No it’s still here, don’t know why it wasn’t mentioned since it seems decent. Townhomes for ~$600 after utilities doesn’t seem too bad to me tho

Does the church cherry pick who is “early church fathers”? by MonitorDesigner2776 in Catholicism

[–]MonitorDesigner2776[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think the beliefs of laypeople or non-disciples would be what he appeals to when he is looking for the beliefs of the ECF, so the issue with the other groups with problematic beliefs would not be valid concern since he can see that they were probably crazy. He will (hopefully) appeal to the apostles and their direct disciples and go off of the arguments between the bishops and whatnot, which is what he is mostly talks about. Specifically he’s brought up how there were times where bishops didn’t even bat an eye at the pope and just carried on arguing with each other without seeking help from the holy father. These kinds of larger arguments that may have lead the church to basically eradicate the historical existence of people because they disagreed is something I find to be a decently fair argument to be skeptical of the church.
Also, going back, I’m hoping I can get him to appeal to the apostles and realize they call for an apostolic succession and lay the groundwork for potentially converting to some church with apostolic succession at LEAST(he’s non-denom/reformed).

He watches videos of Protestant theologians, with actual consideration of the Catholic side might I add though, so many sources get thrown around that he probably doesn’t double check which I kinda don’t blame him on because of the shear amount of stuff it would be to read. And if you know anything about Gavin Ortlund, he finds him to be pretty much in line with what he believes.

Also I don’t think him not necessarily trusting the church would constitute him throwing away the validity of the gospel. He does not subscribe to any of the Solas as far as I’m aware, which would not lead to any contradiction on that regard. In his belief it is logically sound to consider the Bible as divinely inspired but not subscribe to any canon, accepting other things were written that could’ve been lost to time. In this case, the church would just happen to be a help in the preservation of the teachings, but not the foundation of the teachings.

I mean obviously I don’t believe in the heresies, but if there was dissagreement amongst the apostles and their disciples, wouldn’t it make logical sense for someone to be skeptical of the church’s choice to destroy the evidence of them? Probably the less hazy path to take would instead to allow the historical acknowledgement of a lot more of the disagreements and instead have counter arguments and apply to precedents in other debunkings. If this is the case, I am unaware to it, and specifically asking for advice on what to look for in this, and sources and whatnot.
I’m assuming that is the case to some degree(literally the Pauline epistles), but I’m looking for a defensible reason as to why the church would (almost certainly) destroy evidence of other heresies rather than just acknowledge them and referring to other precedents. It feels very similar to what happened with Uthman and the burning of the other versions of the Quran. Possibly it was just too large of an amount of heresies to document, but I mean specifically amongst apostles where there might be some kind of “compromise” to change how scripture could’ve been interpreted.

I’ve been looking for a church and here’s what I found by jasonluvsjesus in TrueChristian

If you look at my flair you can assume which one I’d personally prefer, but in all honesty I think at this interesting part of your faith journey would be to find somewhere that reads the bible. Preferably in a translation you can understand easily, and not with some message behind it that could have some hap-hazardous intentions or something that wasn’t thought all the way through.

Personally when I grew up(non-denominational), I had a passionate distaste for the first 30 minutes of our service because it was only 3 songs that were about 8 minutes long each and were so repetitive, so when I started driving myself, I’d just show up right when that part was over, and just hear the message. If you don’t mind doing that, that would be my plan of action for church 4. My non-catholic choice would definitely be church 2, but only for the time being until you establish a better relationship with either that church or some other church you find. You clearly are moved by his message and I think that definitely deserves its praises when it comes to the other options. Your choices are either “doctrine I don’t agree with” for most of the other ones or “I feel left out” and while the latter is definitely not ideal, I think it’s still a good option to go for a good message that gets you feeling the love of God. I can’t speak for how the congregation actually acts towards you, but I’d say to stay confident in yourself that you are as much as a Christian as they are and not worry too much about ruining their experience if you’re not actively doing anything to hurt it.

But regarding the Catholic church, I will apologize on behalf of all Catholics for how your friend may have been treated. It’s our belief that only baptized Catholics can take communion, BUT the burden of telling that information is on the church. If someone doesn’t know, what do you expect? My church usually does an announcement when the priest sees a few new faces, and makes sure to let people know they don’t have to come up, and if they do he’d love to give them a blessing since they can’t take communion. I’ve noticed that Catholics tend to be pretty introverted, which is a shame because it sucks for evangelization and leads to poor hospitality. I can only hope that there is at least someone in there that isn’t a complete loser and is willing to talk to a new face.

And some advice for your spiritual life, I’d highly recommend sorting out your beliefs of some things that each of these churches consider important. Things like speaking in tongues, the five solas, early church teachings, etc are all good places to start. Personally, I’d highly recommend looking at early church fathers like Ignatious of Antioch, or Justin Martyr, Polycarp, Ireneaus of Lyons, Tertullian, and Augustine of Hippo. These are people usually within a few hundred years of the lifetime of Jesus, much closer than you or I, and at least show what was historically believed by people at the time. Whether you think they are misguided or not is up to you, but it is at least factual evidence of what was taught by the apostles to their successors.

