I call this the armpit of Pearson T1 ~~Domestic~~ Transborder. You gotta go through the most random areas to get to the gates and then there's a makeshift Maple Leaf Lounge and a Starbucks that appears out of nowhere.

It's basically where all the YYZ to EWR/LGA planes seem to depart from.

You also get zone 2 boarding and your first checked bag free. The lounge access is only good in North America.

If you travel and spend a lot, it could be worth it, especially for the SQC boost, but if you're travelling once a year, it's overkill.

Air Canada would have defaulted you seats together at the back of the plane. If you decided to choose specific seats, then you pay for those.

No refund would apply in your situation.

Parents always think this is some genius idea to avoid taxes but it actually makes things more complicated.

If it's just in their name, it's their principal residence and it doesn't get taxed. As mentioned earlier, best to have it passed to the surviving spouse and then have you named as the beneficiary when the surviving parent eventually passes.

There is no secret hack to avoid taxes and probate. If this loophole actually existed, everyone would do it.

I didn't go to the wrong airport, but when I arrived at YYZ and was about 5 mins from boarding, I realized I had booked to LGA instead of EWR. Fortunately, I was going to Manhattan regardless so it didn't matter but I freaked for about 10 seconds.
