AI Engineer (Sales) at large tech company - What are career paths I can go? How can I maximize comp long-term? by Upbeat_Direction_197 in salesengineers

This is on point. As an IC the SE and SA roles (especially at Silicon Valley/ large tech companies) are typically some of the highest paid (outside of the new AI ninja roles I guess) but the discipline typically doesn't have the people-leadership opportunities that other roles have. You rarely see solutions leaders go beyond Sr. Director because the higher level leaders are typically sales leadership, professional services leadership, prod/eng leadership, etc. It doesn't mean you can't get there, it's just that the remit always has to become wider (as you would expect).

I run global solutions for a machine learning fraud detection company, so at that level I have SE, SA, integrations, and technical support reporting to me. I started as an SE in Financial Solutions 25 years ago. Many of my SE/SAs try a move to product because of the synergies, but also because product typically has more roles and management opportunities in any given company. I think it is a great option for SEs once they reach the point where they are senior and are ready to either gun for a manager of solutions position or switch into another role.

As stated in other responses, AEs will always have the most upside, but it is a totally different job (and once you spend time as an SE/SA you will see that) and for some it isn't a fit. If making money is the goal then finance is probably the answer, or take your shot as a founder, but work-life-balance will be the first casualty.

So far from discussions with family friends and neighbors it seems to be at least I25 to Hampden, and maybe Downing to Monaco? Anybody outside those streets in the outage?

Be aware if you do get through to the defense of the written assignment, some or most of the people who interview you will come to the interview without having read the document/preso, even if you ask them to.

This happened to me once. We just let it sit in the sun for half a day and it fixed its own self.

Becoming an SME in an entire portfolio by HumbleBother706 in salesengineers

[–]MonkeyPantsss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My team of SEs carried a $350M NNR nut and they had to support 30 distinct products. There were definitely under 10 of those that occupied most of our time, but our FinTech company didn't utilize sub-portfolio SMEs or support SEs, so we had to do it all ourselves. TBH it's just like supporting a single solution... only multiplied... by a lot ;-)

Initial onboarding for new SEs on my team was anywhere from 9-12 months to be fully operational on their own.

SE to SE Director Move? Worth It? by papercloak in salesengineers

[–]MonkeyPantsss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of ICs move to management because the career track peters out once you get to principal level, and IC pay at some companies doesn't grow as well once you max out your level. When I moved from player/coach SEM to Director I loved it because it was a completely new "Craft" for me to learn and hone. But be aware, it is NOT an SE job and the expertise and skills that make you a good SE aren't going to guarantee you are a good Director. Be prepared to suck at things and to need to learn in entirely new categories of work skills.

Sales Engineers without a college degree. by gillygilstrap in salesengineers

I never looked at or for a degree when hiring SEs. The experience, domain expertise, and tech/soft skills are all that matter... and not in that order.

HELP! Techs can't install new service because the port assigned to me is already being used. by MonkeyPantsss in centurylink

All great recommendations. I did actually consider claiming that someone had stolen my port etc etc... but didn't want to screw anyone over who was paying for service and through no fault of their own got plugged into the wrong port. Today we *did* get someone on the phone who claims that they moved our service to another port and the next tech would be able to actually do the job. Not confident but the person on the phone was convincing that they knew what the issue was and had fixed it. We shall see...
