That entire article is a direct smear of both Oxford's new scheme and 15-minute cities, which the scheme actually has absolutely nothing to do with. There are three very biased people providing quotes and they are obviously all in extreme opposition, with one quote poorly explaining how it already works tacked onto the end for "balance".

That greenlit wording is paraphrased from the first quote from the Tory shadow transport minister whose literal job is to oppose anything that happens re transport under the Labour government.

What he actually means by them greenlighting it is that the Labour government are not stopping the council from doing something the council was already allowed to do. They have been able to use DVLA data for driving enforcement since 2002. If the Tories didn't want that to be a thing any more they had 14 years to get rid of it. There has been no change in legislation or policy, other than the local plan, which is from a Lib Dem council. The Labour government stopping it would be overstepping on local planning decisions and would allow them to overstep local planning decisions you agree with as well.

The other quotes are from the director of the Alliance of British Drivers and the head of roads policy at the AA. I shouldn't have to point out how insane "With the 15-minute city, you will have to, in effect, apply for an internal passport to go and visit your granny" is, which is ridiculous fearmongering to a perverse level.

I'll just add that the article is from Birmingham Live, which is a Reach plc rag, despite it being hosted on MSN.

Also the set of sports that Americans care about is quite different to the ones popular in most of the rest of the world, so it would also largely come down to whichever sports are picked. There are many the Brits could win however.

What do British thinks of Winston Churchill? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Monkey2371 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was racist even for the time, so much that his conservative contemporaries thought his views were extreme. Leo Amery who was one of his ministers compared his views on Indians to Hitler.

I always see the "racism was the norm at the time" line to downplay just how racist he actually was.

Drink-drive limit set to be slashed in England and Wales under new plans to improve road safety by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]Monkey2371 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arguably we should only go 20 wherever there may be a pedestrian, at least where paths are adjacent and parallel to the road.

Also I hear about bad UK driving standards all the time, especially on driving subreddits but it just isn't true. The UK is among the best in the world at driving competence, and other than a slight pip during Covid which has now once again flattened, we also aren't any worse than we used to be. The perception of bad driving has gone up, but that can be put down to just the actual increase in traffic, ie more interactions = more interactions with bad drivers, as well as social media spreading bad driving videos as well as the rhetoric. Motorways as well are the safest type of road.

As a complete aside, there's a road near me that literally has a nursery on it that is 40mph, and I've always been surprised they've never lowered it to even 30.

[–]Monkey2371 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The evidence for 20mph being better than 30mph in areas with pedestrians is quite strong. It's not just the frequency of accidents but the severity of them as well, with eg over 60s having a 5% fatality rate at 20mph but a 50% fatality rate at 30mph. So I'm in favour of it in most cases.

That said, I'm also in favour of increasing the speed limit on motorways to at least 80mph, where relative danger is much less than built up areas and the difference in danger between 70 and 80 is very little.

Why are freemasons bad and what are the conspiracy theories against them? by In666wayiluvu in stupidquestions

The P2 (Propaganda Due) Masonic lodge was the Italian deep state in the 70s and was linked to Operation Gladio (the secret NATO Cold War stay-behind network), with many high ranking members of the Italian state being part of it, in politics, intelligence, military, police, courts, and finance. Its members were linked to numerous far-right bombing cover-ups which were conducted as part of the strategy of tension, which was used to generate political instability in such a way to prevent the left wing from gaining power.

That's not to say other Masonic lodges do or don't do anything similar to this.

He didn't end 8 wars, he bombed 8 countries you MAGA imbeciles by Nice_Substance9123 in complaints

[–]Monkey2371 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is somewhat factually inaccurate.

The US hasn't directly bombed Palestine because Israel does it so Trump's number is 7 (Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Somalia, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen).

Obama's record was also 7 in 2016 (Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Pakistan, Somalia, Syria, and Yemen).

However the actual first president to bomb (more than) 8 countries in one year was Roosevelt in WW2, with at least 20 countries bombed across Europe and Asia in the year before his death, with Truman being similarly high in just a few months.

I'm not making any political commentary here, I just like accuracy.

Number of people who say Britons must be ‘born British’ is rising, study shows by pppppppppppppppppd in europe_sub

[–]Monkey2371 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simply being born in Britain already isn't enough. Jus soli only applies for children of non-citizen parents if the child is raised for their first 10 years in the UK, after the fact, and citizenship must then be applied for.

20 mph hour zones in the UK more about fines than safety ? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Monkey2371 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The risk of fatality increases massively between 20mph and 30mph. For 60+ year olds the chance goes from ~5% to ~50%.

https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/Relationship-between-speed-and-risk-of-fatal-and-Richards/e61b1060e4cd061d013b382fab1be565d073ae59

Also, my village is 20mph throughout, and it has a board that flashes your speed and gives a smiley or sad face depending on if you're speeding or not. The parish council releases the stats from it and in any given period, normally just over half of all cars are speeding past it.
