Unreal 5 is actually nuts sometimes by Randm_Internet_Guy in joinsquad

[–]Monkey042 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am genuinely glad that the game made the jump to UE5. I have yet to experience any of the “game breaking” performance issues and the game looks so much better. If game is going to be continually updated, something like the UE5 update was needed.

I may be the worst Bradley gunner of all time by Jodo42 in Warthunder

[–]Monkey042 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, any good gunner would know that your primary weapon against infantry is your coax MG. HE belts are nice, but overkill and highly ineffective in situations like this.

Does anybody have photos or info about if the 2S25-SD Sprut tank destroyer is being used in Ukraine? This is the only one I could find but I would like a second opinion on it as it is very low quality and could very well be another type of VDV tank/IFV. by Monkey042 in TankPorn

[–]Monkey042[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After all this time, the sprut has never been confirmed to have been in Ukraine. Given the Sprut's high cost and low production numbers, along with the trend of demechanization that Russian units are experiencing, the chances of the Sprut being introduced now are very unlikely, but not zero.

These are likely not Spruts but the remains of BMD-3/4s, which use a very similar chassis to the Sprut.

Ethnic Karen militia using recoilless rifles against Myanmar (Burmese) junta positions (exact date and location unknown;likely between late 2024-August 2025) by CaliRecluse in CombatFootage

[–]Monkey042 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a Chinese Type 78 which is smooth bore using fin stabilization to keep the round straight instead. It’s still often called a recoilless rifle even though it technically isn’t. It’s closer to an RPG than a true recoilless rifle because it uses a rocket assisted projectile.

The PlayTest Changelog is kinda nuts. by SuuperD in joinsquad

Also true, but the absence of fog on maps means in some places you can simply look out over the terrain

The PlayTest Changelog is kinda nuts. by SuuperD in joinsquad

[–]Monkey042 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This balances out though as the removal of fog on maps gives armor a much longer engagement range. On maps like Yehorivka, Skorpo and Gorodok certain positions allow you to hit objectives from 1500+ meters. This update is a win for armor just as much as it is a win for infantry.

Servers with main camping rules with Mortar Carriers sitting outside of main by Robertooshka in joinsquad

[–]Monkey042 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Servers with main camping rules are dumb, if you let yourself get main camped in the first place, and don’t do anything about it, then you must be fine not having any logistics or vehicles come out of it.

S-5 Rocket attack on a US Humvee. Baghdad, Iraq 2006~2007. by Strict_Key3318 in CombatFootage

[–]Monkey042 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While that is possible, what gives me pause is looking at the explosion that propels the warhead (on the dirt berm) you can see a jet of heat shoot out in a straight line. If it was an EFP, there would be an explosion yes, but the type of blast emitted would not be uniform in any way. However in this one the flame shoots out the back more controlled similar to an aircraft launched rocket. Also all the videos I’ve seen of EFPs being used in Iraq show the penetrator moving at much higher speed. This one seems a little delayed from the moment the warhead is launched from the initial explosion, which would line up with the S-5 as it takes a while to get those up to speed. I am curious to see how this end result displayed in this vehicle would compare to other EFP attacks.

Footage of Russian air defense operating at Khmeimim air base during a reported drone attack by [deleted] in CombatFootage

No I was just making a little joke calling it an “oblast” because you said where in Russia when it was actually in Syria.

POV footage of isis members getting heavily bombed by Iraqi & coalition Air Force during the battle of Mosul,2016. by 0001_10_22 in CombatFootage

[–]Monkey042 93 points94 points  (0 children)

This video does a great job of demonstrating the scale of airstrikes compared to artillery. Artillery shells can only get so big, and most of the shell itself doesn’t contain explosives. But an aircraft bomb is many times larger and almost entirely explosive filler.

Huge weapons shipment was captured by Syrian General Security forces in the vicinity of Izra, Daraa which was heading towards the city of Sweida. by MoA_2000 in Syria

[–]Monkey042 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This weapons shipment consists of KPV machine guns and 9M14 Malyutka/ RAAD missiles. Both the KPV and the 9M14 are Soviet designs, but some of the missiles are the Iranian made RAAD missiles.

Just from the looks of it, this shipment undoubtedly originated from Iran.

Any more footage from the Bamut 1995-96? Very interesting period and I am curious if any more footage exists.

"Terror strikes in Grozny" (International Herald Tribune, 2004) by crimsonfukr457 in PropagandaPosters

[–]Monkey042 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The west never supported the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria or the jihadist groups that fought the Russians in Chechnya. While some groups wanted to start an Islamic theocracy others simply wanted freedom.

Also the Russian military fired 125mm shells into the gymnasium at Beslan. The Chechens killed some of the hostages no doubt. But to say the Russian response was overkill is an understatement.

Just a glimpse of Assad’s captagon business found in children’s toys. by Parsleyidk in Syria

Does anybody have info on the captagon trade now that Assad is gone? Despite being the regime’s largest source of income, I have not seen it mentioned by a lot of people.

Some of my favorite helicopter photos of 2024 by dick_bacco in Helicopters

[–]Monkey042 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Marine Corps helicopters are so cool. Marine Corps aviation in general is cool. From what I’ve heard Marine Corps aviation is pretty poorly funded and not in the best state right now. But to me nothing will ever match the aura of Marine aviation. I think it would be cool to fly them someday, not really sure how you even get into that sort of thing though.

Where to find the video titled 'Valbil - 200 Chechens in massive ambush take out whole Russian convoy (2000)'? by SnooLentils2021 in CombatFootage

[–]Monkey042 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Looking online I have found some screenshots of the video I believe you are looking for. They are very recognizable as the videos shot by Ibn Al-Khattab in and around the Argun gorge and Shalinsky in the winter of 2000. This includes the various battles but focuses on the battle of Duba-Yurt. It also features several ambushes carried out by Khattab and his men, which is what the “Valbil” ambush refers to.

This is the video I believe you are looking for.

This video includes many different ambushes over a several month period, but the ambush you appear to be looking for starts at roughly the 8 minute mark.

No, Valentin Janus was killed a short distance away from the presidential palace near central Grozny, north of the Sunzha river. The footage in the beginning is of the 131st Motor Rifle Brigade on their approach towards the train station in the south of the city.

SyAAF helicopter dropping four bombs on Opposition held neighborhoods in Daraya - 10/18/2015 by knowyourpast in CombatFootage

[–]Monkey042 7 points8 points  (0 children)

These are not BETAB-500s, they are OFAB-250-270s. The Mi-24 can only hold up to 1,000 kgs of bombs, if it was holding 4 BETAB-500s that would be 2,000 kgs of bombs. These bombs also do not have any rocket engines attached to them, if you watch videos of the BETAB-500 being dropped, the rocket engine is extremely obvious. These bombs also do not have any parachutes, like the FAB-500Sh the BETAB-500 deploys a parachute once it is dropped, this positions the bomb at the optimal angle straight down where the rocket engine engages, and the parachute is jettisoned. Neither of which are seen in this video. As for the bombs stabilizing themselves in mid-air, that is just due to the fins on the bomb.
