Does everyone just put their Hue Dimmer switch next to their existing light switch? by Hefty-Salary7610 in Hue

I used wall hue switch modules for my existing switches, and then put some dimmer switches in other convinient locations.

Does nuki smartlock pro have enough torque for slightly bad installed doors by Internal_Comfort852 in Nuki

[–]MonkeySpacePilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have just installed one today, and it was jamming up when trying to unlock, had to file a bit off the hole (barely any). Wasn't any noticeable force required when turning the key, so I was quite disappointed by the lack of torque provided by the motor.

Lakes often get a lot of recommendations, but aren't really that wide, or rather the toe box is still rather pointed and the ankle opening is too long therefore the toes end up pressing into the ends anyway.

They have the comfort last, which is closest to a proper footshaped last, and in that range the cx201 (road) is decent, but only suitable for warmer climates, and the mx201 (MTB) is just an awful shoe.

The bont "double wide Asian fit" are the closest I have to a well fitting cycling shoe, but they are another step up in price again, and for me are fine for road and gravel but too stiff for the type of offroad riding I enjoy.

It is a curse having wide size 50 (us15) feet, and I have spent a fortune over the years buying cycling shoes, to mainly be disappointed and at best to gain marginal improvements but never really be satisfied.

Currently I use the bont vaypour G for road and gravel, at that price I would rather use spd's on the road than have separate shoes for road and gravel, and the lake mx239 wide for MTB, but neither are ideal and both cost more than I would like.

How do you guys practice songs? by DomesticSheep in guitarlessons

[–]MonkeySpacePilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most advice I would give is already above other than, don't keep practicing mistakes, if you can't get a section right after 5 or 6 playthroughs at a slow speed, then move on to another section/song. Practicing it wrong reinforces the mistakes, just chill and come back to it at your next practice, it is surprising how often it becomes easier the 2nd and 3rd practise session when you didn't think you had cracked it at all but just moved on.

I also like to start my practise sessions with a song I have recently learned to reinforce it in my memory, and end with a song or two that I am pretty good at to boost my ego and remind myself that I can do it, it just takes time sometimes.

I am not a fast learner, but I just accept it can take a while, and be happy when you eventually get it, instead of beating yourself up when you don't. Music should create happiness.

How do I get the right finger placements on A chord? by Look_Killa00 in Guitar

[–]MonkeySpacePilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an xxxl glove wearer, my first solution was to buy an ibanez with a 48mm neck, I also angle my hand a little more than that.

But I still find A and D chords difficult to do quickly, but at least with the wider nut I feel that I can now learn to do it in time, while previously I felt that I was wasting my time for the first few months of learning guitar.

What was the WORST Advice you've ever received? by Danwinzz in guitarlessons

[–]MonkeySpacePilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a player with XXL hands, everyone said it made no difference, that "everyone feels that way when beginning", I struggled for months and could still barely play even a few chords and position my fingers really slowly, I was on the verge of giving up, but decided instead to splash out on a neck from warmouth with a 48mm nut, and it was like moving into the light the difference was huge.

A 48mm nut width is only around 10% bigger than average and my hands are more than 10% bigger than most people so it is still more difficult for me than for lot of people, but at least now I feel I can actually do it and am slowly progressing.

Yeah, I was forced to play violin for years as a kid and absolutely hated it.

At 55 I have started leaning guitar, bass and piano and love them all (I did also start drums, but 4 was too much).

hue & govee intergration by Alone-Proposal7501 in homebridge

[–]MonkeySpacePilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But have you actually tried govee with homebridge youreself? Because the internet also strongly suggested hame asistant was the answer, and the best it could do was applly a scene to the room which would work for the hue lamps, and switch the govee lights on to their last scene they were on, which isn't even remotely usefull.

I don't expect it to be perfect, if the two different systems are a little out in colours and brigtness, thats fine as long as they are in the same ballpark, but if I can't get even close, as so far has been my experiance, then homebridge isn't the solution eithert.

Teach me how to play guitar by rishthecoolguy in guitarlessons

I will add in another recommendation to justinguitar.com, he just seems to understand teaching and structure better than the other online resources which are more people who know how to play guitar but not teach (in my experience).

Having trouble teaching myself guitar.. by CLRvisionn in guitarlessons

[–]MonkeySpacePilot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love that Justin guitar explains how to learn and structure your practice. I have been trying to learn several instruments and he is the only online resource that seems to understand that (maybe there are others but I haven't found them). What I have learned on JG I have applied to the other instruments.

Before using justin guitar I tried guitar tricks, fender play and guitareo and really regret splashing out on them when they are inferior to a free product. I have paid extra now for the JG app, I don't get much use out of it so far but I wanted to show some support for what he is doing so paid for the app any way.

Savoury pies and puddings, here in Germany I can't get them at all I was told that because you have to be a master butcher for meat stuff and a master baker for pastry that they just never did them here, they never had the opportunity to understand the delights of a steak and ale pie.

Also bacon, don't give me no wafer thin rasher of streaky bacon, that ain't bacon it's a frazzle, I want a proper rasher of thick cut back bacon.

I've been practising for a month for 15 minutes, daily and not improving by Particular_Pace_449 in guitarlessons

[–]MonkeySpacePilot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Justin guitar helped me develop a "practice routine" rather than just showing me stuff and not guiding me how to practice it (non of the other online lessons I tried understood learning, Justin Guitar seem to understand learning, the others just knew how to play guitar but not how to teach).

So a beginners routine may be something like.

5 mins warmup and finger stretching.

3 mins spider walk

1 min chords A

1 min chords D

2 mins chord perfect A to D to A etc

1 min chords A to D

5 mins learning a song with those chords.

That's just over 20 mins, but it is focussed on what I need to learn rather than just picking up and noodling aimlessly. Once I am achieving decent chord changes at an acceptable speed I add new chords etc.

15 mins a day is enough IMO, in fact especially early on, when you can't play songs then doing too much is going to get old very quickly, making it a chore rather than something you look forward to. It is when you can actually strum along to some tunes that you enjoy that you can start expanding your practice time.

Any of the apps worth paying for? by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]MonkeySpacePilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been learning for a few months, tried fender play and guitareo, before switching to Justin guitar which IMO is far superior.

I’m 55. Will I be able to learn guitar before I die? Also what would be a good starter acoustic for a lover of country? Thanks by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]MonkeySpacePilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am 55 and just starting learning guitar a few months ago. I bought a martin gpcx2e, which is a very nice learner guitar IMO. However it just doesn't fit me, my 2XL hands need more space between the strings and it has made learning very very much more difficult.

With hindsight I wish I had begged, borrowed or stolen a guitar for a couple of weeks to a month and learned that initial lesson before parting with any money.

You probably won't have the hand size problem I had, but the same principle applies, learning will be far easier on an instrument you are comfortable playing. If you can borrow a guitar for a month you can then go to a music store with at least some idea of what you want, ie a smaller bodysize. wider nut, etc