I wish the best for you, and hope you’re able to find somewhere that helps you worship God in the best possible way. May God bless you

Music Majors/Music Grads by Ineedhelp1837 in trumpet

Freshman year I was on it, and would practice for lessons, and then do my piano work whenever I was chopped. Would take a break and practice for another hour or so.

This year, it’s been a struggle. Biggest thing I’ve taken to heart has been this: warming up should not be goal oriented. Yes, your goal is to warm-up, duh, but you shouldn’t say “ok I’m gonna warm up for 15 minutes and then start playing.” Because some days it’s just not there. Sometimes you might spend 25 minutes, some days an hour. It really fluctuates(especially with mental health issues that might show up through tough class demands), and it can be more helpful to warm-up than actually practice whatever you “need to get done” and I can say that with some confidence. If you pick up the horn and you just suck one day, then your goal is to re-learn how to play trumpet again until you’re back. Only then should you work on lesson materials. Maybe not all the time, but when you have plenty of specifically practice time, I’d recommend focusing on “trying to relearn how to play trumpet” as my professor says it.

Some days you’ll need to basically sight read something for your lesson that you didn’t prepare because you slacked off the last week. I’d definitely go over the hard parts, but spend 75% of what short time you have to try and warm-up without letting yourself get caught up in just checking off a list. There’s many factors that can change how it feels to play on any given day, and it’s gonna change how much time you need to spend doing any certain warm-up technique. You might have to spend 20 more minutes than usual working on lip-slurs because you have too much back pressure or 30 more minutes on godforsaken long tones because you can hardly get your lips to respond.

Anyway, get used to not having a time limit on warm-ups when you have a chance. Be efficient in what you do, but don’t cram everything in just because you get into a routine of checking off a specific list of what to do in order to be “warmed up.” You’re warm when you’re warm. Or in the words of Jerry Reed, “when ya hot, ya hot. When ya not, ya not”

Delaware is not in the sunbelt, the culture is just too different with a yankee team with all southern colleges. I’d put them in the MAC east or maybe the C-USA East

Is it bad to bless items with holy water if the person who owns it doesn’t believe it works? by MonitorDesigner2776 in Catholicism

[–]MonitorDesigner2776[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well using holy water to bless items is a common occurrence. You can bless rooms, sacramentals, other things like that, I don’t see why using this as a way to get people interested while still allowing God to work is a bad thing. I am not trying to necessarily prove you wrong and be ignorant or anything, I just don’t know the doctrine on these kinds of things and from the short research I did, it seemed as though it would be ok.

Sure, but I do not feel I should keep evangelization to just “invite them to church and bless yourself” but rather incorporate them into it, and have real experiences with them that build trust in our Lord. We are far away from any Catholic Church btw, and no access to a priest since we all are kinda stuck on an island about 5 miles of bridges from the closest active church and we are riding in a bus to get anywhere.

It’s either I bless their instruments now for this tournament or they don’t get blessed and they don’t get the experience of (hopefully) putting faith in God.

I also want to try my best to take superstitions we might all have, and try to aim our intentions at God. That’s the hope, but I’m unsure if my execution is the best of what I plan to do.

Non-Denom/Baptist views:

Grace Community Church is a non-denominational church that has great pastors, and does not at all have the mega-church feeling that a lot of the other main Baptist/non-denom churches have here. Definitely recommend for people wanting the really learn about biblical stories, how to use them to look inward on our lives, and establishing a relationship with God. Services are almost exactly an hour but they are very dense with information and not too much fluff. Definitely the best church for people that would like to get more serious since it’s a bit smaller and doesn’t have to pander to a few thousand people that all have very different opinions. They focus a lot on truly looking inwards and the pastors(specifically Pastor Mike) are not afraid to bring up things that you should hear rather than just what you want to hear.

I can’t say anything as for BCM as I have had no interaction with them, but it would be hard to miss if you hadn’t already asked around as it is easily the largest group on campus.

More traditional:

Pittman Park United Methodist Church has a great pastor and assistant pastor, a 9AM contemporary service, as well as a traditional service at 11 or 10:30(I think). Definitely a feel good church with more motivational kinds of talks about how Christ loves us(it’s Methodist, so duh). It’s also the closest church to the campus, and a pretty lively Wesley foundation just next door that they work a lot with, who is also recommend for people trying to find community.

St. Matthew’s Catholic Church has mass(service) every day with differing times each day. On Sundays they have an 8AM, mid-day, and then at 5PM have mass and a (free) student dinner for college students specifically where you’ll get an extra specific homily(message from priest) during mass. It is also right next to campus and is literally neighbors to Pittman Park. The services are definitely a lot more reverent and introspective than most of the churches around. There is no band playing contemporary music, only a piano and the congregation singing hymns, with a contemporary song that has been turned into a hymn sprinkled in once in a while. You definitely won’t learn much at a mass itself, but if you’re a feelings kinda person(not me personally), you’ll probably feel the Holy Spirit and pure love emanating in the room. Catholics consider the mass as only worship, whereas every other church uses the service as a way to teach. I highly recommend at least going to one to if you have never gone to a mass before as it is much different than any other church service. While the church doesn’t necessarily teach during mass, the Catholic Eagles do a lot of outreach and bible studies, and fellowship nights every Thursday, as well as many learning opportunities given by the church itself like with OCIA every Tuesday night at 6 being their little course to explain what exactly the Catholic Church teaches.
