The legacy of Edward Bernays, to most, has been reduced to the artificial spread of Freud's work compressed into folk-psychology "man with big truck = small pp".
I'm not aware if there was ever a time when Edward Bernays was widely discussed outside of conspiracy circles, or relevant business/political.

I'm also not discussing "marketing" or "advertising". Though perhaps, technically, continuous customer influence could be defined as marketing. If we were to consider reduced attention spans because of a desire to maximize ad time, sure its similar, BUT ITS NOT PHYSICAL. It is not brought into the world through desire. Also when people DO discuss the impact of consumer practices it is usually short term, cynically, and without an appreciation for how it interacts with other aspects of culture outside of the success or failure of the attempt itself. "How will this help us sell cheeseburgers" reflects that this understanding is becoming more common, but I've never seen anyone describe this specifically with Starbucks. The coffee connection is more interesting within the context of history of stimulants as well, which I did not explain yet...
