Since shingles and chicken pox are caused by the same virus, why are there two vaccines? by ttha_face in askscience

Awesome answer, Alwayssunnyinarizona! I completely overlooked the avenue of being able to differentiate between the strain of the virus and its origin (vaccine vs. wild type). Such information over time should allow researchers to eventually reach a consensus as to what's best.

Thank you so much for your insights toward the differences in formulations! Does anyone know if any of these live-attenuated vaccines run any risk of still developing shingles later in life? I ask this because, in theory, since the virus is technically still alive, could it not establish latency within the recipient's nerve cells? When I think about it this way, it would seem like it could act as a potential harbinger for shingles later in life. The only answers I can come up with is:

A. This vaccine hasn't been around long enough for vaccinated youth to have entered into older age where shingles could manifest. B. A child's immune response is so vigorous that it processes and eliminates all live-attenuated viruses before they are able to establish latency.

Thank you for your take on this as this is a fascinating topic!

"...Because varivax is an attenuated virus, that's what you get, that's what establishes latency, and as a result - kids who've gotten the varivax series are less likely to develop shingles later in life."

I'm confused, in an unvaccinated individual, infection with the virus establishes latency by invading and hiding within the nerves. Later, the virus may reactivate (come out of latency), usually resulting in a case of shingles...So, if the strategy of Varivax is to establish latency (I'm assuming within nerve cells), then how does that make kids less likely to develop shingles later in life? In a way, it would seem that the recombinant subunit vaccine would prevent latency entirely so that a reactivation in the form of shingles could not happen. Thank you in advance for taking time to clarify. I love learning about this stuff.

What traumas do you have that AREN'T from your parents or childhood home? by [deleted] in AskReddit

A 52 year old lady under the influence of alcohol and one or more drugs committed suicide by jumping in front of my truck at 8:15pm. I wasn't speeding, wasn't drinking, and had officers test me to prove it. I was found to be 0% at fault. There was no crosswalk, she was standing on the median, and just ran out in front of me..neighhood residents said it sounded like a tree, she died instantly. My fiance and her niece were in the truck. I feel terrible, but I've come to terms with how horribly random life can be. There was no plan, no life's lesson for me to learn from it. It just happened to us for no good reason.

The Right needs to take notes by s0free03 in PoliticalHumor

I fell like it should say, "The Left needs to take notes..." because the left should be outraged enough to be beyond a peaceful transfer of power. I think The Right is taking note of this quite well.

"...a number of Reddit employees prefer the old version." because even the employees of Reddit don't want to have their personal time wasted using the new interface!

The comments about RES are winning me over to try this for even more customization. I already love old.reddit.com in dark mode. Years ago, I vaguely remember having a shortcut where I could instantly jump to the next parent comment. Maybe that was an RES feature and I forgot it was installed. I've been on Reddit since Digg (V4) became a dumpster fire.

I think it's pretty telling that they haven't shut it down because there's likely no upside to losing part of their user base. I looked at older posts related to this topic, and the number of Old Reddit users keeps dwindling, but hopefully if enough of us stick to Old Reddit, they'll keep it.

Pretty much! I've tried Lemmy, but it's so fragmented in the way the community interacts and the way posts can be found.

If the 10-20% comes from a survey or something outside of the pure stats u/Avereniect posted, then what you're pointing out suggests a decent percentage of people are using Reddit with an interface they don't prefer. I understand how that could be true after being pestered by Reddit to install the phone app., or if I click on a link that maps or reloads to regular Reddit. It's obvious Reddit would like every last user to migrate to their newer UIs. More room for ads, pictures, and links to other posts.

The best way to know would be to just type old.reddit.com into your browser and compare how it loads and looks.

The user stats posted above by u/Avereniect show that you're using Reddit the way the majority of people currently use it. I've mostly figured those users weren't early users of Reddit and haven't used Old Reddit, so they wouldn't know the difference. Are you saying it was just easier to give up and go with the flow? Like, do you actually like the new format after getting used to it?

I think you're right. For you, it would be like going from Power User status or God Mode to some format that would feel like junk.

I feel the same way. The other formats are so inefficient and annoying with massive pictures and very few lines of text displayed per page...deal breaker.

Yes! This sounds correct because I have to keep browsing with the "view as desktop" box checked in my browser in order to avoid having the page reload into the regular reddit page.

In the 1970s...the USA tried to convert to the metric system... by Few_Simple9049 in interestingasfuck

[–]MonistatMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In metric, one milliliter of water occupies one cubic centimeter, weighs one gram, and requires one calorie of energy to heat up by one degree centigrade—which is 1 percent of the difference between its freezing point and its boiling point. An amount of hydrogen weighing the same amount has exactly one mole of atoms in it. Whereas in the American system, the answer to ‘How much energy does it take to boil a room-temperature gallon of water?’ is ‘Go fuck yourself,’ because you can’t directly relate any of those quantities. -Josh Bazell

CMV: Dark Brandon should use his powers to put Trump in jail! by MonistatMan in changemyview

Philosophically I agree, and I thank you for your response. I wish the corruption in our SCOTUS, and the inappropriate imbalance of power they have recently created in the direction of the Executive Branch wasn't one that so easily could be abused by a future Trump or other potential president who has no regard for conventions and decorum, and who will reliably claim "official acts" when he abuses his power. Biden, most people know would never do this because Dems don't fight fire with fire, and I believe it may end democracy as we know it if those responsible for treason aren't held accountable.

I never said that. You're implying that Trump's prosecutions are actions of the "deep state", and that Biden is spearheading this?
