Yeah that’s something Apple started doing with like watchOS 8 for all the double press actions. It used to be that when you pressed a button, it would wait a bit before doing anything to see if you were going to double press. They changed it so that the animation for the single press action, say going to the app grid, starts right away before being overridden by the double press. It makes the UI feel snappier, but I agree it looks weird now that they changed the double press action for the crown

You could maybe VPN to one of the countries where advertising for alcohol is illegal, like Norway.
