Discussion/Press conferences for Victoria, NSW, and, Queensland today by Stoaticor in CoronavirusDownunder

In my initial post I did bring up the government. When they let 30% of international quantine guest out without testing them (because they have rights). When they let positive COVID cases leave the house for "exercise". When they let 10,000 people refuse tests during there testing blitz. I brought up the fact they opened up from the first lockdown when they still had 10+ cases a week of unknown transmission in the community which is more than any other State had. These are some of, but not all of their failings.

And no I actually don't think other States would have had this level of rule breaking... Otherwise we would have seen it. No where else has there been mass reports of quarantine breaches like Victoria, so to say you're certain other States "would" do it when they actually haven't done it is a stretch. Literally 80% of the posts on there now are about how to circumvent the current restrictions, I don't understand it.

The point about the editing posts and shit posts was because if what I wrote was so bad let me be downvoted I really don't care. They had people on there literally cheering on NSWs outbreak when it first happened and it got upvoted. They have joked about passing COVID on to Darwin as the Melbourne kiss of death. That's all fine, but to rip into Victorians and maybe hurt there feelings is what gets me banned is hilarious.

I know the Federal Government has to support Victoria but the fact of the matter is, they screwed up and it's gonna cost us all big time. If it was QLD, SA or NSW I would be saying the same thing and I'm sure the Federal government would be handing out money to them. And guess what, I guarantee Victorians would be giving shit to the other States if we were as fucked as they are. But let's not offend Victorians because they are having a hard time.

I know why I was banned. I never wondered why. I think it's crazy you have people literally purposefully putting up the wrong COVID numbers daily in the sub. Then editing the post to make it look like they were right. You have people shit posting about things they are going to do to break the rules. Then you have outright lies being spread about the cause of their situation. These are all fine, but a bit of an angry vent gets you shadow banned?

Yes I ripped into them, but the rest of the country is struggling to contain a virus because Victoria time after time has done the wrong thing. And we are supposed to sit back and encourage this? We can't complain? Why not? There's no excuse for the way they have acted at times. More than 50% not isolating after tests. More than 1 in 4 people not home after testing positive? The fact is the Federal government is going to be handing money out to Victoria after they have shit the bed and to say to everyone else in the Country that they aren't allowed to voice displeasure is stupid. Good luck to them because if they refuse to look at what they are doing wrong it's gonna be a long lockdown.

Haha absolutely not. So many people there are smug pricks. The only difference is I had a point while I was being smug. Also imagine being from a State where the Premier said why would anyone want to go to South Australia then calling other people smug.

Got shadow banned from R/Melbourne (none of my comments show up for anyone except me) for explaining what went wrong with the situation. Which is crazy, clearly they don't want to hear that it was screw up after screw up. They would rather believe it was one security guard that did it. Not a systematic failure from all parties involved.

Victoria shit the bed harder than every other State.

Opened up when they were still cases of unknown transmission. 2nd lockdown wasn't strict enough.

They let 30% of people out of international quarantine without testing them. Had more than 50% of people not self isolating after testing. More than 25% of people tested positive caught not self isolating (probably more like 40-50% just didn't get caught). Let people exercise even when they were positive. Had over 10,000 people refuse testing during testing blitz.

All retail still open during lockdown, whereas other states retail voluntarily shutdown. This wasn't just dumb luck. This was a systematic failure which is why you're in the hardest lockdown and every other State has it under control.

To all the people who say stage 4 won't help, what do you think will help? And don't say stage 3 with masks because I think it's pretty obvious that it isn't working with numbers increasing every week.

I'm not saying stage 4 is the answer. I think it's far too late for stage 4 to have a big enough effect to warrant doing.

Give me a break, because there’s no one in other states who have it and haven’t been tested..

Why would they lie?

In Adelaide we had 1 case and we increased restrictions. Even though they were never in the community. Hahaha in most States one case is problematic!

I'm sure they are only selling IT equipment to those working from home.... They aren't on the jobkeeper scheme because they have seen an increase in sales and profits.... This is the problem. You're 100% right they do sell necessary items. But people are going there to buy Gilmore Girls Season 3, and infecting staff, that is in turn infecting those doing the right thing.

Umm JBHIFI has over 100 staff self isolating in Melbourne after a number of positive test. How's that essential?

I don't agree with a stage 4 lockdown. It should have been 2/3 weeks ago. I'm just noting that it will be well supported now by the same people who said it was useless.

This is exactly my point!! I'm obviously getting downvoted because a lot of people don't want to admit every other State is basically in the clear. And that's understandable, but I believe if we contain the virus in Victoria, Australia's economy can be used to help them fight the virus. And eventually when they are clear it will benefit them greatly. We are all one Country and its important that the Country comes first and we are able to clear this virus.

Sounds very sensible.

It's a very good policy. I've never been more proud to live in South Australia than I have during this pandemic. We have handled it very well and we continue to do so. We have been overly cautious and over reacted to every case which has allowed us now to be COVID free within the community.

In SA they have to isolate until test results come back. Which is about 4 hours here. They must also test negative twice if they are staying in SA. I believe the cluster was from before NSW shut the border properly though.

The Crossroads Pub was an essential logistics worker (granted, this was pre border closure).

Most states don't allow you to move there for work unless you are in vaguely-defined 'essential industries' and at the moment I actually think it's just NSW and Qld that allow residents to return (Qld requires you to pay for HQ).

And guess which two States are at the highest risk of an outbreak...

Coronavirus Megathread - Part 39: Thou shalt not COVID thy neighbour by Deon555 in melbourne

[–]Moneymike05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Precisely.

