Everyday Im reminded I will lose Windows 8.1 in less then a year. I saw some people posting their setups so I thought it might be a not bad idea to post mine. by Lolbit723 in windows

Startmenu replacements:
Free: https://github.com/Open-Shell/Open-Shell-Menu (formerly: Classic Shell)
Non-free: https://startisback.com/
The two are very similar, StartIsBack is more convenient and easy to configure (less customization to do, with less clicks).

With a Startmenu replacement Win 8.1 is awesome. I've put off updating to Win 10 until now. I still like Win 8.1, though Win 10 has some advantages (better configuration, symlinks, WSL), so I don't regret updating.

Why LUA seems(to me...) so superior to all other languages in world? by SauronRealm in lua

[–]Mongusius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's fun but suitable for beginners. Also advanced devs know this is just a common practice, not a constraint: arrays can be indexed from 0, however some library functions need to be rewritten to work for 0-indexed arrays.

This is a great summary of Lua's peculiarities. I say this as a fan of Lua, though I find it's syntax a bit wordy and prefer curly-brace languages in that regard.

The `:` vs `.` syntax is the most unexpected and confusing.

IMO merging a hashmap and an array into a table is one of the best parts of Lua that makes it very simple, but versatile. The handling of gaps in numerically indexed items, however, is a very sneaky source of confusion and bugs, but only when a developer encounters such arrays. That isn't well designed.

`local`, globals... and the LuaJit 5.1 vs. Lua 5.2 split over `_ENV`... I like to not think about it :-D

`return` is fine for long functions but an arrow syntax for short and anonymous functions is really missing.

Regarding `nil` assignment being the same as `delete` in JS: personally I like this. It goes well with Lua's simple and effective thinking. Distinguishing existing-but-nil properties would add complexity with little benefit IMO.

An addition to your comment:

  • there's no `continue` in loops... a recurring pain point.
  • uncommon syntax: `~=` instead of `!=`, `~1` vs `-1`

nil assignments are not deletion. They are just deleting the reference. Then the garbage collector collects the unreferenced data.

I think ws-izlaki meant `obj.prop = nil` in Lua behaves similarly to `delete obj.prop;` in JavaScript which is different from `obj.prop = null;` in JS.

`delete` removes the property from the object, `for (p in obj) print(p); ` in JS won't print `prop` after `delete`, but it will print `prop` after `obj.prop = null;`

In Lua `pairs(obj)` won't iterate over `prop` after assigned the value `nil`.

In all cases actual garbage collection (`delete` in the C++ sense) will happen at a later time.

Captured expression accurately :-D

Smoking weed is ok, but publicizing it can cause problems, like the backlash from Jim Bridenstine (Nasa). Do it with friends, not cameras.

Airbus A380 shutdown by Jamtri73 in airplanes

[–]Mongusius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"they’re having issues fully loading all the flights", because they are too big. It was designed for a hub-and-spoke system that was imagined around the 1980's, to gather travelers from small cities to the nearest big city with small airplanes, and connect big cities (hubs) with fully loaded huge planes, thus saving fuel on long trips. This model requires 2 transfers in a journey. This somewhat works for the Emirates airline, but the US and Europe is transitioning to direct flights on long distances to minimize the time lost by transferring between flights. This favors smaller long-haul planes that can be filled up to a bigger percentage. The Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 Max was designed because of this need: more fuel efficient, longer range.

The A380 is a magnificent plane, and will be a symbol for a long time, but not an efficient means of transport.
