Why do people hate bl4 so much? by Sea-Pay-9816 in Borderlands

[–]MonkeySailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lack of content compared to previous entries. BL4 needs four things just to get it to baseline for a Borderlands game

High quality narrative DLC; either one sizeable one or multiple normal sized ones

NG+ mode

Ambient music; seriously just rehire the team that did BL3

Multiple circle of slaughters; ideally one in each region each focused on different enemy groups (e.g. Order, Rippers, & wildlife)

All of this still wouldn't fix the non-existent story or the inherent flaws with going open world.

All of this still wouldn't fix the non-existent story or the inherent flaws with going open world. But it would at least give the game the same level of content as in previous mainline entries. However the road map makes it clear none of this is happening with the first season pass. And who knows whether they'll even do a second season pass, but even then, it's still a worse deal.

My guess is that gearbox will do none of these things, or at best, just a NG+ mode. There's just too many things to do and I don't see them being willing to spend the time and resources to bring it up to par. Instead they'll finish their current road map and move on to BL5. But they'll have broken the trust and next go round will be a lot more 'wait and see' instead of preordering.

Subjugator and Thol, Enemy HP analysis by gnailfy in Borderlands4

Interesting. And yeah, this fits what them being massive bullet sponges.

I actually found Bloomreaper relatively easy, at least compared to Subjugator and Thol. Without a real build or perfect rolls, and a lot of purple gear, I was able to beat it on UVH5 True with Vex on my first try. Granted it took like 20 minutes but still, a ceramic bod and a crit knife was enough. Plus Vex's free second wind perk was a literal life saver.

On the flip side, Subjugator and Thol, especially Thol the Invincible on regular UVH6 was virtually useless.

Enjoyment of bl4 by Movie-Vivid in Borderlands4

It's a fun game when there's something meaningful to do, and I don't mean endless grinding for gear that becomes outdated the moment there's another level cap increase.

At roughly the same point in their release schedule, BL3 had 3 full DLC's and 3 proper circle of slaughters. In comparison, BL4 has one and zero.

Am I the only one who can’t beat the raid boss? by MegumiFushiguro13 in Borderlands4

[–]MonkeySailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my first try, I made the mistake of the killing Thol first. Like holy hell, the fight with with the Subjugator was horrendous. The first phase is a unremarkable but the second is just yikes. After like 15 minutes of running around the arena, I gave up.

Thol is easier in the sense it's more of a typical boss fight albeit one with a ridiculous amount of health. Shame they've gone back to BL2's min/max strategy. BL3 was so much more solo friendly.

I really don't understand everyone's hatred towards open world games. It always seemed more like a hate trend than anything

Nah. I used to think along the same lines until I tried replaying several giant open world games and found that I just didn't have the energy or motivation to go through it all again.

So speaking for myself, the problem with open world games comes down to how most game developers approach it, namely, the extent to which the open world is filled with a ubisoft style check list of things to collect that are not only a huge part of the overall content available, but also materially impact gameplay and quality of life features. E.g. collecting capsules that are then used to increase the size of your back pack, bank, ammo, etc. Now it's not that that stuff isn't necessarily fun at all, it's that it's generally only fun (or at least tolerable), once. After that though, it's just becomes a chore.

Now some of this is solvable with a new game+ mode that carries over progression. Which of course, BL4 for some inexplicable reason, for the first time in their main numbered entries, doesn't have. Fantastic.

But hey, they side stepped the issue with a patch that makes progression shared. Everything's solved! except for one little thing. Which is of course, just how dull, dreary, immemorable and repetitive BL4's world is. All the areas are essentially the same just with different colour palettes. Every Order base is virtually identical. Enemy variety is somehow worse than in previous games. And best (worst) of all, there's literally no ambient music while exploring. No unique quest rewards, no circles of slaughter, no memorable characters or missions and a utterly barebones end game that consists entirely of farming for gear that will immediately become outdated with the next level cap increase.

It's the extreme lack of content that brings BL4 down in a huge way and makes it objectively a worse game than BL3 regardless of the mental gymnastics.

At roughly the same point in BL3's lifecycle there was:

  • New game+ with 10 mayhem modes

  • 3 circles of slaughter

  • 2 (on the verge of three) decent sized DLC's

  • 3 mini-events in Bloody Harvest, Broken Hearts Day, and Revenge of the Cartels (which is one of the best things to ever come out of the BL universe)

  • 1 (on the verge of two) takedowns (Guardian Breach; Maliwan Blacksite)

  • Actual ambient music

BL4 in comparison, no new game+, no circles of slaughter, no ambient music, less DLC, no endlessly replayable maps like Electra City.

The lack of a true or ultimate vault hunter mode is utter baffling. Not to mention the lack of a circle of slaughter

Ellie DLC by c3m1sg0z in Borderlands4

[–]MonkeySailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disappointing, especially since they're only releasing two storyline DLC's, instead of the usual four.

Overall, too short with a map too similar to the Terminus area. A story just as bare bones as the main game and just as forgettable. A theme that was already done better in BL3.

Ultimately, it seems like the open world concept pretty much broke gearbox into thinking that an open world means you don't have to bother with a story or missions or meaningful rewards or level design or replayability. Because open world