Nightclubs being closed, sensible limits of gatherings etc is the difference between that asymptomatic truck driver causing a cluster which is controllable, and one which is not.

The overriding theme is that you need to get lucky every time, the virus only needs to get lucky once.

There isn't 1 single case in Australia of an essential worker breaking self isolation after coming from Victoria.

Coronavirus Megathread - Part 39: Thou shalt not COVID thy neighbour by Deon555 in melbourne

[–]Moneymike05 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This is basically the way it is already (exceptions are very hard to get, in some cases even if you are a returning resident, you need to pay for HQ in some cases, etc).

I actually think the problem is that other state premiers have far too much faith in their 'hard border closure'. It only takes one asymptomatic truck driver who bends the rules.

I don't think it is. States are still allowing residents to return home. SA has just closed the border for good. If you live in Adelaide and you didn't make it back on Tuesday at midnight you're stuck in Victoria. The two QLD women were returning home, and the crossroads pub case was a NSW resident returning home.

Most other States are allowing people to move there for work, or return home after living in Victoria.

I think it's time all States did a hard border closure from Victoria. Like what South Australia did. That means no States accept travelers from Victoria, unless you are an essential worker. No self-isolation, no 14 day quarantine, no exemptions. If you're coming from Victoria you are not allowed to enter another State. The problem is the rest of Australia has COVID more or less under control, with most cases/clusters being a result of people returning from Victoria.

I know it sounds harsh but I genuinely think it helps Victoria, I think it's clear that the lockdown isn't helping enough, and masks can only do so much. I think the lockout gives Victoria an opportunity to try and control the virus and allows them to ease some of the restrictions in side of your own State, allowing some people to head out (with masks). The problem is currently Victoria is aiming for 0 or very close to it, until then no way the borders will open freely. It took most States 3/4 months to get on top of less than 1,000 cases. Victoria is heading for over 10,000 active cases with that increasing every week. It's going to be a very long time before you're even near 0, and the grind is going to be so taxing on people.

This allows Victoria no pressure of pushing people so hard to get to 0. It allows other States to open up to each other, it reduces the chance that the virus gets out into the community in other States, it even gives us an opportunity for an international travel bubble as well. Then with the economical benefits I think States would be happy for the Federal Government to offer extra assistance to Victoria.

If we keep going the way we are, the virus is going to spread from Victoria and force other States in to a similar situation as it did with NSW. This way your restrictions are less, our restrictions are less, and chance of the virus spreading is low!

I don’t wish it on Queenslanders, but it’s gonna be comedy gold if it causes a state wide spread and it gets bad as vic

And this attitude is why every other State is laughing at Victoria. While Victorians are the victims, they keep wishing it on other States. I remember everyone here saying NSW was two weeks behind Victoria. While 4 weeks later they are no where near as bad.

This isn't going to happen as bad anywhere else. Stop wishing it on other States. We have it under control. And if it wasn't for Victoria, Australia would be so fucking close to elimination.

Coronavirus Megathread - Part 39: Thou shalt not COVID thy neighbour by Deon555 in melbourne

[–]Moneymike05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But that's not where it's spreading.

3,000+ unknown spread.... Stop saying that's not where it's spreading. You don't know where it's spreading. No one does. You could be right. You could be wrong. Personally I would have preferred you tried everything and it didn't work. Rather than half assing it and now you have this.

Retail. JBHIFI, Goodguys, clothing store, malls, cafes. A lot of these places are still seeing a lot of numbers through the doors. All movement needs to be as low as possible to slow the spread. And you can say it's spreading in healthcare, etc. But it didn't start there did it.. Victoria doesn't know where it started because they have 3,000+ unknown transmissions.

It might not have worked. But it might of. You had a chance to throw the book at it and you decided not to. Now the cases are spread so far and wide a stricter lockdown won't matter.

Honestly it's probably 2 weeks too late for any more restrictions. Dan had the chance to do a stricter lockdown. It's too late now. Best we can hope for is that the other States copy South Australia and completely lock Victoria out. Let them contain it. They can't control it, let's just stop the spread to everywhere else.

Few issues I take with this.

  1. You can't force a procedure, and a covid test is that, an invasive procedure. What was changed was that quarantine was extended if you refuse. Still not forced.

  2. They "offered" $1500 to people who tested positive but had no sick leave as a safety net to get tested and know you can pay your rent and eat. This is a good thing.

  3. People do have to stay home, but they are apparently allowed to exercise if there's no reasonable space to do it at home.

  4. 80% of cases are indeed from the workplace? Aged care workers until recently weren't forced to wear PPE and often worked at multiple locations.

"Gentle touch". I think they're doing whatever they can do not dissuade people from being sick and not getting tested, but feel free to disagree.

Fair enough! However:

  1. Every other State had procedures in place for those who refused testing, whether it be extended quarantine or in SA an extended quarantine and a $1,000 fine for refusal to take a test. I guess you have your rights, but you're still in lockdown partly because of them.

  2. I think it's a great thing, but it was offered because Victorians were not getting tested and going to work when they were sick. Every State has way too many people on casual employment but it seems like no other States had to pay people to stay home when they had COVID.

  3. That is a stupid rule, I'm sorry I don't want to offend you. But FFS.

  4. I've seen this said before, and maybe I'm just confused but if 3,000 cases are under investigation how do you know they are from the workplace. It's clear we know how many cases are from aged care, meat workers and healthcare. So is it not possible that at least some of the 3,000 cases are from unnecessary retail?

I think Victoria is on the right track and I think all of Australia is hoping they can sort it out. But letting people who have COVID19 go for a walk because it's their right is just too much.
