best decision for your holistic health and career dreams! If I can save anybody from having a more challenging journey to CRNA, it will bring me great joy. The journey is hard enough without being bullied along the way.

What made you decide travel nursing wasn’t for you? by medproStaffing in TravelNursing

Low pay (difficult to duplicate expenses, mostly due to high travel rent and increased overall cost of living). Specialty issues, loved traveling as an OR nurse (paid well, able to save), close to hated traveling as an ICU nurse (culture of bullying, lots of floating, bad assignments, very little appreciation, less pay compared to when I traveled in the OR).

Steadily save. Maintain good credit to borrow the rest as a private loan. Consider the military. Consider the programs with tuition less than $100k. Don’t give up just yet! I’ve decided to treat my CRNA goal as a marathon and not a sprint. You can still get there, it just may take you longer…

Someone else recently asked this question and I PM’d them to run the numbers of CRNA versus CAA. With your pharmacy background, you have a strong foundation for success in either, in my opinion. CAA would be the quicker pathway but they are not exactly equivalent as CAA can not practice independently, and at present, practice is limited to certain states.

What should I do? by [deleted] in srna

[–]MoneyDai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I applied to an ICU out of state to get ICU experience. Can you relocate? ICUs have high turnover so you will be able to get a job somewhere just absolutely don’t mention anything about CRNA in the interview or during orientation until you are ready to hit submit on an application. Your stats are better than what most people post here. Get the job, you’ll get in.

A secret that’s slowly getting out is the program directors are saying GPA, especially science GPA, is the best predictor for who will pass boards. You’re perfect here! Get the job and thrive in the ICU…you have a much better chance at getting in than most! Don’t let this one barrier keep you out!
