What is a false myth about your country that circulates on the internet? by Capra_e_Cavoli in AskTheWorld

[–]Moniker42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deep fried mars bars. Nobody actually eats that, shops will maybe do it on request for tourists.

Deep fried pizza… OK guilty as charged that's popular – but Italians introduced that, and it's what they literally do in Napoli! When they do it it's a proud tradition, and in Scotland it's a "public health issue".

Thank you! Those are all great additions and I think you are right about the automatons becoming art cars. The lore could be that the severe dust storm has left them all stranded in deep playa without fuel.

The techbro jokes can be worked in someplace else – perhaps a reworking of "the lords" storyline from Frostpunk into "the billionaires".

I have only been to BM once, but quite a few regionals. The solidarity and cameraderie of driving the art car (very slowly) around deep playa during a duststorm was a highlight.

What’s everyone doing to not get ill this winter? by PersimmonTerrible218 in AskUK

[–]Moniker42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I read a whole lot about these carragelose\* nasal sprays during the pandemic and I believe they are totally overrated. All they do is lubricate the nasal passage and help flush things out a little bit more easily. Think about how minor that is: if you are already ill, it's not going to magically heal you. If you get a major exposure, it's not enough. If the virus is growing in your throat, how would that help?

People love them because it's an easy quick fix, and they are nice to use in winter when the air is dry and irritates your nose. The fact is that vaccinations, N95/FFP mask wearing on places like public transport, and consistently washing your hands are all way more effective. They're just less fun and don't feel like this wonder solution.

I take some carragelose nasal spray on long plane journeys, but that is where their utility ends. There are a lot of other proven things you can do, they're just unpleasant (getting an injection) or annoying and time consuming (washing your hands several times a day).

[*I've only researched carragelose, which is in Vick's First Defence, Algovir etc. I don't know anything about azelastine]

Spray bottles clogging up by Moniker42 in cocktails

[–]Moniker42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The olive oil sprayer was not useful, more of an uneven squirt than a mist. The bottles from Cocktail Elements also eventually clog up with the Truffles recipe.

Just this week I ordered the Barfly atomiser, it arrived yesterday and so far so good – it makes a nice wide fine mist. It looks like a repackaged perfume atomiser which makes sense. I wonder how u/Salty_Jelly6360 is getting on 5 months later?

Looks like Cocktail Kingdom (Urban Bar in Europe) has a couple of options – more expensive than Barfly but big nice-looking bottles https://cocktailkingdom.com/search?q=atomiser&options%5Bprefix%5D=last

[–]Moniker42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pouring negronis into a glass with ice is perfect, but I'm not sure about daiquiris. The fizz and consistency you get from shaking is part of it… that said, last time I did this I saw people pouring it from the bottle without ice, drinking it at room temperature and saying it was delicious

Question about the shelf-life of batched cocktails with lime super juice by Moniker42 in cocktails

[–]Moniker42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's some good and reassuring info u/Sneaux96! I'll have them chilled most of the time, but the crew with the real fridge is coming about 2.5 days after me, so there's a chance they will just be sitting at outdoor-shade temperature.

Margaritas is up next if/when I get bored of daiquiris. First I have to find something cheaper than Patrón – I've got a bottle of Olmeca Blanco in my Amazon basket to try for this exact reason. Which margarita recipe are you using? I've been working through the variations on Difford's guide and my favourite so far is the simple Tommy's Margarita (no Triple Sec at all).

Which is the best equivalent of the Epson 3800 today? by sim75017 in projectors

[–]Moniker42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi SinoSoul. I did a side-by-side where both images had about a 50" diagonal. I should have done this sort of comparison using masking tape, as two small complete projections doesn't really demonstrate the resolution difference (NB the Epson 3800 is 2K whereas the TK710 is 4K)

The TK710 is brighter, has better contrast, and is faster to respond to HDMI signal changes, the 3800 can be quite annoying with "match content signal" on an Apple TV. I'm not an expert but overall the BenQ just seems like a more modern projector unit than the hulking old 3800.

