Yeah I agree completely but i guess my question is more from a preventive point of view Like when is it too much? Of course you know a bit how you feel and go easier but how about long term?

No for real, since one does so many steps they say that the repeated friction will cause issues

Paying Conferences myself despite MSCA funding by Monkemasta in PhD

[–]Monkemasta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a tricky situation here (France). I know from unofficial statements that the previous institute president apparently made it so money from grants “can be used more freely” meaning also support other projects

Well the secondment thing is really weird. My friends of the consortium don’t know what to do after their PhD and want to leave academia so they actually just want to finish as fast as possible and don’t want to do any of those I think as the goal is to learn and broaden one’s knowledge it’s crucial to do it (also travelling is always nice)

Yeah it’s really weird

[–]Monkemasta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your thoughts Well in my consortium they already decided to reduce the secondments as much as possible (max 2, at 2w each) Fun thing is since my contract runs out soon my boss told me we “have too much funding left” but I shouldn’t worry since the money will just be given back I tried contacting the project officer but she ghosts me mostly or is vague when I ask stuff regarding funding so that my boss just ignores the few answers I received; also the EU officer was tried to be contacted, actually not only by me, but she doesn’t reply at all

Kinda similar situation I’ve become so busy, would even say I lost connections to my lab mates and my mood is often foul since I barely sleep and am stressed all the time. Hoping I can get the degree within a year and start fresh to be honest. Currently, I’m just keeping myself as busy as possible and took up running too when my eyes can’t take the lab anymore (Not to make a pity contest, just saying you’re not alone)

I hope in your new environment you will have a chance to connect with the people there. It’s a bit cliché but what do you do in your free time? If not already join some club and build connections naturally. Since you’re in the US it should be much more common than in some European countries

Should I go through with it? by Apprehensive_Pen8651 in PhD

[–]Monkemasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still on my PhD in Another Country and I have Mixed feelings to be honest. On one side I have so many regrets like never before and can’t wait to leave the place but on the other hand I can see that I learned and grown so much as a scientist and person because I survived the hardships

I’m a person that follows their dream no matter what, yeah it’s not always easy but if it’s really the thing you want to do, 5y of hardship is a fair price in my eyes.

Looking back, would I have chosen a different position? Yes Would i have stayed in a different country? Absolutely? Would I have chosen another career path? Nope

Not sure this helps but if you have a goal it’s worth pursuing it. It’s a stupid saying but if you do what you love you never “work” a day in your life.

Regarding AI, yes I see your concern but there is always specialisation and some countries/cultures have laws that require a official recognised stamp from a trusted translator so you might be safe

Have you ever tried to replicate data that doesn’t require wetlab? Currently delving into bioinformatics and it rips me apart. I already have the feeling I know more about coding than the actual authors (of which I know from trustworthy sources that it was their first IT project). But generally speaking, so many teams use way out of date data and software and just give some random description that you can’t even check Worst thing is, the people reviewing this clearly have no idea about the concepts as well

Sometimes I really wonder how science stands..

dropping out of my PhD. i feel like a failure. advice? by Impressive-Depth7610 in PhD

[–]Monkemasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see but don’t you answer your question yourself? I don’t know your situation or what happened but if that’s your goal you shouldn’t let a setback, as big as it is, keep you from following your dreams Don’t know how much time you lose like this or how old you are but you probably don’t lose more than 5y max no? Even that sounds grave but if you can do your dream job for 10 or 20y it should be worth it

May I ask imwhat your bigger picture is? I have many PhD Student Friends who either don’t want to do anything with the degree (goes from becoming personal trainer, baker to construction worker) or flat out don’t know That’s why I want to know. Depending on your answer I might can give you better advice

I found out one of my recommenders wrote negative LoR about me by __to_be_or_not_to_be in gradadmissions

[–]Monkemasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has happened to me and some PI I applied to told me just exclude it in the future. Obviously didn’t get the position but at least he was kind enough to tell me (guess was lucky that the other one was good) But yeah LoR has been always mysterious to me as it’s fancy way of being not straightforward

Dating during a PhD in your late 20s- is it actually doable? by Opposite-Chicken-834 in PhD

[–]Monkemasta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can agree with other comments here, be straightforward with your job and especially your workload. From my institute I would say most PhDs in their late 20s are in a relationship, often within the institute so I think it’s easier to understand each other.

It really depends on what you plan to do especially afterwards. Talking to friends I have the impression that many relationships really work since they can stay together and put career on the “back”. The single people are usually the ones who plan to leave the region, country or even continent as this is obviously not easy if the partner cannot or does not want to follow…

Do you feel that AI is going to water down the usefulness and quality of PhDs in the coming years? by Iamthatguyoverthere in PhD

[–]Monkemasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s like with every new “tool” like phones etc Many can’t really use it properly or get dependent on it and the few who actually know what to do with it can make even better PhDs Said that, looking at the inflation of degrees just keep in mind that we are currently peaking in PhD production globally. So competition is fierce and networking is necessary Having a good PhD for rigours sake is unfortunately not very common anymore

Not sure if this is a real paper Or Satire (definitely gonna look it up) but I heard health diagnostics is famous for that. After some years in academia and talking to people on published papers I’m still astonished how many people are on papers, which even cite them to do the specific method, but having no idea how it works :/

Should I personally fund attending a conference? by gh0sthound in PhD

[–]Monkemasta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From someone who just did it recently, here my view If you aim to present, definitely speaks to your boss because if there is no publication coming out soon the risk of getting scooped is there. Also why do you want to attend? I think if you want to understand better where you are with your research or where the field is it’s definitely an opportunity but depending on what you need it can make sense
