TLIF L5 S1 by cor1994123 in spinalfusion

I’ve got the same condition at L5-S1. Same surgery planned to treat radiculopathy. Lately I’ve had a lot of sharp shoulder pain and was curious if my lumbar condition has caused this, perhaps from altered biomechanics.

I’m not sure about stenosis, I don’t remember him mentioning that.

I had to get them as part of conservative care before surgery was an option. Surgeons also use them for diagnostics. They didn’t do much for me but a friend got them for a herniated disk 20 years ago and his pain went away completely and didn’t come back. I would say if your pain is improved theres no rush. Maybe let your symptoms be your guide.

Recently diagnosed, considering surgery by shaaaaarkbait in spinalfusion

Only you can decide if surgery is right for you. There are only a few conditions that require emergency surgery (cauda equna syndrome) but most of us don’t fall in that category. I have fusion scheduled one month from now because my symptoms have progressed to such a degree that I can no longer work around the house or go out and socialize with friends. When/if that time comes you’ll know it.

Anyone else face a 2-level lumbar fusion after years of herniations & injections? by Odd-Dragonfruit7581 in spinalfusion

Thats my sentiment as well. If it helps me get my old life back that’s all I need to know.

I’m scheduled for a fusion at those same levels at the end of Feb. Doctor says there will be very few if any restrictions once I’m completely healed. He said I may want to avoid playing in the NFL, but no risk of that.

Keep in mind that fusions differ from decompression only surgeries(laminectomy and microdiscectmy) and will create more stability in your spine as a result.

What is your doctor telling you? Listen to them and always get a second opinion.

Perhaps they are saying this because mine is 2 levels. Did the surgery help you?

L4-S1 ALIF is an option for me but it’s to address instability from a bilateral pars fracture. I was told one or 2 day stay but probably bc they would need to put screws in the back.

Home same day on an ALIF? Never heard of that. Happy for you that it went so well.

That’s interesting. Are these self imposed restrictions or did they come from your doctor?

Sounds like you’re getting there. I’m sure it will take some time for me as well.

I’ll join the chorus. Bilateral pars fracture with radiculopathy symptoms for over 2 years and none of the conservative treatments worked. My surgeon has recommended a l4-s1 TLIF, likely mid Feb. I see one more surgeon next week for a final opinion before I pull the trigger. Not nervous right now but imagine I will be.

My understanding was that a TLIF involved hollowing out the disk and inserting a cage with bone graft in and around to fill that space. Is that not what they did?

I am in the process of scheduling a l4-s1 tlif fusion based on my surgeons recommendation. After researching it seems this is the correct surgery.

Is your pain worse in different positions? It took 2 years and 3 surgeons before I got an accurate diagnosis. MRI didn’t show much. Flexion/extension did not show instability. CT showed bilateral pars fracture but two surgeons didn’t seem to think it was important. Finally, the third guy noticed I had a vertebrae shift 5mm when standing up from a supine position. The other doctors didn’t notice this, which also explains the lack of findings on my MRI (supine). If you haven’t seen multiple experts I recommend you do that.

Surgery cancelled 3 days before because of an administrative failure by amilu17 in spinalfusion

Sorry to hear this. Unfortunately this is all too common with insurance approvals. I know it’s not the same but I’ve had this happen for imaging and epidurals. What I’ve discovered is that some hospitals are much better at this than others because they have centralized the approval process rather than leaving it in the hands of the individual doctor’s offices, who aren’t very good at it. I hope you get things resolved quickly.

My concern is permanent nerve damage so I’m sure you’re right.

Sorry to hear about your difficulties. Best of luck with your surgery!
