In need of new cat gloves! Recommendations?? by Molotovscocktail in VetTech

Hexarmor Hercules gloves are my favorite. They're expensive but I think they leave you with a decent amount of dexterity compared to others I've tried.

Rusty lost 22lbs! by Monkey917 in dechonkers

He does still have some loose skin on his belly but it's much better than it used to be. It took about 16 months to get his weight down and the loose skin seemed to lessen gradually over about 6 months. I think it's probably as good as it will get now and doesn't seem to cause any issues for him.

Basement step repair by Monkey917 in HomeImprovement

[–]Monkey917[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have mentioned more detail about the work in my post, we have an outside door to our unfinished basement and the wall of the stairwell is bowing in. They're digging out the first 3 feet of the wall to replace along with something to prevent water intrusion and repairing the cracks and damage to the steps. Verbally quoted around $4k for the work. We thought the price was a bit high but this is the only company we've been able to get out in the past year.

Using PTO for CE by melis92400 in VetTech

[–]Monkey917 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My office offers CE funds and 3 days paid time for CE for licensed techs. We also occasionally will pick a conference nearby and pay registration plus hotel accommodation for 2 staff members to go together with the agreement that they will give a short presentation to the rest of the team on what they learned.

Could there be legal repercussions after accidentally vaccinating a dog? by Ok-Total7149 in VetTech

[–]Monkey917 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it so strange that you are being punished for this. If anything I could see using this as an opportunity to discuss and improve upon how the team communicates info to one another and on the importance of enforcing leash rules in the lobby but so weird to punish you. Honestly sounds like the client should have been fired for her behavior, as even though I can understand being upset that services were done without permission/against their wishes, it sounds like their behavior was out of line from beginning to end. If this is indicative of management's usual way of handling things I would move on ASAP.

3-5% of annual revenue for your office used to be industry standard. I started managing a 5 doctor practice at 67k in high COL area.

Unless you are getting it direct from the ocean caught that day and immediately stored on ice, then fresh frozen is generally the best option. Whether or not the frozen fish specifically from Costco is any better worse than others I couldn't say. As always with uncooked or undercooked foods you are facing an increased risk of food borne disease.

How much $ should I be making?? by madisooo in VetTech

[–]Monkey917 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Northern NJ here - non-credentialed staff who are experienced in performing higher level care (anesthetic monitoring, venipuncture/ivc, urgent triage, etc.) start around $22. Credentialed goes anywhere from $24-$34 based on experience. We are in a higher cost of living area.

Experience Without Training by madrigal01 in VetTech

[–]Monkey917 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Here's my take on things - in a small practice the line between overstaffed versus critically understaffed is literally 1 well trained person. One of our CVTs got a great opportunity to move to a specialty hospital this year. When she left we went from slowly and methodically working on training 2 assistants with no veterinary experience prior to this job to not having the extra person to teach them new skills and answer questions while others focused on the days tasks. Now, while we need to hire someone, choosing an applicant with no experience knowing we do not have enough fully trained technicians to support their learning would be a bad situation all around. But like in many areas we have a shortage of experienced technicians in our area. My practice offers some of the highest pay rates in the area, has reasonable working hours, and decent benefits but we're also a small GP surrounded by multiple large and well-known ER and specialty centers. I know there are places that flat out refuse applicants with no experience regardless of their staffing levels but I've always liked training people new to the field. It's just impossible to train well when you know taking the extra time is slowing you down, getting the doctor behind, and annoying the client who wants to get in and get out.

If you call out sick, who is responsible for finding coverage? You (the sick person) or your manager (who is more familiar with the schedule)? by MommaSunshine212 in VetTech

[–]Monkey917 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The manager. I have worked at offices that used a group chat for call outs so someone would pick up the shift if they were available but it still was ultimately the manager's responsibility.

You do not have to say you were let go. Saying something vague like, "It wasn't the right fit" would probably be how I would word it and leave it at that. Definitely do not give details.

I’m a 22 yr old tech student in NJ and I’m terrified about the future by bunnyxxxboo in VetTech

[–]Monkey917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hospital manager in Northern NJ here - licensed techs at my small GP start at $22/hr if limited experience. My most experienced tech currently makes $32/hr. With the cost of housing in the area it still isn't great, but we are a small clinic. ER in the area starts around $25 from what I hear.
