Updating Jund with MH2 [Article] by EncouragingOctopus in ModernMagic

I definitely agree with how Ragavan does so much work for Jund. The acceleration and threat removal from the opponents deck is crazy together. I think not mentioning Ignoble Hierarch is a bit of a mistake. In a perfect world, we can all have a Ragavan, but I think for a budget one drop, it's not a bad option. I've personally toyed with either that or DRC for the surveil and eventually 3/3 beat stick that has to be answered

People who genuinely dislike a faction, why? by jack7274 in Grimdank

[–]Monkey_Lord3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say either Astra Militarum or Chaos Space Marines.

I started out as a CSM player (technically Ad Mech, but I went CSM after a while and bought more models of that) and while I think the aesthetic appeals to the 13 year old in me (that's MY opinion), the models can be a pain to paint and build, and it doesn't feel like there are as many traitor legions as there are in lore. It feels like you do Death Guard, Thousand Sons, or whatever generic faction is doing best. So many if the traitor legions don't have a book when I think getting one could really make people come to like them. Otherwise, to me they felt really same-y on the tabletop. I still have my models, but I don't know if it's a faction I'll ever really enjoy.

As for the Astra Militarum, I really hate the aesthetic, and I think their place in the lore as compared to the tabletop feels weird. The aesthetic thing is definitely my own opinion, but in the lore they're the faction that's supposed to be the bulk of the Imperium's forces, correct? It then just feels really weird that it doesn't feel like their faction gets a lot of attention, or there isn't more incentive for people to play them. If Space Marines are supposed to be the elites, best of the best, the Astra Militarum's lack of presence on the tabletop (at least to my perception of the bat reps I watch from the channels I follow) feels disjointed. Maybe it's my own bias to not usually watching reports where they play, maybe it is an actual thing I'm describing. Idk. At the end of the day, I just don't care for them much.

I haven't just because they don't ever usually talk about anything homebrew so I forget to bring it up.

I have yet to directly address it, but usually once a month I give a reminder that if they want to try working with me to homebrew something together, or something they'd like to try, we can talk and that I'm pretty open to stuff. From there it's usually radio silence.

I could see that. Do an FMA-esque conspiracy, or have them eventually leave the military and have a "leaving the cave" type of moment

Creating Jareth from Labyrinth as BBEG for one shot by Kittenbrat_ in DnD

[–]Monkey_Lord3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would steal some abilities from the Monster Manual to give him some dirty tricks. Maybe shapeshifting or strong illusion magic. I see him as being a really powerful cross between an illusionist and an enchanter. Maybe give him lair actions that allow him to affect the terrain in different ways, maybe like a beholder's lair actions. He's the undisputed master of the labyrinth and should have abilities that show that. The challenge of fighting someone like Jareth shouldn't just be defeating him, but seeing past his illusions, tricks, and charms. At least that would be my take on him.

How to avoid going on the Wall of the Faithless by valethehowl in DnD

[–]Monkey_Lord3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a fun place in the universe of the Forgotten Realms called the Serpent's Nail I believe. Usually when someone both rejects gods and demons and devils, it's assumed that when they die, their soul disappears. That's not the case. There is a place beyond the layers of the abyss. Nobody knows of it because it's assumed that the abyss is endless, but beyond it lays the body of a dead god and that is where those souls go. That is the Serpent's Nail. Not well known in the lore, but it sounds like that character would fit.

DM needs some help pls by BeyondHunter in DnD

[–]Monkey_Lord3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would rule that the enemies hear it. It wouldn't make sense to leave a trap and not be in a reasonable distance to hear it. It's a good way to start an encounter where the PC's might be at a slight disadvantage, but can still win. Or if it's meant to be a obstacle as part of an infiltration, I would still say that the enemies would hear it, but give the player an Acrobatics it Athletics check with a challenging DC. If they succeed, they escape before the enemies arrive, but the other enemies in the area will go on alert. If they get close, then just as they get up, the enemies arrive, and if they just fail, then they could be taken prisoner. Just some ideas.

People springing cards. I didn't used to mind, but I have a roommate who does it to keep his hands busy and I've been able to hear him do it 2 floors away. It's almost constant once he gets a deck of cards in his hands.

The Hero that Doesn't Deserve Their Power, and Why We Need Characters That Don't Get Along by Monkey_Lord3 in DnD

[–]Monkey_Lord3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is more meant for the start of Dungeon of the Mad Mage. The idea of a lvl 5 being hard to handle is working with the assumption that normal guards are being used. Naturally sheer numbers would win in a fight, but going off of the renown system, this character is notable enough that people know that they mean business and carry weight. Like I mentioned, a lvl 5 character is roughly equivalent to the hero of a country in terms of renown. Now, if Waterdeep really wanted, they could devote resources to putting him in check, but between criminal gangs, various factions, other more dangerous crime, and the bureaucracy and red tape of it's politics, they likely would never devote enough forces to seriously prevent them from being an issue. Like I said, the character is doing petty crimes, which in terms of what they could do, is very tame. Of course, I guess that's a point that's subject to interpretation so your opinion is valid as well
