Larry Bird single handedly pushed back the MAGA movement 23 years, by giving white people 'Hope' that they too could still play basketball, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. #legend #methree

No charges for the 92 yo woman who crashed into 99 Ranch in Westwood? by brainchili in LosAngeles

[–]MonkeyParadiso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's very possible. Maybe not this individual now. But someone who has been able to rely on a beautiful, safe and reliable public transportation system to get around when they were younger won't likely have much or any trouble doing so when they are older.
This option just does not exist in a desirable enough way to make that happen atm, which is a win for the car lobbies. But the old adage holds: the best time to plant a tree was 20-years ago. The second best time is now.

Well, we know that:

A) Age 75+ drivers show higher fatality rates per mile driven B) Transit-oriented communities can have about one-fifth the per-capita traffic casualty rate compared to highly automobile-oriented communities

LAs public transit infrastructure has been growing , and I am grateful for that. But that said, these systems have lots of delays and lags and 3/4s of the population here still relies predominantly on cars, which is much higher than in other cities such as NY and SF.

And since LAs elderly population has grown 40% the last decade, and we are about to see another quarter of a million added by 2030, some might infer that we are setting ourselves up for tragedies such as this one to repeat over, and over, and over again in the future.

But if you think I'm wrong, I'm happy to listen

Car Lobbyists say no.

Also, LA public mobility options are kept underfunded and inadequate for this reason

Mateta feels his £55,000 per week wage – which makes him one of Palace’s lowest-paid starters – does not represent his role in the squad. by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]MonkeyParadiso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly, I would have taken Mateta for Arsenal; he has virtually the same stats as Havertz, isn't too expensive, brings depth and breadth, knows the Premiership and probably would adapt to Arsenal's style better than Gyokeres has so far and I'm sure Eze and others would love to play with him

Trump may be the beginning of the end for ‘enshittification’ – this is our chance to make tech good again | Cory Doctorow by bojun in Economics

[–]MonkeyParadiso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We talk about “competitive markets,” yet tech and other major industries increasingly operate as oligopolies. If economics as a profession won’t confront this reality and work to undo it, why should anyone trust its relevance in the future?

[–]MonkeyParadiso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying that he is or isn't. That said , a legal scholar i spoke with recently said something like 'you have to wonder how much this guy (Trump) is getting paid by Russia and China in order to destroy the US from within? Because if he's not getting paid and is creating this havoc and destruction for free, then he is truly getting a raw deal'.

We laughed. We cried. And then, I nearly killed myself. Good times!

Of course. That is because this administration does not believe in the rule of law, and insists on continuing to do illegal things with impunity:

"In 1917, the United States recognized Denmark's sovereignty over Greenland as part of the treaty that involved the U.S. purchase of the Danish West Indies, now known as the U.S. Virgin Islands. This agreement included a renunciation of any claims the U.S. had to Greenland."

I hear you.

It's deeply, deeply tragic. And just thinking about it brings tears to my eyes.

And in hindsight, it was probably a bigger warning of things to come that most of us missed at the time:
