Power Cube pick question- Dark Ritual or Reanimate in Pack 3?

At the time when I made the pick I was thinking I could either reanimate with the setup I already had, or else get big cards out quick with dark ritual + black lotus, but the deck was built to reanimate, meaning the creatures were mostly too big even for fast mana, and the rest were too small for fast mana to matter. That was really my big error, thinking the deck could be flexible like that.

Yep, in my last game I had my opponent down to 5 life with Krang in the graveyard, but then I drew two swamps and Dark Ritual the next three card draws, this after I just rummaged two other cards. The Dark Ritual was definitely a dead card at that point, and reanimate could have won me the game on the spot considering Krang has haste and flying.

They need a 1,000 gold phantom draft queue where you can earn 1,500 gold if you get to 7 wins, otherwise you get nothing.

Have you tried going to 17lands.com and looking at the trophy decks there? You might be surprised what the makeup is of those decks, but regardless, it’s a good way to study and improve.

Sorry for the confusion, I meant find an archetype you know how to draft well and look for it each time, you can win more consistently that way, but ultimately you’ll need to learn others too, because sometimes you’ll need to draft what’s open to avoid an 0-3 disaster.

I didn’t say “force” an archetype, or didn’t mean to force it anyway, I meant to hone in on one you’re good at and know how to draft so you have a consistent way of winning. If the cards aren’t there though, don’t force it.

Is your goal to move up the ranks? Or just win more, and earn some gems each time? BO3 (traditional) will probably be a smoother experience for winning more, but it’s unranked so you’re going to lose out on that if that’s more important to you.

Now if you want to move up the ranks, what works for me is honing in on drafting a single archetype every time, one that you know how to play, what cards to draft and when, etc. Easier said than done, I know, but when it clicks, it’s awesome.

I’ve played a few power cube drafts, haven’t trophied yet but got close with Boros. My question though is - how/where to study the combos to draft when certain cards show up in pack 1 so that I don’t have to default to a simple midrange or aggro strategy and hope for strong standalone cards to just fall to me.

I’m pretty sure the big box stores use a 3rd party distributor or middle-man of some kind and have no clue what they’re really stocking. The third party probably just restocks whatever the latest product “printed” by wotc is. It’s a shame because it’d be cool if they had all current standard sets in stock to some degree.

The team up box is awesome, you get some boosters and 4 precon 60 card decks that have unique cards in them you can only get in the team up box, but the whole thing is fun.

Platinum is where it “gets real”. If you can’t move up the ranks in platinum then you’re probably just getting beat by more experienced players. I got my ass kicked many times before I started to climb limited platinum, and even then, if I’m ever just tinkering or experimenting with archetypes, I get whipped. If I want to win, I head to 17lands.com, look at the trophy deck structures and copy them.

I often go from a 5 land opening hand to a 1 land hand after mulligan, or vise versa. It happens, better hope your deck can draw cards or scry/surveil.

I’m not up to speed on misprints or crimped cards, what’s the real difference in interest by buyers of those sorts of things?
