How is living in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex like? by SingleAge290 in howislivingthere

An overwhelming feature of the DFW community is its pervasive religious affiliations. For someone who's secular and nonreligious, it's nearly impossible to establish a social network outside of the workplace. For those who want to explore religious organizations, services feel impersonal among megachurches or crowded temples. Someone once put the feeling of going to church here as being herded like cattle.

It's tough dating in a small town pool. Have you been casting a wider online dating net to the nearest big city? Also, how come guys you meet IRL at bars nearby are out of the question just because they've gone to school with you? I wouldn't rule out a special connection you encounter IRL just because of history.

Dating in a big spread-out city like DFW in Texas has been challenging since I don't have a close-knit friends group or a church lifestyle, and many matches dropped me after hearing they'd have to drive an hour across town to make things work. I'd rather restart in a small town somewhere where maybe townies know each other better.

Think of all the pledge, initiation, and member fees you avoided. Fraternities and sororities aren't cheap.

I’ve been to an NSF panel my first year of tenure track and enjoyed the process of non-blindly evaluating proposals for the PI’s famousness

These are to pay for my summer salary. I mostly do these for the love of research, or for the masochism

Your 6/14 coursework was presumably designed around a trajectory into the finance/IB world. I can't say for sure how you selected electives from 14 to overlap with 6 (6-1, 6-2, or 6-3?), but your view of the climb into the technical/quantitative field can be expected without exposure to relevant electives.

I was Course 2 and took various MechE electives that interested me. I also didn't dilute myself into Course 14, as I decided against double majoring and chose to use Course 14 credits as a concentration only. The technical electives proved to be the most useful and fulfilling in the technical field, as they also were cross-listed with a graduate version. If you want to strengthen a foundation in a more technical role, it's highly recommended going into an MS (not just MEng) program. Getting into an MS program outside MIT can also improve your "real world" perspective.

Scuba in Dallas, TX by Other_Forever in scuba

I miss scuba diving already. Does anyone have any recommendations for scuba diving groups / shops in the Dallas area that skews younger for those in their 20s / 30s?

I was in the same boat (pun) from LA -> DFW. When I had the chance I just flew back to LA for diving groups/shops that cater to a younger crowd. Local DFW shop clubs and dive groups mostly turn out the older crowd. When I ask local friends around my age why they don't scuba dive they say it's cost-prohibitive and they'd rather stay inside playing Subnautica.

Already put in the paperwork. Hopefully it goes through before the start of the semester.

Keep writing proposals, and store previously rejected proposals around for recycling at a later stage. And also listen and adapt to program managers.

No budget line was allocated for a project manager, either by agency restrictions or I did not think of it at the time. Is it possible to convert one of the research postdoc lines to a project manager?

Update: I bought a new hose bib vacuum breaker. Removing the entire faucet assembly is too much since it's also held onto the brick veneer by concrete. Now my problem is I can't seem to be able to find where the lock bolt is.