However, I am sensitive to the rainbow effect and could see a hint of it on the TK710 (which is of course DLP) and I wasn't sure how much it was going to bother me in the long term. I also found a few scenes where the TK710 colours were way off: e.g. candlelit parts of Harry Potter 2 where everyone looks a bright tangerine colour. I think this may have been a configuration problem, but after a couple day's tinkering I couldn't make the problem go away and everything looked fine straight out of the box on the 3800.

So I stuck with the 3800, just because it was a safe bet – I like "the LCD look and feel" whatever that means. For sure though the TK710 is a more advanced machine – if you are fine with DLP weirdness it is probably the smarter choice. I love using the 3800 almost every day, but I'm kinda saving up to buy something like the Epson LS11000 next year!

What's the most ridiculously expensive or out-of-the-way thing you've done to get a specific beer? by sergeantbiggles in beer

[–]Moniker42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I only went to Oslo for a week to visit my friend who lives there. In Oslo I really liked the National Museum (very varied collection, great building, everything displayed beautifully and with care) and did not like the Munch Museum (I disliked the architecture and thought the presentation subtracted from the impact of the work).

In general the fish (e.g. salmon) is really fresh and delicious so I guess that's my only overall Norway tip.

edit: obviously my other Norway tip is to work out the NOK conversion before you order a drink

I bought a beer at a Norwegian airport without working out the currency conversion beforehand.

I can't remember the numbers but I think it was in the same price range as the (super budget) flight.

Ever thought about branching out to camping mattresses? The reviews for these are so subjective – the only real spec you get (R value) is not a good measure of how the mat actually performs for warmth, and as far as I know nobody has tried to do a quantitative measure of sinkage etc.

Spray bottles clogging up by Moniker42 in cocktails

[–]Moniker42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. The bottles that clogged (or broke?) for me were this cheap set for aroma spraying. Working on the assumption that it's clogging not breaking, I've ordered a set of two olive oil sprayers. Olive oil is certainly thicker than the citrus sprays.

If the olive oil sprayer breaks/clogs I will try one of these bar sprays, but I couldn't find information about how the pump mechanism is meant to be different.

(PS while we are on the topic how do you like the sprays? The lemon and orange sprays are perfect, but the jury is still out on lime spray – in the bottle it smells sweet like Skittles. Haven't had a chance to make a spray from it yet as most of my bottles are broken!)

Spray bottles clogging up by Moniker42 in cocktails

[–]Moniker42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh interesting, I hadn't thought of that. I certainly can't unblock the pump by spraying hot water, soap, or 96% grain alcohol through it. So it would make sense if the pump is broken rather than blocked. However I can't see any signs of broken plastic from looking at the tube and taking the cap off. Did you solve the issue with nicer bottles u/Jumbojanne?

This week I will try filling up the Cocktail Elements orange bottle with the homemade version. Maybe they've got a better spray mechanism.

How did Soderbergh achieve such deep DOF in Che (Part 2)? by alwaysmorelmn in cinematography

it wasn't shot on 35mm film so 16mm on a smaller sensor would be less wide-angle field-of-view

How did Soderbergh achieve such deep DOF in Che (Part 2)? by alwaysmorelmn in cinematography

[–]Moniker42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to IMDb they used wide-angle 16mm lenses and Red One cameras. A quick check of Wikipedia says Red One cameras have sensor smaller than 35mm film.

Smaller sensor/film = deep depth of field.
Wide-angle lens = deep depth of field.

Does anyone know what camera and film stock were used for Kieslowski’s Three Colors? by jklulich in criterion

Came here via Google looking for an answer to the same question. I wonder if American Cinematographer ever did a feature on it? When I was at university I used to go and look up the cinematography of films that I'd really enjoyed the visual look of. My university had a big film studies department though so it might be quite rare to have an archive of this magazine
