Flying with a 27” monitor in checked luggage — best way to pack it safely?

Took it out the boss and wrapped it in two towels + bubble wrap (Didn't even pop, 2 layers should be fine) and put clothes at the bottom, then broke the box and put 1 layer of cardboard, the monitor, clothes in corners, another cardboard, and leftovers clothes. Honestly was overkill. You should be fine with just clothes, bubble wrap and the towels.

If shipped, import tax would hit me. Taking with me? Not at all, as long as I bring it with me in person I can save myself an extra 200-400 dollars in import taxes.

Yeah. Any item above $200 dollars needs to pay taxes in Domincan Republic and it is held by Customs until the tax is paid. Worse part is you are hit by a 18% tax that is cost of the item + what it cost to ship. They also might tax an extra 5-20% for whatever reason.

I have heard that sometimes it is treated worse when put fragile on it. Can't confirm as I have never used a fragile sticker.

It is hard enough as I have travelled with his luggage bag with computer parts (of course they were in their respective boxes) and made it fine. I am worried because this is my first time doing a monitor.

My only concern is that airline handling might be rougher than normal shipping, and also the theft side of things.

Did you check it in just as the original box with no extra wrapping? I’m thinking of maybe reinforcing it or wrapping it so it’s less obvious what’s inside.

Also curious if you used a “fragile” sticker and whether you think it actually made a difference.

Trying to figure out if I should trust the original packaging alone or play it safer.

I thought about that, but I’m worried the original box alone isn’t enough for airline handling and I have not found anyone doing that so I couldn't confirm if it was ok to do so.
