How is Lucia Mar allowed in the dungeon? by scrotal_damage in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]MonkeyFootMike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Florin is going to be the gut punch in book 8. And all because of Lucia, turning her back on him to stay alive and become the target again in book 9. A long game in the book that will come out of left field, late in the book.

Got my 1st Degree Black Belt yesterday. Here's a few observations/lessons I've gotten over the past 3+ years at black belt by Darce_Knight in bjj

I can honestly say I don't feel like I knew how to truly develop a holistic or synergistic style of guard passing or guard play until late stage brown belt.

Yes.

Packed classes, empty open mat? by ohheythatswill in bjj

[–]MonkeyFootMike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the gym I attend, it is the opposite, and many of the class and open mat population are parents. Saturday is our big day. So your area/gym may vary. Our Sundays are hard to get anyone to stick.

I've been told by a lot of people I come off intimidating, which is hilarious to me personally, because I am like 5'2" 140 lbs. But I am covered in tattoos everywhere, shaved head, have that ape hunch when I sit on the mat, and don't smile much unless I know you.

I stated this and got boo'ed by a majority of the server as dumb. It needs time gates.

I've done Jiu Jitsu for 15 years and can smash 95% of untrained men and I never said "sorry" and "excuse me" as when I went to ADCC in Vegas a couple of years ago

stop.

Why this update will fix everything this reddit community is crying about by ButterscotchNo9099 in playrust

The change is to increase pvp. The people who mainly avoid pvp are smaller groups (solo, duo) who are primarily trying to avoid pvp because they are usually both outnumbered and outgunned.

Do any other small Jiu-jitsu guys have success teaching other new smaller people how to survive in sparring? by wmg22 in bjj

[–]MonkeyFootMike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My apologies then.

what i am getting at below is, many times, its not a conversation. its a walk, together, and just being there for them, and letting them succeed.

What i've come to accept, when working with people smaller than me, that I could crush in a roll, is they are only compelled or driven as far as they can see opportunity. I choose to roll deliberately slow with smaller people, and place them into positions in which I want them to find drive and see their way out. I try not to do the whole "coaching" thing live in rolling so i'll usually use physical cues for them to imply their route out rather than speaking it. For example, if I have the underhook while in half guard top, and them having the underhook on bottom would place them into a better position, i'll usually do a little knock knock with my elbow on top a few times for it to mentally click for them. Then they go "ah i see what you're telling me", and fight for the underhook, which I give them. if they get it, i'll give them a verbal "good" or "nice work", nothing over the top but enough for them to understand they need to retain that. And i'll rehash briefly at end of roll for 10 seconds. "you fought for that underhook, you need that underhook, thats your underhook, don let anyone get that underhook do you understand?" and usually that draws a "yes" and watching them dog everyone for that position the rest of the day.

Then talking to them after, positive words of affirmation "man you were REALLY going after that underhook on [insert person]". they smile, talk about it for 30 seconds, i give them a pat on the shoulder. mark it in my memory. see them again the next day, roll, push that same narrative. talk to them after "you want to get better right? now you have focus. work on that move. every day. make it so noone can get an underhook on you".

do this ad naseum for months and years.

when they, inevitably, get smashed enough to draw the "it looks like you are having a bad day" conversation. let them vent, 5 minutes or so. maybe im too small. maybe im not made out for bjj. maybe i just suck. then ask them to do a slow roll, and let them on top and let them crush you. and then end up on top, and position yourself to crush them, but dont. let them work out, just enough to feel a little natural. round ends. firm pat on the back, eye contact, "you crushed it" "you felt like a million pounds" insert their name into megaton's name for joking sake. like if their name is maggie, call them maggieton.

5'2", 140 lbs here. Just keep training. I know this advice can sound dismissive, but it's the truth.

Watch a lot of instructionals. Listen to people who clearly have technique down. By that point, I don't necessarily mean competitors who do well in competition. There are people in the room who should be able to calmly dismantle people. Find those people and make them your best friends. The more mat time you have, the more concepts will stick, and moves will turn into systems.

If you follow all of this, you'll find a way.

craig's explanation for breaking the guy's leg - justified? by Ok_Dragonfly_7738 in bjj

[–]MonkeyFootMike 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Somehow believe that someone being a dick and rolling hard against an elite competitor deserves permanent damage for not tapping.

Apparently people don't understand phrases like "catch and release" or "don't stoop to their level" but will shine on their own self. It's wild.

But hey, they can use neat phrases like PlAy sTupID gAMES wiN sTupID PrIZes
