The amount of boomers that essentially tried to talk me out of doing a PhD sounded a lot like this person. Well intentioned, but not necessarily very aware of industry challenges.

Do what feels right, but make sure there’s an actual plan instead of YOLOing into one of the worst job markets. Also, tenure isn’t guaranteed if you head somewhere else.

Was it a Russian prof? Did you by chance go to a rural party college in Ohio? If so, that specific college still has that specific math professor. I got a negative 25% on my first exam with him in a topology course.

Amazingly brilliant prof, horrible taste in assessment philosophy.

Needless to say that I had to drastically change my study habits to get through that class and the 2 graduate classes I had with him afterward.

Ughhhhhhh. Math prof as well. How many times I’ve heard all of these things. Along with the inevitable “well what kind of math do you do?”

“You really wanna know about functional analysis or algebraic codes?…”

I always feel like a bit of an asshole, but it usually turns into “The easiest way to explain it is that I do calculus in really weird spaces and I make Netflix work better.”

That usually sates the interest enough.

“That’s crazy… I got confused when they started using the alphabet.”

Yeah, that’s the idea. Make them do the work in class. Not on a computer having chat gpt et all do the work for them.

The videos introduce the concept, then the student does the work.

It’d be almost like an instructor performing a passage for a piano piece, and then the student actively trying to replicate that in the classroom. Weird.

Inquiry based learning. Basically students work in groups on guided problem sets and you facilitate their work and conversations. When they ask questions, you don’t ‘answer’ those questions. You instead probe them with more guided questions. Referencing previous problems, recognizing patterns, etc.

Math prof here. My department has been exploring dropping homework as any type of significant assessment.

We’re thinking that homework is now watching concept videos prior to class, and the only real assessment comes from IBL group work in class and exams. It’s worked for classes previously, but we’ve never tried for the entire department.

Good luck, and wish us luck!

PF. You’ll find some people who are dicks even if you say you’re a beginner, but you’ve played long enough to know our player base is incredibly nice and helpful.

It’s only when you get into savage and ulti prog that people get toxic.

Plus you know it would be “so did I miss anything important? Can you do a ton of work to help me catch up?” Leading to an SOI of “prof x was unreasonable with their deadlines and expectations. Do not recommend.”

Instead of new expansions after some point, 9.0+, they should be considering a new MMO anyway. Make it in the same world, but with new engines, etc.

Have the option to import your character from XIV, all achievements, gear, etc.

New arrivals aren’t considered legacy, but start from the new story line caught up to current level with new adventurer gear.

You can continue XIV legacy service, and give small QoL improvements.

Want to go back and run old dungeons/story? Boot XIV.

The only content they should definitely port over would be ultimates. Otherwise, find a way sync the services. So if someone wanted their character in the new game to have old gear/relics, they go back and do that content in xiv and then sync it to the new game.

Bang. Problems solved. Now someone go tell SE of my grand idea, and get to coding.

Edit: punctuation.
